"Photos in the Camera Roll of "(your) iPhone" cannot be imported because the device is locked with a passcode. You must unlock the device to import them." My iPhone 5 running the latest iOS 7.1 and I'm using iPhoto '11 v 9.4.3

"Photos in the Camera Roll of "(your) iPhone" cannot be imported because the device is locked with a passcode. You must unlock the device to import them." That's the new error message when I plug in my iPhone 5 running the latest iOS 7.1 into the MacBook Pro running iPhoto '11 v.9.4.3. My Mac OSX is still 10.8.5.

So, I unlock the iPhone by entering the "passcode" before I plug it into the MBP and still iPhoto does nothing. At least it doesn't issue the error message above.

I've checked both iPhoto preferences and those for Photos and Camera in the Settings on the iPhone. There doesn't seem to be anything to change this lack of connectivity.

What next please?

MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5)

You're not talking to Apple here. Use the feedback mechanism here:

https://www.apple.com/feedback/

Bit pointless doing that unless you're going to tell them what versions of the Phone and Mac software you have.

Lastly, the person who marked this solved is quite entitled to do so. For him or her the problem was resolved. That's why it's best to make your own thread for your own issue, noting the specifics of your set up.

I have tried all of these suggestions (except the hostspot option) multiple time (I'm talking like 20 times) and I've always clicked "Trust" on my phone. Neither iTunes nor iPhoto will sync up. What's even weirder is that a couple of times iphoto sort of tried to upload some photos but it only uploaded a fraction of what I have and at random - one photo from my sister's bday, one from family reunion, etc.

Help!!!!

Does anyone actually have a REAL solution?

Jan 10, 2017 8:49 AM in response to emiobe

did additional step of totally turning passcode off (which was weird since phone seemed to still 'auto-lock'). Then restarted phone while still connected to macbook via usb. before the phone had even lit up, I had the error on iphoto. I clicked "Trust" once phone was up and running. Still not loading so hit "unmount" from Iphoto, unplugged phone, and replugged it (phone unlocked), hit "trust" again and again got same error: Photos in the Camera Roll of [my iPhone] cannot be imported because the device is locked with a passcode. You must unlock the device to import them.

Ugh.

Try these steps again using "Image Capture", not Itunes or Iphoto.

1. Plug your Iphone into the computer via USB.

2. Wait for the prompt on the Iphone that says "trust" "don't trust" and choose "trust".

3. Go to "Log Out" from the apple menu on your computer.

4. Log out and then log back in. You will need to know you password to log back in.

5. Once you are logged back in, open the Image Capture Application on the computer. It should now recognize the Iphone's movies and photos. You can then import them to the computer. Hope that works for you.

This was the attitude that made Nokia die down. The developers didn't bother thinking about users who liked their devices, they just wanted to make new models that they were fascinated about, which were not even user-friendly. The same thing goes on here, too. If the old one worked well, why should we get a new one every year just because nobody will bother to add the command string to the software! Make them payable and let us use them.

Jan 10, 2017 11:58 AM in response to salvatore1

Salvatore. Your instructions help 50%. That 50% means that every time I want to download photos to my macbook, I will have to log out and in, and do it several times, before it works. I manage to do it with iPhoto! I don't have Image Capture, only iPhoto, as for a camera proper, I use the camera software, and there'd be too many to clutter my computer.

iTunes doesn't recognize the phone, but, who cares. I don't use it very much anyway.

I have a new macbook and with that the phone works, but thank you for the 50%.

The only thing that is puzzling is that I can not connect to iCloud with the phone - unless the phone is on wifi. There must be a bug in the operator's software, too. They will never admit it.

Well I'm glad you had at least some success. I'm a bit surprised you don't have Image Capture as it is automatically installed with OSX. I've read complaints that some people can't find it in the applications folder or maybe deleted it by accident. At any rate, you have a solution now and I'm glad you do.

As far as cellular syncing issues with Icloud, here's an article about that. Hope it helps.

Don't know if you saw this but it worked for me.

Below is a solution that worked for me and others on this blog. The only negative about this solution is that you may have to follow the steps every time you want to save your photos/videos to your computer.

One of the more popular solutions is to update the OS on all your devices to the latest versions (including your computer). The downside of that is that some third party software will no longer work after the updates. That is an issue for some people (including myself). This is why the steps below may be a more reasonable solution. Hope this helps.

1. Plug your Iphone into the computer via USB.

2. Wait for the prompt on the Iphone that says "trust" "don't trust" and choose "trust".

3. Go to "Log Out" from the apple menu on your computer.

4. Log out and then log back in. You will need to know you password to log back in.

5. Once you are logged back in, open the Image Capture or Iphoto application on your computer. It should now recognize the Iphone's movies and photos. You can then import them to the computer. Hope that works for you.

The issue is with the "Trust" settings on the iPhone, and can easily be remedied by going to General > Reset > Reset Location and Privacy. You may be prompted to go through the cycle of "passcode required..." from the Mac as well as "trust this computer..." from the iphone, etc, but resetting the location and privacy is the solution.

Thanks for the post Bodhi 1320,

I tried that but it did not work with my configuration. There is only one solution that worked for me (see below steps). It should be noted that I have an Iphone 5s running the latest iOS 10.2 and a Mac Pro desktop computer running OSX 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard). I posted this for the benefit of others who will have no success with your solution.

1. Plug your Iphone into the computer via USB.

2. Wait for the prompt on the Iphone that says "trust" "don't trust" and choose "trust".

3. Go to "Log Out" from the apple menu on your computer.

I had this cronic problem since I changed my iPhone (5S>6S). Tried for more than 6 months, tried several option, nothing worked--so fristating!

Finally one option worked

Went to Settings> General > iTunes Wi-Fi Sync

Connected iPhone to computer

clicked ITune logo (I dont know if this last action was really needed)

Problem was resolved

"Photos in the Camera Roll of "(your) iPhone" cannot be imported because the device is locked with a passcode. You must unlock the device to import them." My iPhone 5 running the latest iOS 7.1 and I'm using iPhoto '11 v 9.4.3
