Why is there a Spinning Wheel Most of the Time on my Home Screen After the 7.1 Update?

After the 7.1 update, I get a spinning wheel in my notification bar at the top next to the signal strength on my iPhone 5s.

I know that this means there is network connections going on when this happens, but why is it happening so much like this now?

Prior to the update, I only saw the spinning wheel up there when I was downloading an app.

So with it doing this so much, is it using my battery a lot?

What is it retrieving when doing this?

I have mail set to manual, the only notifications I get are for phone, messages, & calendar, and I have Background App Refresh & Location Services turned off.

Help will be appreciated.

I'm having the same issue as well, I did a reset but after awhile the spinning clock would appear again. Background refresh is off, location service is off, icloud backup is off, all apps were closed at that specific time. Please rectify this problem asap.

I am seeing this too — iOS 7.1 on 5s — but it does not seem to be draining the battery.

Like others, a hard reset clears it temporarily but the spinner does eventually return. I iterated through disabling everything (email, background refresh, location, etc) without change.

I assume this is some sort of bug with iOS 7.1 😕

I am on an iPhone 5 on 7.1.1. I noticed the issue prior to upgrading on 7.1 and assumed 7.1 would fix this issue. It does not fix this issue. Rebooting or resetting network settings is only a temporary fix. It will eventually come back, and it DOES suck battery life. My phone wasn't doing anything in my pocket at work today and it went from about 80% to 50% in a matter of 2-3 hours. That's a huge train. As far as I can tell it's not using a whole lot of data. Does anyone know of any internet connection monitoring apps are in the app store? I'd be interested in seeing what its connecting too to cause the network indicator to go off.

PK1138... what am I not understanding? a spinning wheel on top of the home screen on the left hand side to the right of the wifi or cell signal... only on the home screen... Have you even tried what I suggested? I garuntee you if it's happening to you... you have some available "APP" update which you havn't done... has nothing to do with the IOS software update
