Nothing special now, except for the Blackberry item.

We have to look at the hosts file because that is probably corrupted.

Now you have to be very careful (read this through before starting to do something):

In the Finder menu click the GO menu, in there choose 'Go To Folder', type in /private/etc/

In that folder look for the Hosts file (just that), copy it to the Desktop.

Go out of the folder.

On the Desktop CTL+click the Hosts file and choose GetInfo, add something to the name to make it different from Hosts, for example add 'copy' to the name.

Then CTL+click this Hostscopy file and choose 'open with', open it with Textedit.

Select all the text showing and copy it (CMD+C), then post it here with paste (CMD+V.

I will loook at it.

Yes, as I thought.

There are a large number of adobe sites blocked.

Normally that is when you have (or had) a hacked adobe application (either from a torrent download, or a keygenerator, or whatever). These hacked applications most o aref the time infested with trackers or other malware.

If you still have an app, that has been hacked, decide whether you will use that "for good" and pay for it or uninstall it. When you do not have these we will eliminate these from the hosts file. This is not easily done faultless, so tell me what you want.

You must decide, the hosts file wil function correctly as it is, but you will not be able to activate or register any app of which it must access one of these sites.

Hi there Lex,

Sorry for just dropping out on ya. I've been really busy going on trips and etc. However, during that time my battery has the x sign again. The weird thing is that everytime the x sign comes on the battery the computer slows the heck down! I thought i'll tell you that because I think there is a connection.

Oh by the way i did not know the adobe application was a hacked one. It was on here when I got it. I don't have the money to get the app yet but I'd like to take it all out.

Here's my up to date etrecheck and look forward to hearing back from you!

Hi Shan,

A. What Adobe app is it that you want to have? Maybe we find an alternative.

B. I have no idea what causes the X on the battery, at the same time as it slows down, maybe something in the hardware.

Do the SMC reset like this:

1. Shutdown the MBP. Connect the power cord.

2. Hold the LeftShift+CTL+Alt(option)+Power buttons at the same time for about 5 seconds, then release them at the same time.

3. Then turn on the MBP normally.

Do this cycle three times to make sure that even stubborn firmware reacts.

After that do a Pram reset:

1. Shutdown the MBP

2. Exercise holding the leftAlt(option)+CMD+P+R at the same time (see point 4)

3. Turn on the MBP.

4. immediately after starting the mac and before the grey screen appears press and hold the 4 keys mentioned in point2, continue holding them until you hear the startup chime for the second time, then

5. release the keys.

Let the mac start.

Tell me if it helps.

Hi there!

The adobe photoshop app is what I want to have and I believe that's the hacked one. Is that what could be causing me all the problems all of a sudden? Would it be better just to take out all adobe applications and start fresh?

Ok, I did both the SMC reset and Pram reset and my computer is working a lot better. Question, are these safe thing to do to your computer once in a while? I've heard that holding dow the power button for 5 secs is bad, is SMC reset and Pram reset the same thing?

thanks!

Hi Shan, I thought so: CS, a very expensive app. For me it is too complicated, expensive and in the Cloud. I use Adobe Lightroom, which is local on the mac. For perspective changes I have Viewpoint. LR is rather complete, I must say and includes a very good library interface. An other alternative is Adobe Elements, even cheaper.

There are also free image editing apps, like Gimp, but I have little experience with that. For me the catalog/library handling is the most important. There is one very good free app: iPhoto !!!

Not a bad idea to uninstall everything Adobe, then decide what to do, we can change the hosts file too later. Use uninstallers from Adobe for the uninstall. I need an etrecheck list to check aftwerwards.

Your second question: these are safe but unnecessary when there are no issues; 5 secs power button: that 'story' is from old old days when PC's and Mac's had a little (p)ram battery in it. But even then it did not really hurt.

Tell me what you want to do now. I will assist.

1. Look at Gimp. I think it is free. There is a superficial overview of some designer apps here:

2. Uninstall all Adobe apps with their uninstallers (search on the adobe sites).

3. make a new etrecheck list, so that we can find leftovers if any.

I will be travelling today and tomorrow.
