Create AAC version grayed out iTunes 11

Hi!

I am running in Mavericks, iTunes 11. I have a song that I would like to convert to ringtone for my iPhone 5S.

I have followed the preliminary steps:

And I have made sure I have the proper Import settings:

However, when I go to File > Create New Version, the Create AAC Version option is grayed out:

I have tried both songs purchased through iTunes and songs I previously had, non-protected. The song is correctly highlighted. Has any of you faced this same issue? How did you resolve it?

Thanks in advance!

Please point out where you were rude?

Here: "way to repost info from over 1 year ago..."

I had this problem TODAY, and so, I'm sure, have many other people.

But you didn't listen to the original poster saying that the AAC/MP3 option WAS GREYED OUT and went on and on about preferences and what to right-click on, and rambling on about how there was no problem. Ignoring the fact the the poster kept telling you step 4 WAS NOT AVAILABLE as an option. The settings were all correct, but the option wasn't available from the right-click or File menu. Why?

So here is the answer, which I found on my own, but which I could have found here if not for your rude replies turning me off before I got to StuBlack's reply. He was trying to do step 4 on a song that was IN iCLOUD. Since there was no local copy of the file, step 4 wasn't available. Simply clicking on the little cloud icon next to the song to download it locally is all I (and he) needed to do to suddenly make those options available.

The last two lines of your reply are rudeness personified. And yes, it is an issue if your goal is to help people. Because you were both dismissing what he (and I) said, missing the actual solution because of that, and because your attitude drives away those who might otherwise skim through the thread and actually find the solution.

The proper response would have been some version of "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to be rude. I'll be more careful next time."

Had I been rude, I would have apologized.

The poster simply reposted the same thing from a year earlier was rude.

No response necessary (unless you simply like trolling then it's still not needed but you'll do it anyway)...

Hey there! If you are still looking for a possible solution to "Convert AAC Verison" being greyed out: try holding down the OPTION key when in the menu pull down showing that option.

Sometimes I want to extract the audio clip from a video file. When the video file is selected typically that option in the pulldown is greyed out. If you hold down the OPTION key "Convert AAC Verison" becomes a regular selection and you can now select it to convert to AAC. It's a great trick with YouTube video you only need the audio from.

Hope this helps! Cheers!

"Had I been rude, I would have apologized."

Except that you were (many times), and you didn't. I wasn't even the first person to call you on it.

If you can't be bothered to self-analyze enough to realize what rudeness is, and how your consistently dismissive comments qualify as such, then there's nothing that I can write that will make you suddenly see the light. Instead of thinking, you've decided to take the lazy way out and call me a troll. So be it.
