Crashing EVERY DAY since installing Maverick

OK, I give up and I need help.

My MBP NEVER crashed. Then I installed Maverick. Now, I have multiple crashes every day. Actually, I had to write this twice because my computer CRASHED in the middle of writing it!

I removed all 3rd party software, still crashes. Reinstalled Maverick, still crashes. Stopped pluging in my iphone to charge, still crashes. Deleted all music and videos, still crashes.

Checked my RAM and HD for issues, including viruses. None found.

I can't run iMovie or Garage Band for more than 3 minutes without by computer crashing. And it ONLY seems to crash when I have Apple software up, especially Mail amd Messages.

Here's my computer info:

15-inch, Mid 2010

Processor 2.66 GHz Intel Core i7

Memory 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3

Graphics NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M 512 MB

Software OS X 10.9.2 (13C64)

Here's my latest crash report. I'm one more crash away from wiping my drive and staring over. REALLY don't want to. Please help 😟

The_Joan,

some 15-inch Mid 2010 MacBook Pros are known to have a defective NVIDIA GPU. Since you’re getting GPU panics, yours might be one with the defect. Apple had a gratis servicing program for this model’s defect that lasted for three years from the date of the MacBook Pro’s purchase; they still offer the servicing program, but it is no longer guaranteed to be gratis. I’d recommend making an appointment at your nearest Apple store, to have them run their Video System Test on your MacBook Pro to confirm whether or not its NVIDIA GPU has this defect.

The_Joan-

Yours is a good argument, and it MAY inspire a store manager to get you a free or reduced cost repair. The individual geniuses have to go "by the book", they do not have that discretion -- it is up to the store manager.

Remember that unlike the car dealership, Apple is not intent on squeezing every last nickel out of you. Apple wants you to be a happy customer, if possible. Those that scream and threaten to sue everyone will never be happy customers, so they get shown the door.

For what it's worth, I think if you walk in with your receipt, your crash report, and a copy of that bulletin I sent you, you're golden. You're within 3 years of purchase. I don't see how this can cost you anything.

And I'm not positive, but I don't think the VST test would show any problems on a new machine. The failure occurs after time. That's why you want to bring along the crash report. That's pretty much proof it's the GPU.

Excellent, Joan. Glad to hear it. I can't believe they won't just take care of the motherboard swap at your local store, but if they do give you any grief, call Apple support and ask for Customer Relations. They'll grill you a little bit before they put you through, but they'll do it if you go through the problem explanation and be persistent. I've only had to deal with that group once, but they were very service oriented and did resolve the issue for me. I really don't think you'll have a problem though if you bring along those docs. You have the problem and you're within 3 years of purchase.

Good luck!

I have an update for all of you!

So I was gracefully sashaying about my room one evening and managed to trip and slam my hand on my closed laptop to break my fall. The result was a shattered screen.

Luckily my older brother had a spare MacBook Pro, so we just swapped out my HD. Can you guess what year it is?

Mid 2010 MBP with an Nvidea 330. And it took less than 15 minutes to get the EXACT SAME CRASH REPORT?!?!?!?

What are the odds that I have two MBP's with crappy video cards?!?!?

May 5, 2014 7:57 PM in response to The_Joan

There was a whole flock of them where the graphics chips were defective from the factory. It was a Latent Defect, NOT a failure. But it did not really start to show up until later versions of Mac OS X started to beat on it. This did not cause a failure, it just showed the defect that was there from day 1.

The standard diagnostic has never been able to pick this up, so they wrote a new one called the Video-Switching Test or VST. It takes only a few minutes to run and ends in a spectacular PASSED of FAILED banner screen.
