iPad 2 VPN access with iOS 7.1

I updated one of my iPads to iOS 7.1. The upgrade went smoothly but now when I connect to a VPN service (strongvpn) the performance is terrible and I can no longer stream videos through the VPN. My other iPad which I have not updated yet continues to work fine with the VPN as does my iPhone 4s which has also been updated to 7.1. I have used the ookla speed test and get about a 40Mb/s download speed when not connected to the VPN this drops to under 1Mb/s when I run the test after I connect to the VPN . The other iPad and iPhone get about 12Mb/s download speed via the VPN.



I have tried turning off other features like cellular data, Bluetooth etc but nothing changes. I even went so far as to completely reset the iPad and start from scratch but whatever I try I cannot get any improvement in the download speed when connected through the VPN so streaming video is impossible.


I have been in contact with Strongvpn but they have no idea what is going on. All my other devices continue to perform well - just this iPad since it was updated.



Has anyone else who uses Strongvprn successfully updated their iPad 2 without issue?

Yes, just read that a brand new air is affected also.


For the first time since having my iPad 2 I'm thinking

of jumping ship and it distresses me greatly as I've

loved it right up to iOS6 when the first problems began

to surface

Biggest pet peeve, wallpapers; total joke and never fixed.

Actually had 2 apps that were addressing it but now 7.1 &

7.1.1 have messed them up too.

I used to just grab a pic from my album an place it every

other day just for change but now placing any pic from my

album is a major resize, reconfigure, and ***...hope for

the best but get the worst. I've been looking at the same

wallpaper for a month now.


VPN issues beyond ridiculous, 30mb/DL reduced to 1.2 to 3.4

if I'm lucky and videos, might as well drop the door if you want

to view one.

Had my heart set on a new Air64 or maybe the new 12" Pro

if it's ever released but now...having my VPN practically null

and void for all purposes without a fix maybe it's time for a switch

to the other camp much as it pains me.


Apple, you've dropped the ball here. There are thousands

of us, maybe even more using VPN's that you've rendered

impotent and barely capable of a rise. Admit the mistake,

put the resorces into fixing this and avoid a mass exodus

cause that's what you're facing with this latest fiasco.


We have a right to protect ourselves. You've not only taken

my fave wallpapers but now my pads bodyguard too!

After speaking with my VPN provider - I did a bit more testing - specifically with the Ookla Speedtest.


On my iPhone 5S . .


Connected to a VPN in the UK, from the Bay Area, and having the Speedtest auto select the server, I get a very slow 0.5 - 1Mbps connection. However, I guess due to Location services, it picks up a server here in the Bay Area. After ( alot of - Ookla needs a server search function 🙂 ) scrolling and picking a server in London I get a much more respectable 6Mbps ( closer to what my Mac is getting ).


However, on my iPad 3, connected to the exact same London sever I still only get 0.5-1Mbps.


I think all of my pertinent settings on both devices are the same but I am not bothering to find the right buttons to press as I need to go outside 🙂. Hope this can maybe help any clever people who know their way around iOS better than me.

I made the original post for this issue back in early March. Here we are 3 months later and still no resolution. Frustrating is not the word.


Luckily I have a second iPad that I did not upgrade to iOS 7.1 so I am still able to use my VPN.


I wish Apple would focus more on addressing issues like this instead investing on some of the frivilous upgrades they are touting for iOS 8.


If customers cannot get basic connectivity and performance - these other updates mean nothing.

Why no official response from Apple on such a major issue for so many users. ? This is why we are all frustrated with Apple !!!!!!!


Should the question be asked on other relevant media forums that are not blocked by Apple moderators ?


Has anone tried IOS8 to see if this MAJOR PROBLEM is sorted ?


All this is well intentioned to WORK TOWARDS A SOLUTION.

I switched from my long time VPN provider to WiTopia on a whim with a free trial

using their PPTP/IPSec settings and a Canadian server from PA. with barely a drop

in speed plus my mail generally goes in and out while on it without a hitch.

Always had to shut my VPN down before when em'ing out.

Usually I have no problems streaming and even if I do I just turn it off, then

right back on and the video flows just fine.


Admittedly there are unexpected shutdowns but no more than on my old VPN

and usually not while on a site. Still, compared to no VPN or one slowed down

to nil I'll take a couple of hiccups any day of the week!


Normal DL 30mbs, UL 3.5mbs: under VPN no less than 28mbs & 3mbs.


Worth checking out and the price is half my old provider.


Problem solved but use their directions and the perimeters specified as

what I was using before on the old service was a dead door.


When setting up use PPTP/IPSec and you'll be slamming once again!

Their people will walk you through set up too if you have a problem.

I'd say they're more than aware by now as they are

of the still persisting wallpaper problem that was never

properly addressed; motion reduction or not!

One of the fave things to do with my pad was drop a new pic

daily on my home page as the mood struck. This now involves

major modification of the photo and multiples re-fits to get it

on page. Sadly, I've had the same wallpaper now for 2 months

primarily because of said extra effort.

In fact 2 great apps have basically been rendered useless by this glitch:

Pimp Your Screen and even Wallax which actually was designed to remedy

the problem but fumbled under the useless hand of iOS 7+++?


I don't see iOS8 as the new Mecca for iPads or iPhones as the new Air is

suffering under these glitches also, even with its advanced chip and

uber-retina screen. I had looked forward to buying a new Air or even

the 12"Pro if it ever comes out but these foibles and Apple's reluctance

to admit them publicly leaves me leery to say the least.


At one point I even thought of switching platforms after seeing what an

Android based pad could do but I'm so used to this almost 3 yr. old iPad 2

that I'm gonna stick with her till the end cause like Chuckie says;

"Friends till the end!". Let's hope Apple believes the same and steps up

to the plate before it becomes to late. IMO of course, no offense meant.

Thanks - I was just about to update. Whew, glad I found this thread. First Facetime, now VPN.


Is it possible Apple is doing this on purpose as a forebearer to some big TV rights supplier contract? Seems odd that something so used and functional would just get "broken" this easily by mistake.


Does anyone use Surfeasy or Tunnelbear as their VPN apps?


Are the problems only with 'free' VPN servers, or 'paid' services as well?

Thought I'd weigh in. I use StrongVPN. They are excellent (or were before this ios software update). They are aware of the problem and actually they were the ones who worked out what exactly was wrong with my vpn performance. So kudos to them. My workaround is unfortunately to switch to another non Apple tablet and connect to the TV with HDMI cable rather than Apple TV. Feel so disappointed in Apple. If all of you have reported this to Apple support and they still haven't created a fix or allowed us to download the previous version, then it confirms what I keep hearing: that they are not interested in looking after the individual customer, only the majority.


By the way, somebody on this thread said they'd had success using witopia. so I tried that but it made absolutely no difference. They also said they had not heard of anyone having a problem with an apple device before so I gave them the link to this thread. Not sure how it's possible that their support are claiming ignorance about this issue which has been around for months, seeing as so many people use ios so I was very unimpressed with them. I am definitely sticking with strongvpn.

(And with my other tablet unfortunately. )

I use both SurfEasy and Tunnelbear. You can set up temporary, FREE accounts with each I believe, as that's how I auditioned them.


Maybe if you folks would give that a try it would substantiate what they told me, aka they haven't had complaints worth noting.

I also sent them the link to this thread, so with any hopes, they actually read it.

I was just about to update to iOS 7 (from iOS 6) when I found this thread, so obviously, I haven't.


Is it possible Apple has done this on purpose for some reason - aka they are planning relationships with content providers for an Apple TV concept, and by making VPN difficult, would make said "rights holders" more comfortable doing business with Apple?

Just a thought - as it makes no sense why they would otherwise make such an apparent, glaring error. Remember, Apple was always the company who stressed audio/video superiority.

This issue has been driving me crazy but I think I have found a solution - at least its working for me. I have an iPad 3 running iOS 7.1.2.VPNStrong was very slow ca. 10% of standard internet (0.5 Mbps from 5). I tried different WiFi connection options and found that if I selected Static IP instead of DHCP, then the speed was improved to ca. 50% of non-VPN (2.5 Mbps),


What I did specifically was:

- go to Settings/Wi-fi.

- click on the blue i in the circle to the right of the active Wi- fi connection

- make a note of the data entries for the DHCP tab

- select the Static tab and manually enter the same data noted from the DHCP tab


This has been working for me the past few hours and I have disconnected/reconnected many times and if still works. Good luck

Is it just me, or does it seem odd, that if all of us have been sending technical complaint forms to Apple about this....why is it still going on?

It's been over three months since 7.1 came out, and honestly, having your internet speeds cut by 75% just doesn't seem very good, does it?

If GM, Ford, BMW brought your car in for a recall notice, which then caused the speedo to max out at 27MPH, would it really take them THREE MONTHS to fix the problem?

I certainly sent a complaint.

Is everyone else? Complaining here does absolutely nothing.

What the !@#$ is Apple doing?
