Macbook Pro 15" Mid (2010) clean install with Mavericks! Nothing but crashes...Very disappointed

Decided to upgrade to Mavericks since Snow Leopard is no longer supported and I wanted to stay current with technology. However I wanted my computer like new again so instead I erased my drive and did a complete clean install of Mavericks.. No problem... Lately I have had nothing "BUT" problems. I have gotten computer crashes while using finder & safari... My system is not reliable anymore it just completely restarts at random it is the most frustrating thing I've ever had to deal with (EVEN PC'S AREN'T THIS BAD). Mind you I "NEVER" had these issues with Snow Leopard it ran perfectly and I fell in love with Mac. I bought my macbook pro 15' "BRAND NEW" online from apple store paid $2400 and recently discovered that my macbook pro mid 2010 model is defective. Boy I really wish I would of known that before dropping $2400 on an unreliable laptop to just give me problems. I no longer have a warranty which is long overdue. And it really makes me dislike the company as a whole. I have repaired my harddrive more than once and have repaired errors and it still crashes. Before on Snow Leopard my superdrive stopped reading all cd's/dvd's. I thought maybe if I upgraded to Mavericks it would of fixed the issue...NO. Sometimes when I hook up my built in display I get random black screens and I have to just shut down my mac..This is happening by just streaming "NETFLIX" from my flatscreen..mind you it does not "ALWAYS" happen. I'm just looking for answers and I seriously want to downgrade back to Snow Leopard cause Mavericks is too buggy! Any help would be very much appreciated. I find it difficult to even still support apple...I even have a darn iphone. Please someone help me 😟 I am desperate. I use my macbook for dj'ing and have had crashes in the middle of my gigs due to mavericks crashing my system. It's quite depressing, sad and pathetic. Thank you for any help.

When you did your "clean install", exactly what did you do? After you erased your HD, how did you do the reinstall? Did you do it from a backup? Did you reinstall apps from backups?

Macs that misbehave with Mavericks usually do so because they have old/bad/incompatible software on them.

It would help to give us more information. Etresoft: EtreCheck is a free app developed by one of the contributors to this forum which will generate a system report on your computer. If you can paste the report here we can take a look and see what might be the problem.

You have the MacBookPro6,2, the Edsel of Macs. It may have a logic-board defect covered by this recall.

Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider, to have the machine tested. The routine hardware diagnostics used by service providers do not detect the fault. There is a specific test for this issue that Apple calls "VST" (for "Video Switching Test.") Ask for it. A "Failed" result means that the fault is present. However, according to reports, some units may pass the test, and yet still be deemed eligible for repair under the program. Your experience may vary.

Print the first page of the panic report, if any, and the support page linked above, and bring them with you.

Note that the recall only applies within three years of purchase. After that, Apple may refuse the service. In that case, you may be quoted a price of about $300 (in the U.S.) for a "depot repair," which involves shipping the unit to a central repair facility and takes about two weeks. For that flat fee, anything found wrong with it should be fixed, not just the logic board.

The model was discontinued on February 24, 2011, so the recall has nominally ended. Some units may have been sold after that date by Apple as refurbished, or by resellers as new, and they should still be covered.

Some owners report that their unit was repaired under the program after the deadline had passed. Others report that the repair was covered by the extended warranty from a credit-card issuer. Again, your experience may vary.

Sometimes the replacement part is also defective, so be prepared for that possibility.

If it's too late for your unit to be repaired under the program, and you don't want to pay for a new logic board, you may be able to stop the panics by disabling automatic graphics switching.

If you're dissatisfied with Apple's response, please keep in mind that no one here represents the company or can help with customer-service issues.

Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.

*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

Before I go into detail. I wanna mention I just got back from my gig and had no problems with the laptop whatsoever lucky I had no crashes. Just got home and as I loaded safari to reply to this post I had two crashes...all from simply just "loading" the website. Computer auto restarted and when boot up says "Computer restarted because of a problem" Mavericks is just completely unreliable. This type of stuff has "NEVER" happened on Snow Leopard. I am aware my Macbook is faulty since it's the Mid 2010 model but I find the crashes hard to believe that it's "my computer" because ever since I upgraded to Mavericks I've had crash issues. I understand with new software there are bugs..but this is far from that! It is like a horrible nightmare. The fact that my computer is a recalled product really agitates me considering I paid $2400 on a machine that should be "FLAWLESS".

Now.. When I was on Snow Leopard I didn't use Time Machine to backup my files I did not even have a backup with time machine..."I only needed what I wanted which were just music & video files" so I used an external drive to store them. Upon installing Mavericks It would even fail to complete the setup..Almost as if the software wasn't loading any data. For hrs I left my computer alone and Mavericks never went through the complete install..it would always get "stuck" at some point which already points as a flaw in the software from the get go. However I was able to finally install it when I booted mavericks from a usb stick. Everything went wonderfully. And then started seeing crashes...over & over & over till no end. This is why I need to go back to Snow Leopard. I think my model laptop just isn't compatible with Mavericks. I will copy n paste my report for further investigating. Appreciate all that replied. It is comforting.

What I really need to know is should I downgrade back to snow leopard? or reinstall mavericks? I have an ext drive to backup whatever i truly want to keep. What happens if I re-install mavericks and nothing changes... I find it hard to believe that mavericks is the issue..I have checked for errors and scanned for repairs and all goes fine or usually tells me the drive is "OK".

Mar 13, 2014 4:49 AM in response to shodgkins83

Read Linc's post about your 6,2's Edselness.

You also have CleanMyMac, which is extremely bad software, and is probably responsible for your Mac's problems. It is difficult to describe just how bad CleanMyMac is without resorting to language which will be redacted by the Apple censor, so I won't. But you should try to get rid of it. See: How To Uninstall CleanMyMac 2? Complete Removal of Mac Apps. But CleanMyMac may have damaged your Mac beyond repair, so you may need to erase your HD and do a clean reinstall. Anything that purports to "optimize", "clean", "accelerate", "monitor", or "protect" your Mac is in this same unmentionable category. These apps are unnecessary, poorly written, overpriced (if they were free, they'd still be overpriced), and harmful. The people that sell this stuff know this, but they keep selling it because people keep buying it.

Thank you for the reply. I'm in desperate need of help esp now. I did a clean install of mavericks. Loaded safari to test and before the website could even load I got an immediate crash and restart of my computer. What I think is going on is my models defect is not compatible with mavericks "At All" that is a clear indication that there is a fault I'm mavericks. Even after doing a complete clean install I'm still getting crashes..this is impossible. I have through countless hrs of disk checks and repairs and everything is stating "nothing seems to be wrong" mavericks is just buggy with my mid 2010 model. Apple has completely failed me. I want to revert back to snow leopard but having trouble. My SuperDrive dies not even load any CDs./DVDs. I even bought a cd lens cleaner and it just spit the cd right out. I have a copy of snow leopard on a usb stick but have no idea how to boot from it on mavericks. If I do so and snow leopard still acts the same I'll just take it to an apple store. I have never ever had these shutdowns with snow leopard. This is so frustrating. Please someone with experience help me get snow leopard back to atleast test it.

If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out these instructions.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.

Select the most recent panic report (with a name that begins with "Kernel" and ends in ".panic") under the heading System Diagnostic Reports on the left. If you don't see that heading, select

View ▹ Show Log List

from the menu bar. Post the entire contents of the report — the text, please, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header and body of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don't post any other kind of diagnostic report, such as a hang report.

It's very odd I have not had a crash yet after the last 2. Last pre-upgrade backup? I just want to go back to snow leopard is this not possible without the disc? My cd drive doesn't function so that's useless. I do have usb stick can I not boot from that? It is no wonder why Mavericks is a free upgrade it doesn't even function with older model computers...Compatibility issue?

Nevermind it just crashed when i was browsing safari's top websites...i just started clicking one by one and then it crashed on the 3rd or 4th website...auto restarted. Ridiculous! Mavericks is not working out for me. Desperately need snow leopard. Why it was discontinued is beyong me. If it's not broke don't fix it is my motto. With new software there is always compatibility issues and Mavericks seems to be one of them with my model laptop.

Macbook Pro 15" Mid (2010) clean install with Mavericks! Nothing but crashes...Very disappointed
