My Retina Display has stain damage, HELP!!!

User uploaded file

I dont know how it happened, but somehow my retina display got some weird clear-ish stain damage that is very noticable on a black background. I have tried to clean it with water and a micro fiber cloth like usual, but i think this is not something on top of the screen as much as it is something has like eaten away a part of the screen... I need help! what do i do to solve this aside from replacing the screen... if water and microfiber arent working, what else can i use? I am worried that windex or alcohol will excacerbae the problem, as i suspect it might have been alcohol that caused the problem in the first place, but im not sure... any insight, please? this is driving me nuts

I had the same issue and the only way to help I found is to remove the coating. I cleaned mine with a tiny bit of ceramic hob cleaner on dry kitchen paper - I had to do this about 3 times until it came off the entire screen. I then wiped it over with a damp microfibre cloth and it's perfect! It only took about 10 mins for the whole thing and now it's like new (except without the anti-glare coating). Hope this helps!

Yes Kamabokohere is a before and after photos. As I said before (pag.34), mine is not a macbook retina, but after I changed the display in 2012, starts to get this ugly spots like bubbles and scratches all over the screen, it looks like were inside, but definitely was like a oily cover over all the screen that get the stains, removing all the cover was my solution. I always clean my macbook, but in this case you have to do much more strength than usual. As Pibo5 shown us there are different types of stains, may be this procedure is not working for all, but may help someones with this kind of stains.

I took my late 2012 apple retina to the Apple store in Amsterdam. They would not replace the screen for me because:

1. it is damage to the outside of the product

2. it is more than 2 years old which is over the guarantee consumers right period in the Netherlands

My apple genius even claimed it was NOT a common problem.

VERY coincidentally a guy sat next to me at the Apple bar with the exact same problem with his screen. Macbook retina from the exact same period (late 2012). He however had apple-care and his screen was immediately replaced!

I was given the option of replacing the screen at my own costs: €457 !!

This is very disappointing for a laptop purchased for almost €1800 in december 2012.

I am 100% sure this is a production fault.

What about you guys?

Mike,

this is how my screen looks like after I removed the coating completely. No more coating at all, but therefore the screen is of course more reflective. I personally refer the reflection over the stained coating. If you look at this discussion at page 8 (+-) you will find my posting showing how much coating I got down with water and a mild window cleaner. The rest was not so easy. Unfortunately I cannot mention it here as my posting will be removed.

Hi from Italy same here.

Bought macbook pro retina early 2014 (February 2014) in Italy and my screen had same result.

I never used chemial agent to clean my screen but only a cloth (85% poliestere 20% polyamide).

I think something is gone wrong.

I'm very disappointed because I paid 2200€ to buy the top in fact of reliability and this is the service that Apple deserved me.

Really hope we can solve kindly this problem

Same problem! I just found this problem now! This is ridiculous! I cannot believe a computer this expensive will have such a problem so soon. Mine is a little over a year, and i no longer have warranty. It's clearly a manufacturer's problem, because I really take care of my computer, and i cannot see how these many people have the same problem and be "user's fault." I cannot believe that Apple would tell some of you that you had to pay for it. That is ridiculous! Mine is only on the left hand corner on the black edge, and I am hoping that it's not going to grow!!!

I'm on chat with Apple at this very moment, and they're telling me to do a mail in order, since the closest Apple store is about 2.5 hours away. I'm just very frustrated with this situation, because I take so much care of this computer, and I see people whose problem isn't getting better but worse and Apple refuses to do anything about it.

I sure hope they see this thread and decide that it is in fact their fault, and they do call backs to get this repaired ASAP.

MacBook Pro Retina 13" Late 2013 (delivered Jan. 2014). I just realized that those are any greasy spots which can be wiped away with some soft cloth, but the same problem described in here. It should be said the the display never ever got in contact with any aggressive cleaners. I'm always putting a soft micro fibre cloth between the keyboard and the display, as the display surface is so soft that the smallest piece of debris (e.g. the tiniest bit of a breadcrumb) can and will lead to irreversible dents/marks in the unprotected surface of the screen.

Same thing happened on my MacBookPro 13" Late 2013. Still within the 1 year warranty. I'll be going to Ivizi next week (certified Apple support) which was advised by Apple support today as there isn't an Apple store nearby. Only cleaned it with a damp cloth, nothing more. I'm considering to also remove the coating from the whole screen as posted by other people but I do wonder how hard it will be to accomplish just that.
