iOS 7.1 Exchange PDF viewing

We have a fleet of iPads and iPhones that are having issues with iOS 7.1 and PDF attachments.

If we send the PDF that is having issues to an email on our exchange server then the PDF file will open as a blank white or black screen. If then sent to any other app it will not open (We use PDF Expert)

If we change any of the following it works and open just fine.

  • Use a gmail address and the same mail app.
  • Use the same PDF but opened and saved in a different PDf compatibility setting.
  • Open the same PDF from webmail.
  • Use a device running iOS 7.0 and open the PDF

I've reproduced the issue with 3 iOS 7.1 devices.

So this IS still an issue on Exchange 2007 SP3 RU13, but it effects few messages than before (i.e. messages from our copier now open without a problem). What is new now that I've updated is we do have the option to "Download Full Message" which we did not have before. So at least we have a workaround that we didn't have before. Thankfully we are a small enough organization that this is a manageable workaround for us.

We are still having this issue which started immediately with the release of ios 7.1.

Apple asked us to wait for 7.2, then 8, yet nothing has fixed this. "Download all attachments" button does not always show up, and does not always fix the corruption issue.

This is a game changer for us in regards to business email. We are currently looking at replacing all of our ios devices with windows / android phones and tablets.

If you call Apple they acknowledge it's an issue but have no resolution.

SO If I've followed this post correctly, most of us agree that this is a problem related to active sync. Our org uses corporate Gmail and if you set it up with atcivesync it corrupts attachments, if you use IMAP it doesn't. This has been true from IOS 7 through to IOS 8.1.1

Correct. The regression was introduced in iOS 7 and hasn't been properly addressed since. The regression is caused by improper handling of line endings when the mail app downloads a message with attachments from an ActiveSync by, what I presume to be, the bandwidth-saving or space version of the message, or whatever it is that they're doing that makes it different from the one fetched when you press the "download full message" button.

Also, updated Exchange on this end, still having issues.

Apple introduced several bugs to the way it handles ActiveSync in iOS 7, which carried on into iOS 8. There's a list of "know issues" that Microsoft has compiled into this KB article here: https://support.microsoft.com/kb/2563324. Apple has known about issues in their handling of ActiveSync connections for a while, and haven't acted on it. The best way to get action on this item is to open a support case with Apple. The support case will be closed as a known issue with no good workarounds besides hitting the "download full message" button before opening attachments, but the more tickets a known issue receives, the more likely Apple will put forth an effort to fix the issue. This is because fixing the issue costs development time, ignoring the issue costs support time and face. If the support time and cost to face start to outweigh the development time, then they'll fix it.

Hi,

I think we can skip the iOS 7.1 part, we face the exact same issue currently with versions ranging from iOS 7.1 to the latest 8.1.3. We also run exchange 2007 as mail server. We also tried third party apps as mail clients, which frankly did work perfect. It seems that the iOS (native) mail application contains a bug which is causing issues.

Hello,

I also have the same issue. With the apple mail app and PDF attachments. Currently using Exchange 2007 to send email using SMTP 22.

I am able to receive the email and shows that their is an attachment attached but i am unable to open it. Works fine if I download Gmail or yahoo mail app.

We tried testing with iOS7 and iOS8 devices, all have the same issue.

What i found so far is that if I open the email with the attachment on the Gmail app then forward it to open it on the iOS Mail (native) app then it works.

Bug....???? I think so.
