"Photos in the Camera Roll of "(your) iPhone" cannot be imported because the device is locked with a passcode. You must unlock the device to import them." My iPhone 5 running the latest iOS 7.1 and I'm using iPhoto '11 v 9.4.3

"Photos in the Camera Roll of "(your) iPhone" cannot be imported because the device is locked with a passcode. You must unlock the device to import them." That's the new error message when I plug in my iPhone 5 running the latest iOS 7.1 into the MacBook Pro running iPhoto '11 v.9.4.3. My Mac OSX is still 10.8.5.

So, I unlock the iPhone by entering the "passcode" before I plug it into the MBP and still iPhoto does nothing. At least it doesn't issue the error message above.

I've checked both iPhoto preferences and those for Photos and Camera in the Settings on the iPhone. There doesn't seem to be anything to change this lack of connectivity.

What next please?

MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5)

I had the same issue today. I couldn't sync my iPhone 6 Plus to my iTunes. I tried 15 times to plug it in, click Yes to Trust", unplug it, so I called Apple Customer Service. My 2011 Mac desktop says it was "up to date software" but when I called Apple, she told me my Version was out of date & I need to download "MacOS Sierra" from the App Store. Which I done. It took more than two hours to download & install. And reboot it. Finally, after all this I was able to Sync my iPhone to iTunes & Photo with no problems!!! So try this if your version is old. Little did I know I had to download this app from the App Store, I I thought clicking "update software" was enough for my computer lol. Hope this helps.

Hey I had the same issue today. But try this. I was trying to sync my iPhone 6 Plus to my 2011 mac desktop computer. Just like everyone else on this board. I called Apple Customer service. She told me my desktop was out of version (It said my computer was up to date) & I need to download the new "MacOS Sierra" from the APP store. So I did, took more than two hours to download & install. And sure enough it worked no problem. They no longer call it iPhoto, it's now Photos. Try this it will work. Synced my iPhone with no problem.

Not sure if this is still an issue for anyone - I've been having it recently myself and had to google a fix out of sheer frustration. I FINALLY figured out a way around it. After plugging my phone in, TRUSTING the computer, and hitting okay that my phone needs to be unlocked, I opened up my iTunes app on my phone. For whatever reason, my photos INSTANTLY began to stream in. BOOM. Problem has been solved, and I now have the space back on my phone after successfully uploading them to iPhoto. Hope this helps someone else!

This just happened to me for the second time in the last few months. The problem was resolved the first time by following your advice, but it wasn't working this time after many tries. And I really needed to get several photos and videos off my iPhone 5S. What finally worked was a very rapid repetition of steps 3 to 7, as opposed to a slow and leisurely repetition. Why this should have made a difference is puzzling, but it did work. I have no passcode on my iPhone, so it's frustrating that this should even arise. I'm going to ask the folks at my local Apple Store Genius Bar why this keeps happening, since even those with passcodes seem to have the same problem after unlocking.

After not being able to download photos from my iPhone to my computer for many months, I finally solved this issue!

In your iPhone, go to Settings > General > Reset > Reset Location & Privacy.

After Resetting Location & Privacy, I had a prompt asking whether I trusted my phone. I chose Trust and suddenly I could download my photos again. What a relief after so much trouble!

This works! Its easy once you know what to do!

This worked for me too, thank you. I have iOS 10.3.1 on my iPhone 6-plus and MacOS 10.6.8 on my desktop.

That said, Apple should correct this error! To Apple: I'm not going to buy a whole new computer with a new Mac OS just so that I can maintain connectivity with my iPhone. If Apple persists with this policy of trying to force faithful customers (and I go way back to your first computers!) to constantly upgrade hardware and software, I promise - I will buy another product and not return.Reply

Thank you, this worked after 5 trys!!! I unlocked my iphone and kept logging out and in. I will add that I had to go into preferences in iphoto and change connecting camera opens to: image capture instead of iphoto. Then once in image capture, under "connecting this iphone to" I selected image capture, then under import to: I selected iphoto.

I can't upgrade to Sierra, my computer is old and i recently installed new ram and hard drive so that i could update to the most recent OS for this system (Lion 10.7.5). That being said, since that happened every time i plug in my iPhone 6s i get errors in both iTunes and iPhoto (i purchased AnyTrans but that didn't resolve my photo issue, and it's just a lame workaround for iTunes). I've tried all the suggestions listed here; after "trusting" the computer, i receive an additional pop up soon thereafter: "this accessory may not be supported". I tried a different USB cable, tried logging out while still plugged in, none of these things work. I'm very frustrated at this point seeing as how (unrelated) my iPad's wifi on its last software update just decided to stop working altogether (something other 2nd gen iPad users i've found seem to have similar problems). I'm also of the mindset that although a quality product, apple has become nothing more than a cash grab, pushing its "updates" to make their pricey products obsolete. Sure, their longevity is solid, but the updates pushed on its userbase undermines that. So I have a faster computer now, with more memory and i can't do a darned thing with it that i could before. Needless to say, I will be returning to the PC world after this. My phone is already up for an upgrade anyway, and i could drop as much dough on a powerful gaming PC that i could on a mediocre Mac that's going to be obsolete after the next release or two of an OS.

After 2 hrs of trying all the other suggestions here, with no results, I just fluked into something that worked for me. It's the most stupid thing, but it worked:

1. Open iPhoto preferences on your Mac

2. Under General, set Connecting camera opens: to iPhoto (when I opened it, it was set to No Application)

3. Connect your iPhone

4. Click Trust on your iPhone when it asks you to.

5. It automatically starts downloading.

6. When it is done, it will ask you if you want to delete the downloaded photos from your iPhone - answer whatever is good for you.

7. That's it.

I'm using a 17" 2011 MBP with 10.7.5 & iPhone 5s iOS 10.3.2

Good luck!

This was only solved in the simplest of situations.

This issue is NOT solved and it is a programming issue the Apple team needs to look at. I see this on Older Macs and newer Macs and is getting worst with each IOS "update" to the iPhone. I switch to the iPhone because I wanted a phone that nicely connected to my computer for photo downloads, no extra cost to get my photos. THIS POST IS NOT SOLVED!!!! It MAY be solved if you have the very latest Mac and latest iPhone (do not run updates). icloud is NOT a solution, I will not pay extra to upload and then download photos. PLEASE solve this Apple!

I have used several macs and several iPhones, and have unlocked and Trusted My Computer every time!

If I am lucky after a few or several retries, it may work (phone unlocked and trusting my computer every time).

The Point is, this discussion, hosted at discussions.apple.com shows up first when one googles the error code they get. AND my point is that it is NOT solved and the sooner Apple admits it is a problem in the software and NOT the user, the soon it can be fixed. I find it hard to believe we need a 3rd party app to make iPhone and Mac work together?

You don't have a point, I'm afraid. This forum is people asking other users for help with their issues. Read the terms of use you agreed to when you joined sometime. It explains it all.

This person got the help they needed and their issue is resolved. They mark their issue resolved. It's not a statement by Apple about anything. Apple don't communicate here, hence my suggestion that you use the feedback mechanism.

What google shows is neither here nor there. Take it up with them.
