iPad consistently fails to deliver iMessages

For the past few weeks, I have been having a lot of trouble sending messages from my iPad. I used to use it all the time, but all of a sudden, all of my messages say 'not delivered' a moment after I send them. Sometimes it takes a few seconds with nothing under it, then is will say 'delivered' or even 'read' for half a second or so then switch no 'not delivered.' Usually it doesn't help to retry, although rarely the messages do actually go through. If there's any way I can make messages work reliably again let me know!

This is an iPad 1, iOS 5.1.1 (latest possible update) 16GB wifi only.

It actually seems better than usual today. I'm on Facetime with my girlfriend and I just texted her a few links from my iPad and she got all 3 immediately, even though my iPad says the last 2 did not deliver. Oddly they all went to her phone, but only the first one (which appears normal to me) went to her laptop. These were sent in our existing conversation. I will try sending them with the 'new message' button instead of through this conversation and see how it works. I'll post back soon and let you know if it is any better. Are there any things in my settings I should check? I don't think anything has changed when it stopped working but if you know how the settings should be I can make sure mine match.

Settings > Messages > Send & Receive > is the only one you really have to worry about

but your girlfriend should also check these settings on both her phone and the equivalent setting on her laptop.

My best guess from what you just said is that she has her phone set up with both her phone # and her email address, but her laptop set up with only the email address, and you are using her phone # as your contact for reaching her.

But the other alternative is simply that she changed her settings on her laptop since the first message in the historical contact you are using. In which case the link to the laptop is simply broken, and by initiating a new contact it will repair itself.

She and I both send from our emails. I just checked and all of my devices send to her email. Her email is loged in to iMessage on all her devices. I receiver messages from her with no problems on all of my devices. It just seems like something more isn't right, since she can read a message from me on her phone but my iPad still says it is not delivered. It almost always says they are not delivered even though sometimes I literally watch her pick up her phone and open it. Even once she replies it usually still says they're not delivered. I have never had a "not delivered" error on my iPhone or iMac, only the iPad so I do not think it is a problem on her end.
