you can block all numbers not in your contact list by doing this:
All calls from numbers not on your contacts list will now be blocked. You can however still see all numbers that attempted to call you as missed calls. Verify the numbers and if legit, add them to your contacts list to receive any future calls from them.

We to the same question. Its an old thread, but the problem still persists, and as this is the thead that shows up near the top in google searches, this is where we reply
Having an option to auto-reject any incoming calls without at least a phone number would be a nice option to add to iOS.
Lawrence, what you say may be generally true, but not always. For months now I've had 3-4 "Unknown" or "No Caller ID" calls per day, and if I *do* answer them, thecaller disconnects. If I don't answer them, no voicemail is left me. I'm pretty sure no one hates me enough to continually pester me this way. Rather, I believe this may be a mining scheme to record voice ID data, or some other scheme I can't even imagine. I appreciate your kindness and patience to give your time answering forum questions. I come down on the side of those who want the choice whether to block unknown callers. Maybe it used to. be a "bad idea," but no longer. Apple should do this.
That's not technically true. While there is no number, the operating system, iOS, could very well give the user the option to config enable "Block all calls without caller ID data". So if a call comes in with no phone number, the phone never rings. It is doable - the phone can give the user the options of what to do when an incoming call is completely unidentifiable. But Apple chooses not to.
Could be a bad idea, but giving uses the CHOICE is the question, not whether its a good idea for everyone.
For me, I want it because I'll never answer a cell call from a blocked number. If I want you to call me on my cell, I'll give you my number and if its important you'll identify yourself. Don't want me to know where your calling from, fine, and I won't answer. My physician has other ways of contacting me.
I'd like to have the OPTION of making sure my cell phone does not ring for calls I know that I will not accept, so I don't spend time having to get the phone out and deal with the ringing.
The default could well remain the way it is - it rings in, but just allowing me to 'block' an 'anonymous/nonumber' call is an option I have.. don't see where thats an issue.
i've asked them and they don't do it - i even tried saving NO CALLER ID as a contact but that still doesn't work as it needs a number!!! however on utube there is a way of showing who the caller id actually is so next time i shall be trying it - it seems ok as it's not dependent on an app it is something that is in your phone BUT a lot of bother when you should just be able to BLOCK these *****!!!! and that's technical!

Smartphones are quite capable pf recognising a call with no caller ID.
Android users have been able to block specifically those calls for quite a while alr.
If this is an overriding requirement for you, get a phone that works the way you want it to.
Dear Lawrence Finch, thank you for posting a useful answer, it really hurts when my mobile service provider has restricted its user's to use an incredible feature of iphone. It appears to be greyed out when ever i tap on
settings >> phone >> show my caller id
Here is the screen shot of it Is there any possible way in the world that exists to fix this issue be it a bug, a tool or so. please reply back. I would be really thankful to anyone who helps me getting out of this.🙂
The only way to block your caller ID is through your carrier. It isn't really a feature of the phone; the switch on the phone just notifies your carrier's network that you want your caller ID blocked. Most carriers support the standard code *67, but it must be entered as part of the phone number each time. That is, to call +1.555.555.5555 you would key in *6715555555555. If you want to always block your caller ID you must contact your carrier's account management. My carrier has this as an option when I log into their online account management.
If your carrier doesn't offer it check with other carriers; in some countries it is illegal to block your caller ID.
Create a new contact, you may name this new contact “No Caller ID”. Here is how:
Got my first “NO Caller ID” today. Yes, I know it is impossible to block them but for selecting “Decline” or double-clicking the side button.
That's also known and adds nothing new to the thread.
What secrets do you think Lawrence is giving away and to which enemy?
Keep in mind that the numbers are not actually blocked. The rings are silenced. You will still have a record of these calls just in case one was valid. Also, the callers can leave messages (but the scammers rarely do).
I suppose you are not strictly familiar with español. The phrase is often use by mothers to their children. It has to do with flies (moscas). It is akin to advice sometimes attributed to Twain, ““It's better to keep your mouth shut and appear stupid than open it and remove all doubt”
Exactly! The option might be very simple to implement - when iPhone recognizes “No Caller ID” (“unknown”) incoming call - it should act like when you are in “Do Not Disturb” mode! Just reject call (or play “busy line”).
Maybe jailbroking iPhone does that???
As you point out, it would be easy to do. So the fact that the feature is not available means that Apple by policy decided not to implement it, and has followed through on that for 5 years now. Perhaps they know more than you do about legal implications, side effects or collateral damage of having this as an option.
Thank you for your quick answer. Currently there is only one way to do: edit Do Not Disturb mode and allow calls from everybody group, but it is a bit of “hacking” or “not so ease use” for ordinary user. Collateral damage are only end users that are forced to ignore Hidden ID abusers because of (not always correct) law. Can you imagine what would happen if end user is public figure (President, for example) - what he has to do to stop being annoyed by Hidden ID abusers? Please implement this feature and add “I agree terms of use” and that would be it. No pain & everybody will be happy :)
