Pop up for Free Upgrade to Mavericks

Hi. This is my first post so excuse me if I'm breaking any rules or ettiquette. I was working when I got an unprompted pop up from an application I've never seen before called Noticeboard that says "Upgrade to Mavericks Upgrade your Mac to the latest version of OS X for free." with the options "Now Now" and "Details". Since it happened rather suddenly and I don't recognize the application I just wanted to be sure that this isn't some kind of scam. I haven't touched the window other than to move it out of the way so I could type up this message. Thanks in advance for any help!

you can feel free to search for "Mavericks" in the app store and dismiss that box. It is a free OS X upgrade.

That would be a waste of time since there were no changes made to the AppStore.app itself. It remains v1.0.2 after the update. If you check the contents of the Mac App Store Update 1.0 above you'll see that the app itself isn't updated or modified in any way.

No. It's not the App Store app that is doing this. It is an app called Noticeboard that Apple recently stuck on your computer.

It is indeed not very Apple-like. It is actually extremely annoying.

If you are comfortable with using the Apple Terminal program, here is a way to eliminate that pop-up:

1. Open the Terminal application

2. Type in (the following is all one line but may appear folded when you read this):

sudo rm -rf /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/CommerceKit.framework/Versions/A/Resources/No ticeboard.app

You will be asked for you administrator password because Noticeboard.app is "owned" by "root"

Get used to it as it's been built into the AppStore app itself for Mountain Lion and Mavericks all along.

The method you suggest isn't really the best approach as it leaves the LaunchAgent to run every six hours. Unloading and deleting /System/Library/LaunchAgents/com.apple.noticeboard.plist would seem to be a better solution.

That's great information!

I tried to use launchctl to unload as suggested, but that didn't do anything. I just removed the file and rebooted my computer. Six hours later (when Noticeboard should have run again), it didn't. Thank you!

So for everyone else, the commands is simple:

sudo rm /System/Library/LaunchAgents/com.apple.noticeboard.plist

And then reboot.
