Unable to Order Book from Aperture

Hi all,

This is the first time I've had to use the support forum; hopefully it helps!

I have tried repeatedly to order a book from Aperture however recieve the following error message: "Did not receive a response from application. It is possible that the application does not exist, or that the requested URL is incorrect.

I am using version 3.5.1, am based in Australia, have tried different internet connections and have ordered books using this same method previously. Has anyone else had the same issue?

Thanks in advance!!!

This error can be caused by timeouts - either due to too much traffic on Apple's severs, or firewalls or antivirus software interfering, or incompatible third party software installed, or simply the Energy Server kicking in too early. Try to temporarily disabling firewalls like Little Snitch, antivirus software, and the Energy Saver in the System Preferences.

Check the system status at Apple's page: http://www.apple.com/support/systemstatus/

For iPhoto books it usually helpes to boot the computer into Safe Mode, before trying to order Print products. Safe mode will disable third-party extensions and Preference panes, so some problems with incompatible software will be prevented. Only, Aperture will be terribly slow in Safe mode, if you can launch it at all. But booting into Safe Mode may help to clear some settings, even if you have to reboot again back to normal mode, so give it a try.

Perhaps this time-out glitch is related to the end of daylight saving time in Australia. Check your settings for date and time in the System preferences, also your location settings in System Preferences > Language&Region. your region should be set to australia, if you are ordering from an Australian Store.

Hi Bentendo1980

I had the same error messages as you despite restarting Aperture and repairing the library and file permissions (hold down cmd + opt when double clicking on library) the last couple of days. My date & time is synced with apple servers.

I could get part way through the order process some of the time, and when I clicked on the confirm order button I would get shown dropdown error messages about not being able to connect to the url.

One time though, I had Aperture's Activity Window (Window | Show Activity) open and I noticed that Aperture was actually uploading my album despite getting an error message! (Press Esc to clear the drop down error notice if there is no "OK"/"Done" button or equivalent.)

You can also use Apple's Network Utility (http://support.apple.com/kb/ht5897) to see how much you are uploading every second so you can figure out if your upload has stalled.

So just keep that Activity Window open to see if your upload is going through, because mine eventually did. If it helps, I placed my orders between 2-4pm +8GMT.

Hope that helps 😀

I had the same experience as Jacqueline. I tried all the fixes Léonie suggested except for reinstalling Aperture and still got the error message. The activity window did not show any activity for a minute or two after the error message came up, but after a delay, it finally started uploading and finished with a confirmation of the order. This was for a 20 page book and the preview always looked ok and not washed out.

There are people with differing issues all resulting book purchase failures. The "iOS edited" problem is easily solved by reporcessing in Aperture.

When the images are fine, when there is no library corruption or permission issues, the solution, as unbelievable as it may sound, is to try to "purchase" a free iPhone app from iTunes on your computer. If there is a problem with your account or Credit Card info, you will be prompted to address the issue. Sometimes iTunes will throw up a new Terms of Service agreement for you to accept. But, believe it or not, after doing these things, Aperture will begin processing the order and uploading the book if there are no other problems.

Sadly, in my case, the order was completing and the book began to upload with that big progress bar... at about 75% uploaded, Aperture crashed. This is on a brand new MBP with sufficient everything - fully updated, using Aperture 3.5.1

Now we're back to the "Your Book Order is not complete" message.

Sigh.

So, I selected Aperture in my Applications folder and I tossed it in the trash. I went to the App store and the button at the Aperture App item said "Install." I pressed it, it installed and I restarted my machine (for good measure) and restarted Aperture.

Now, Aperture is crashing all the time. I caught a screenshot of what was going on in the activity window at the moment of crash.

I deleted its preference file from Users > Library > Preferences but that didn't help. Still crashing once activty begins.

I sent a crash report to Apple.

So, now I will restart the computer after a Disk Utility Permission Repair. I will do the DUPR again after restart. I will, select the third Library Rebuild option and pray.

Will update when I know more. Aperture was working fine till I tried to buy a book.

Sigh.

A late progress update.

In order to resolve the shonky washed out images, I have restored an old Time Machine Aperture library file and then amalgamated that with my most recent shots from the newer corrupted library. That's fixed the washed out issue, however I still have the following tasks to complete to determine if this has fixed my entire problem;

1. Recompile my book for publishing (wasn't in the older backup version).

2. Attempt to order (will be interesting to see if the files become washed out during this process).

Will provide another update once I know more and hopefully will close out this thread with a workable solution which won't create me months worth of work.
