I am trying to prepare for a new iMac, and wonder if I am able to use my CCC drive as startup drive and erase the Macintosh HD? I have the Time Machine on a separate drive and CCC on another drive. Is this recommended, if not would like to hear any other options.

iMac (27-inch Mid 2010), OS X Mavericks (10.9.2), two OWC external drives.
With "garbage" are you referring to just the OS or your user folder/3rd party apps, etc?
Talking about any parts of the other systems that not needed...
I have plenty of time to work on this and considering setting up as new and adding things from the CCC or from external drives I have saved (favorite apps, mail, contacts) and what is on iCloud or use the installer as a clean install.

No, it will not port over parts of old or not needed OS's and will clean up.

I am trying to erase my iMac HD using CCC on external drive as startup disk. When I try to uninstall, get a message that it can't because the drive could not be unmounted. Anybody have a clue how to fix this or a way to erase the drive?
It also states to make sure all apps etc are closed.

Are you booted into the external clone and running Disk Utility from there? You cannot be booted into the partition/drive you are trying to erase.
