iPad 2 VPN access with iOS 7.1

I updated one of my iPads to iOS 7.1. The upgrade went smoothly but now when I connect to a VPN service (strongvpn) the performance is terrible and I can no longer stream videos through the VPN. My other iPad which I have not updated yet continues to work fine with the VPN as does my iPhone 4s which has also been updated to 7.1. I have used the ookla speed test and get about a 40Mb/s download speed when not connected to the VPN this drops to under 1Mb/s when I run the test after I connect to the VPN . The other iPad and iPhone get about 12Mb/s download speed via the VPN.

I have tried turning off other features like cellular data, Bluetooth etc but nothing changes. I even went so far as to completely reset the iPad and start from scratch but whatever I try I cannot get any improvement in the download speed when connected through the VPN so streaming video is impossible.

I have been in contact with Strongvpn but they have no idea what is going on. All my other devices continue to perform well - just this iPad since it was updated.

Has anyone else who uses Strongvprn successfully updated their iPad 2 without issue?

Thanks in advance for any tips or feedback

Well, still no update from Apple:(( Very disappointed that this issue has not been addressed yet. I've trolled the net but can't seem to find any other topics on this issue apart from this one. There must be thousands of people having issues with this bug.

Even sent a tweet to their CEO,https://twitter.com/eddie_oneill/status/446289756029452288

No response. I guess that indicates Apple's commitment to their customers. At the very least they should give their customers an indication of when a fix will be available.

I have worked in the Comms and IT industry for over 30 years and one thing I do know is how much customers appreciate feedback, even if it's not that positive. At least keep the communication channels open, let us know what is happening.

A very frustrated Apple customer for now, maybe not much longer at this rate:(((

Apple for some reason 7.1 halves the amount of UL and DL speeds from that of the PC - THUS REDERING THE IPAD USELESS!!

Come one throw a dog a bone!

Hello All!

I'm the first to admit if I have done something wrong - in that case I have - My issue has been resolved, the fix for me was to update my VPN settings from my provider on the iPad 2 [in this case tunnel bear] - Once installed my UL and DL speeds were actually better than before - Egg on the chin.

Hope every one else can maybe try the same type of fix and utopia will be restored in your lives soon!

Kind Regards,

The Borg.

I found a solution to this problem that seems to have worked for my slow VPN issues on another Apple thread. https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5995041?answerId=25176338022#25176338022

I needed to go to my Wifi router and disable WMM mode.

"The WMM setting is a wireless setting and is normally enabled by default on the router. You will have to login to your router via 192.168.0.1 (or whichever is your default login address) and locate the wireless settings and look for something called WMM setting or WMM mode and disable it. Each router is different so you will have do the research on your router. "

I'm using an iPad 3 16gb wifi and StrongVPN (great vpn service by the way)

With WMM mode enabled using the VPN I was getting speeds of .3 Mbps download and .2 Mbps upload.

With WMM mode disabled using the VPN I am now getting up to 5 Mbps download and 1.5 Mbps upload.

Not using the VPN, I get 26Mbps download and 10Mbps upload using an N-router ( http://www.hitrontech.com/en/cable_detail.php?id=10 )and my cable service provides 100Mbps down and 10Mbps up, just for reference...

I am using Uk1 and uk4. I didn't change anything on my ipad or router so don't know why it is fixed but is for me. I had contacted PureVpn for assistance a few days ago after I upgraded to 7.1 and they had me try all uk servers but none worked but all working now. Hope it starts working for you.

Been thinking about this more since reading other forum. I did take my ipad to work yesterday and connected to wifi there..but not PureVPN. It was when I came back home that it started working. Don't know if disconnecting from my wifi and then reconnecting could have been what fixed it... But would be worth trying if still slow for you ...

Argh..The plot thickens. After 5days of terrible speeds and then 2days of good speeds, this morning I have now dropped down to .6 again on all PureVpn UK servers -compared to 12 off the VPN. Tried forgetting my wifi and reconnecting but no better. I have a second Ipad not upgraded to 7.1 and on it I am getting 5+ on the VPN. This definitely has something to do with the upgrade. I am going to look at router later today to see if I can gain any information on what is going on from it. I am glad speedtest saves history as I would think I had gone crazy but can see that 12 hrs ago with the same external IP I pinged the same London server as this morning yet my results are drastically different.
