Screen goes black when in iMessage/Text when covering camera

Anyone experience this same problem. Since taking the latest iOS update, when I am in an iMessage or Text message, with the whole convo showing on the screen. If my finger covers or blocks the camera on the screen (not the back camera with flash), my screen goes black. As soon as I remove my finger it stays black. If I keep it there for 10 seconds it stays black. I cannot seem to find this problem anywhere else.

iPhone 5s, iOS 7.1

Same issue with 7.1.1. In landscape, when I type, a finger naturally rests near the camera. As my thumb approaches the keyboard it blanks before it is touched. Solved by Setting - General - Reset all settings as RRAJJ said.

Goto settings brightness and turn off raise to wake

I have no access to raise to wake option anymore.
