"Photos in the Camera Roll of "(your) iPhone" cannot be imported because the device is locked with a passcode. You must unlock the device to import them." My iPhone 5 running the latest iOS 7.1 and I'm using iPhoto '11 v 9.4.3

"Photos in the Camera Roll of "(your) iPhone" cannot be imported because the device is locked with a passcode. You must unlock the device to import them." That's the new error message when I plug in my iPhone 5 running the latest iOS 7.1 into the MacBook Pro running iPhoto '11 v.9.4.3. My Mac OSX is still 10.8.5.

So, I unlock the iPhone by entering the "passcode" before I plug it into the MBP and still iPhoto does nothing. At least it doesn't issue the error message above.

I've checked both iPhoto preferences and those for Photos and Camera in the Settings on the iPhone. There doesn't seem to be anything to change this lack of connectivity.

What next please?

MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5)

Clearly Apple wants us all to save our music and photos in iCloud (and pay for the privilege) as there is obviously no will to fix the problem that has been caused by a gradual disconnect through successive updates to the MacOS and iOS software. Sadly I doubt this will change and so we are being asked to simply suck it up! I have tried every suggestion that has been made by the good folk of the Community and cannot get my iPhone 6 to talk to my good old 10.7.5 Mac Pro any more. Can't remember which iPhone 6 upgrade was loaded with the iTunes sabotage bomb but I would happily go back to it if it was possible. My old iPhone 4 (which I have converted to an iPod now that Apple has decided that my good old trusty 160GB Classic iPod is also no longer allowed to talk to MacOS!) works fine in syncing with iTunes - surprise, surprise! I know Apple has a business to run and need us to continually upgrade our hardware so they have something to sell us even though it is still perfectly functional but this is a serious ******* for someone who has been an Apple dedicated user and advocate for 30 years! Why not just tell us that the physical syncing of iTunes is being gradually phased out in favour of Cloud-based pay-for-use storage, rather than simply ignore all the issues raised on places like this community! Not very professional and poor treatment of the dyed-in-the-wool Apple users who have kept the faith over all the years.

Terence, I am sure there are some combinations of MacOS and iOS that still manage to talk to each other - as I said my old iPhone 4 and my old Mac Pro with OS 10.7.4 still do but my iPhone 6 and my wife's new iPhone 5SE do not. My iP6 did when I first got it but it stopped with an update along the way somewhere. It also stopped talking to my iMac with OS 10.10 on it around the same time. From what I have read on the forum so far, it seems that all the folks with the same problem have a phone with a fairly new iOS update trying to talk to a relatively old MacOS.

I am certainly not accusing Apple of a "scam"! It is simply that I believe they have an agenda to move us all to the cloud over time and by not providing continued support for issues (I have not seen one comment directly from Apple about this issue except "upgrade your OS"!) they are leaving themselves open to this suggestion. There have been hundreds, if not thousands, of comments on this forum alone on this issue which clearly demonstrates that there is a substantial enough problem that Apple should be spending a bit of time on helping us solve. A large percentage of iPhoto iusers won't be using iPhones and vice versa and there will be plenty of people with a near-latest operating system so there is actually far less than the "hundreds of millions" who will be even in the iOS / MacOS combination that seems to be the root of the problem. I have tried everything that has been suggested here with absolutely no change to the issue. Anyway Terence, this discussion, whilst stimulating, is not solving the problem! If you know of someone who can figure it out, I would be delighted if they could post here all the possible issues and solutions in a consolidated document for all of us who are yet to have it fixed!

Terence, We have 3 users in our family who would like to download photos and tether internet from phone to Mac, in our rural area. At time of purchase of iPhones, it worked. Our Macs are of different ages, and now over time we are loosing the ability to do this. Tethering internet is gone, must use wifi. Downloading photos is a crapshoot. If one repeats the step as stated in this form, it does seem to connect, but you must do it many times. I am afraid to run updates, in fear of total disconnect. I did put in an apple feedback form and I did also call and tried to make a point this needs to be looked at, not sure it worked. The fact that we see it as an issue on 3 systems (one with all updates on both devices and of about the same age -not very old) tells me it is an issue. It is interesting that some do not see it, and I would love it if that was the case for us. I would like to see this situation looked at. I did beg the apple support person to do this. I thank Venturer Greg for also bring this up. Dropping is not good for people in areas that icloud is not a viable option and may never be an option. I also feel this is a security issue. I would feel more secure if I could still Tether internet to my mac. Wifi just opens up another security concern. I would like to make two other notes: Every time when I connect to power my phone to my mac, it asks me 2 times, do I Trust my Mac, this tells me there is an issue, one popup is enough. Some had mentioned it could be an issue with safari version or itunes versions, I personally do not see why either of these programs should stop downloads or tethering internet. They are programs and should not effect the OS. If they do the connection, then I question the programing logic of this thinking and it should be stopped. We really are looking for solutions, the sooner we see it as an issue, the soon we will get solutions.

It is patently obvious that Terence I wouldn't be having this whinge if, after having already been to every single one of these fixes in this and other threads over the past 6 months or so, I had found one that worked in my situation!!! From many other answers in this thread it is pretty clear the various fixes haven't worked for plenty of others either, like BradZehr below!!! The problem is real!! I await, without holding my breath, a solution that works for my combination and setup. In the meantime I will probably find a simpler way, like buying some opportunist third party's software - a party that will surely perceive the problem as real and take the opportunity to benefit from it and give all of us who have not been able to find a solution to date some relief!

Nora,

The one post that states the below steps still works for me, not a great solution, but works. Repeat ... Repeat...

1. Turn on your computer and then open iphoto.

2. Enter iphone passcode to open your iphone.

3. Plug your iphone into your computer.

4. Click "OK" to the message that photos cannot be imported.

5. Click "Trust" this computer on your iphone.

6. Unplug iphone

7. Replug iphone

If this fails, repeat steps 3-7 until it works.

(I have to repeat it several times, but it eventually accepts my iphone and allows me to import my photos)

Same problem here, a year after you.

Repeating ad infinitum did nothing.

Found out APPLE IS TRYING TO SELL US MOBILEME! Of course!

So I went to iPhoto'08 preferences to check all settings, found out new things: In "sharing":

"Your MobileMe account configuration is not correct. You must set up your MobileMe account in System Preferences"

Only it is a payed app to sync what was free before. Phone, laptop, iPad.!!!!!

Clicked next, "Are you a MobileMe member?. Try MM for free (60 dats no charge"

I shouldt need to, Apple!

An hour-long phone discussion with Apple Support yesterday solved this question and sorted a couple of others.

As for this one, do not ignore any messages which pop up when you plug in your iPhone and ask "Trust this computer?". The correct reply is "Yes", not "Cancel".

OK, you cancelled like I did, thinking "What on earth is this for?". Mistake. You can force the issue by having iTunes open when you next plug in your iPhone. Tell the iPhone that it can trust its old friend, your computer and voila! Your photos can download into iPhoto again.

Thank you, Jay with Apple Sydney, Australia!

I also have this problem...no apps are open on both my iPhone 6 and mini. I've tried several times and neither will not sync to iTunes on my computer...I have upgraded to Yosemite...how can I fix this?

I've turned off both devices and restarted them thinking that would work. Thanks in advance.

I've also asked both devices to trust my computer and still am not able to sync.
