Insufficient Content for Edit Question

Hi There,

I'm trying to import a clip shorter than the clip on my timeline and get the above prompt. I don't want to make the imported clip longer, or make the timeline clip shorter...what should I do to do a superimposed clip in the timeline when this happens, when I get the insufficient content for edit prompt? Help would be greatly appreciated!

I Mac G5, Power Mac G4, Mac OS X (10.3.9), own FC Studio

I'm not sure that I completely understand what you are trying to do here. Are you trying to replace a clip on the timeline? Are you trying to add a clip on top of another? You said "superimpose," what do you mean by this? Are you adding a lower third or an overlay graphic?

If you are just adding a clip on top of the other one then you need to add it to the track above or below (depending on whether you want it on top or underneath) the original clip. Then check the manual for information on video tracks and compositing clips.

If you are trying to do something else you need to give us more information on exactly what you are trying to do.

Well of course you will. If your clip is 3 seconds, and you mark IN and OUT in the timeline a 5 second section...it won't fit. Too short. So what you do is mark IN on your source clip and IN on the timeline and hit OVERWRITE. This will put the full clip onto the timeline.

If you want to SUPERIMPOSE it, then you need to mark IN and OUT on the timeline with a duration that is the length of the clip you are trying to bring in.

OK, sorry I wasn't clear and Shane sorry about the lack of understanding in FCP, but in Adobe Premiere, I used to bring in a clip and put it above another on the timeline and didn't have to make any in or out points to do so...that probably was the only thing that was better about Premiere.

Anyway: what I'm doing is I have title movies that I'm importing from Motion to FCP, and I have a clip of dogs playing on one track and want to superimpose the titles on the track directly above. That's what I'm trying to do and my title clip is shorter than the dogs playing clip which is why I get the insufficient message. I understand that. I just don't understand what to do to avoid getting it...the fastest and easiest thing to do.

I've put another message on the Motion forum about another issue which is that even tho' I've created an alpha channel with my text in Motion, it's coming into FCP with a black background. I want a transparent background. Sure could use help with this too since I've tried everything I can think of to no avail.

YOu can do that in FCP too, quite easily. Drag the clip from the browser and onto the timeline. Or from the Viewer onto the timeline. You don't have to drag it into the CANVAS window to get it onto the timeline.

For superimposing titles, all you do is Control-click on the timeline above the video track and select ADD TRACK (also available in your sequence menu) and then drag the title onto V2.

I do know what you are saying, and tried it myself. The first time I did it, I experienced what you did...it CUT it in. The next 12 times it didn't, it dropped it on the top.

Try it again and again, and if not, then open it in the viewer first then drag it.

You must not be doing something right. Not difficult when you are very unfamiliar with FCP.

<When I bring another clip to put on the track above an existing track it pushes the existing clip on that track over the length of the new clip>

Lucin,
Remember when you drag in a new clip and hold it momentarily over where you want to put it, you get either a down arrow or right arrow, depending exactly where you put the cursor on the track. So if you want to put a title on top of a track, bring the title clip to the track above and hold it momentarily there to make sure you get the 'down' arrow so it will put it on top, not the 'right' arrow so it will insert it.

Shane,

Listen: when I first saw this prompt, I figured that I needed to make the length the same for the incoming track, so I used the razor tool and cut the clip to be the same length as the clip on the track below it.....this is for superimposing one clip over another....sometimes this worked and sometimes it didn't. That's not as it should be, so I know I must be doing something wrong, but the question is what could it be? to have to put in and out points for every edit is tedious. I don't see why I can't just plop the clip on the track above without causing the lower track to move? ugh.

Sharon,

I haven't tried this and will momentarily and then I'll get back to you....I'm sure you've got the answer!! I really hope so. Thanks so much! But, what about the insufficient content for edit question? I mean, why can't I superimpose a shorter clip, like a title, over a longer segment on the track below?
