iPad 2 VPN access with iOS 7.1

I updated one of my iPads to iOS 7.1. The upgrade went smoothly but now when I connect to a VPN service (strongvpn) the performance is terrible and I can no longer stream videos through the VPN. My other iPad which I have not updated yet continues to work fine with the VPN as does my iPhone 4s which has also been updated to 7.1. I have used the ookla speed test and get about a 40Mb/s download speed when not connected to the VPN this drops to under 1Mb/s when I run the test after I connect to the VPN . The other iPad and iPhone get about 12Mb/s download speed via the VPN.

I have tried turning off other features like cellular data, Bluetooth etc but nothing changes. I even went so far as to completely reset the iPad and start from scratch but whatever I try I cannot get any improvement in the download speed when connected through the VPN so streaming video is impossible.

I have been in contact with Strongvpn but they have no idea what is going on. All my other devices continue to perform well - just this iPad since it was updated.

Has anyone else who uses Strongvprn successfully updated their iPad 2 without issue?

Thanks in advance for any tips or feedback

I am using Uk1 and uk4. I didn't change anything on my ipad or router so don't know why it is fixed but is for me. I had contacted PureVpn for assistance a few days ago after I upgraded to 7.1 and they had me try all uk servers but none worked but all working now. Hope it starts working for you.

Been thinking about this more since reading other forum. I did take my ipad to work yesterday and connected to wifi there..but not PureVPN. It was when I came back home that it started working. Don't know if disconnecting from my wifi and then reconnecting could have been what fixed it... But would be worth trying if still slow for you ...

Argh..The plot thickens. After 5days of terrible speeds and then 2days of good speeds, this morning I have now dropped down to .6 again on all PureVpn UK servers -compared to 12 off the VPN. Tried forgetting my wifi and reconnecting but no better. I have a second Ipad not upgraded to 7.1 and on it I am getting 5+ on the VPN. This definitely has something to do with the upgrade. I am going to look at router later today to see if I can gain any information on what is going on from it. I am glad speedtest saves history as I would think I had gone crazy but can see that 12 hrs ago with the same external IP I pinged the same London server as this morning yet my results are drastically different.

Been a while since I posted, I was one of the early ones. One of the most interesting propositions in this thread is the suggestion regarding router WMM setting - Wi-Fi Multimedia (QoS). This however is not the root cause. Keep in mind an iPhone 5S iOS 7.1 does not have the same symproms of an iPad (#rd gen) iOS7.1. So, therefore as expected and logical a router WMM setting does not affect either device, on or off the iPhone performs normally, the iPad is crawling. The problem root cause is still likely iOS 7.1 core, even though different in iPhone and iPad (3rd gen) - I don't think there is an issue with iPad Air. There also remains the possibility that the issue lies with the 3rd party App providers, i.e. BBC iPlayer, Netflix, etc. It also could be a combination of iOS 7.1 and third party App providers.

It is still interesting to note, that there are some speed test tools which do not show the slower speed on the iPad (3rd gen), however the streaming performance of third party Apps and the main/most common speed test tool still show a massive reduction in speed.

Apple, note well - we are still waiting for a resolution.

More like 90% for me and that's on every server my VPN offers; all are reading 4mb's or less down all the way

down to to 2mb's DL with UL practically unreadable! That's from an untapped speed that averages 28-30mb's DL

& 4mb UL!

I usually go through a server in Canada which is not only out of country but much further than my closest one and

generally never lose more than 10mb's on the DL.

I've run the gamut from reboots, resets, and multiple VPN dumps, replacements and different servers all to no avail.

Oh well, since this is one of the few places talking about it I thought to put in my 2 cents.

Sidebar: they still didn't fix the wallpaper issues in any regard and now 7.1 has even managed to mess

up 2 of my apps that were aiding me to say nothing about destroying Pimp Your Screen!

Yeah, yeah, still love my pad but they've had to up my BP med's on account of all this! Ta!

Wish I could have had three days at full speed!

To loose it after having a fix indeed must have been a

hard nut to crack!

So many pads out there and so few speaking about this problem.

Seems like every other day I run another search trying to find a fix but

there's zip all out there and Apple's not talking.

Off topic but..still?

The wallpaper issue. It not only wasn't fixed with the parallax view setting on 7.1

but it has now managed to render apps such as wallax almost totlly useless with

everything zooming and I can't even use my fave, pimp my screen for general papers

any more. Prior to iOS 7 I literally could choose any photo out of my album daily then

change my paper and be off and running within 2 clicks!

Heck I had the same lock screen for over 2 years that I loved, went to clarify it

and still don't have it back right! Far as sound issues, don't even!

I understand that any new OS can be problematic with a myriad of issues and

holes to fill in and that apps can't instantly adapt when upgrades are released but

still I would hope that those are just rare glitchs.

I don't consider VPN, wallpaper, or sound issues out there in rare freak land, those are

primary daily needed functions; well save for wallpaper...but 12hrs a day on my pad

I'm seeing that WP an awfull lot!

Good to see someone at least talking about it!

Thanks for trying, you abviously hit a nerve with the title. From their response it is pretty obvious that Apple do not care about the performance of their products or the loyalty of their customers.

I find it astonishing that a company that was founded on innovation has lost it's way so badly that they try to hide their issues.

Come on Apple, are you going to continue on this path of ignoring your customers.

I too am having the exact same problems. I have been monitoring this thread for some kind of acknowledgement from Apple with an expected resolution date but two weeks on and still nothing!

This is no way to treat your customers - Apple If you are interested in selling your next products to your existing customers will you please at least acknowledge there is an issue and let us know when we can expect an update. Is that too much to ask???

No! Am getting very annoyed with this problem. Just updated (OTA) 7.1.1, and no change.

Ran 'Ookla' speed test: w/o VPN- 37.50mps download (that's a new record high for me, btw.)

wi/ VPN- 00.61mps(!) download (what it's been since this started.)

Use 'Strong' as a server here, no issues w/speed on my mid 2010 Mac Mini.

Guess I should at least try setting up my VPN on my iPhone 5, though unclear if it's a iOS cross platflorm issue. Hate the the small screen anyway.
