My Retina Display has stain damage, HELP!!!

User uploaded file

I dont know how it happened, but somehow my retina display got some weird clear-ish stain damage that is very noticable on a black background. I have tried to clean it with water and a micro fiber cloth like usual, but i think this is not something on top of the screen as much as it is something has like eaten away a part of the screen... I need help! what do i do to solve this aside from replacing the screen... if water and microfiber arent working, what else can i use? I am worried that windex or alcohol will excacerbae the problem, as i suspect it might have been alcohol that caused the problem in the first place, but im not sure... any insight, please? this is driving me nuts

To all staingate victims--

Apple has you covered. They know they f'd up big time so they are offering to fix the screens under their "quality program." No warranty needed. It was a manufacturer's defect that took them a while to figure out. Just visit an Apple Store, drop off your MacBook, and you'll have a new, stain-free screen in under a week.

I brought my MacBook Pro into the Manhattan Beach store on Saturday, no hassles. They estimated five business days but probably sooner than that. I have my work laptop in the meantime so it's not too inconvenient.

Hope this puts some of you at ease. Again, just bring your computer in to an Apple Store and they will take care of it free of charge.

Muchas gracias.User uploaded file

Unfortunately I just know this issue today, and I have screen stain, too. Did Apple announce this issue for their customer in personal? I registered my email address for contacting on the Apple site, and also registered my mac. I guess pretty many people who has same issue but didn't realize it can be fixed. I own 2 Macbook Pro Retina(Early 2013, Mid 2015), and I just want to ask: "Do you think I have to explore internet world by myself for checking all issues without my fault ?"

Just dropping by to state my MBPr suffers from the same problem.

I'm well aware what causes it, and I'm not really expecting any other solution than to go to an Apple authorised repair shop and change the screen. I'd like to leave my opinion on this, though:

No laptop chassis is perfect, but MBPr's are **** near close. Apple's policy has always been to provide users with quality hardware as far as they're concerned, and service that's on par with that. Of course that in hindsight applying coating on a screen with low resistance to skin oils and acids looks pretty dumb, but stuff like this is very hard to predict. However, you certainly pay for what you get, which leaves you with high expectations. One of them is for the company to become accountable for the decisions it takes. Good and bad. I see no excuse against a recall in this scenario, or at the very least a rebate on the price of a repair. Especially taking into account that Apple constantly declares billions in net profits—meaning it's a very healthy company in financial terms. Apple's conduct regarding this problem hurt the trust I have in it solving their own users' problems, so next time perhaps I'll take a closer look at the competition before acquiring new hardware.

Peace out, and keep fighting the good fight.

Your post is the most cogent overall look at the problem to date. Apple has been less than straightforward in acknowledging that the screen coating is a systemic issue, although they have replaced MBP displays (mine, twice). It is indeed a matter of trust -- including trust that a company will own up to a defect that has affected so many customers. I switched to Mac in part because of the assiduously promoted concept that the company was different. After two years of display and other problems with my MBP, my trust in Apple's service commitment is eroded. I see a trend, that Apple has become more like other manufacturers in rushing a product (software as well as hardware) onto the market before it is ready. As much as I still like the MBP, my experiences will have me shopping more carefully next time.

To this entire thread:

After many posts on this particular thread last night (10/23/20016) I watched a video on Youtube discussing the new MBP. And yes it looks awesome. BUT, there is NO I repeat NO change in the anti reflective coating. I love the how there will be no F keys and it you make the bar above the keyboard (where the F keys were) custom.. I am also digging the new track-pad and how you can draw on it. And I am LOVING how we will get speakers in the 13" Pro model..... BUT COME ON!!! The same bloody anti reflective coating with Retina Display! Looks like I will just go ahead and grab an iMac 4k with the most ram and biggest drive they can stuff into it. No offense but I am not buying another rMBP and having the screen fall apart AGAIN.

sigh... I was really looking forward to buying a new MacBook Pro before Thanksgiving... but it looks like my late 2014 rMBP has the same tech minus a bit of ram, SDD hard drive space, and processing speed. The other stuff is just bells and whistles and wont make your computer run any faster, if anything it will probably eat up a ton of ram.

No offense to Mr. Tim Cook but where did the innovation go? Steve Jobs was so bold with new projects and when he re did a project. Apple is becoming less and less like a UNIX-Like OS and more and more like Windows. I fear someday in the future I will be forced to buy some kind of PC and put FreeBSD or Linux on it. ..... /me sighs again.

Just in this case this helps someone from India. Authorized service center in India has confirmed the staingate issue and agreed to replace my 13 inch MBP retina's display for free under the quality program. The warranty expired before 1 year already.

The spot on my screen was too little if compared to the pictures others are posting here.

BUT hey we paid around $2000 and we deserve this. If anyone is getting a NO from an authorized service center guy, its just they might not we aware about this quality program. Just give apple a call and explain them you have stains on your retina screen. They will help you.

Cheers!
