CarPlay on 2014 Honda Civic EX?

I have a 2014 Honda Civic EX, which is listed as one of the carplay enabled vehicles... However I can not figure out how to get the carplay features to show up on my in-dash screen. I installed the apple update and I'm using the HDMI/USB splitter cable made by apple and sold to me directly from Honda for $100.

I also checked my phone settings to make sure carplay wasn't restricted.

Help please! HondaLink blows!

Here is my response from Honda Canada:

Thank you for contacting Honda Canada.

We appreciate your interest towards the CarPlay application. We wish to inform you we do not currently have any details in regards of this application for Honda vehicles manufactured for the Canadian market. Please note, when the information is available, it will be posted on our website. We suggest for you to visit www.honda.ca regularly to see what new vehicles and features are available.

Once again, we thank you for contacting Honda Canada.

Sincerely,

HONDA CANADA INC.

Jean-

Can you tell us if the iPhone can take a charge when connected via the HDMI/lightning cable? I saw one review of the Honda Link navigation app that stated the phone does not receive a charge when connected in this way.

I'm in the market for an Accord and really hoping to see this implemented in the 2015 model.

I just can't tell what Honda is doing right now:

1. Rolling their own version of Honda Link over HDMI that will require us to use Honda Link apps on the iPhone for things like navigation

2. Using the current Honda Link as a bridge to full Carplay implementation via HDMI

3. Planning to drop the HDMI bit and move to a USB/Lightning connector and full Carplay integration in next model year

My 5S with 7.1 does charge while plugged in. They will be making an announcement soon about CarPlay integration. I just purchased a 2014 Honda Civic EX which I am 95% certain will receive CarPlay, however if I was you I would wait for the announcement before I buy, which should happen before the 2015 Accord comes out.

Thanks Anthony,

Good to hear on the charging bit.

Just test drove the Accord yesterday and really liked it. Plus dealer gave me great offer on my current '02 Civic and awesome price on the '14 model. It was hard to say no but, as I keep my cars 8+ years and am a techie, it would be silly not to wait and see.

Hoping 'soon' will be days/weeks rather than at WWDC...

hi eoren11

I confirm that using the HDMI cable allows you to charge your iPhone but if you look closely at the HDMI adapter you will see that it requires a lightning cable anyway so that's where you're charging he's coming from.

From what I've read I don't think the HDMI will be used for Carplay but only the USB lightning cable.

in other words I have bought my HDMI cable for nothing since I use it only for the Honda link programs on the iPhone and for watching movies on the display when the car is stopped, otherwise I'm not using it At all. I'm using only the USB lightning cable for the iPod mode.

Hi Karen,

Not sure if you saw this, https://twitter.com/bcatz00/status/456532593702227968/photo/1 . I am hoping that is not for real as I have the 2014 Honda Civic EX-L and was looking forward to using CarPlay as shown in the promo photos on Apples site on the 2014 Civic. I have been trying to get more info to no avail.

Fingers crossed this pic is a bad April Fools joke!

CarPlay will launch sometime later this fall in cars made by Hyundai, Ferrari, Mercedes-Benz, Volvo, and Honda. Audi has already revealed plans to add CarPlay in some of its cars planned for release in 2015. In addition, Pioneer and Alpine are supposed to offer a way for anyone to add CarPlay to their current vehicle, but again specifics have not yet been announced.

What makes you think it is Apple? The auto manufacturers, such as Honda, need to speed up their software development to update the software in the new DisplayAudio head unit so it can support CarPlay. CarPlay was introduced with iOS 7.1, now the auto manufacturers need to update their software.
