Every video is lagging and choppy?

Every time I try to watch videos online they are lagging and choppy. I've tried restarting my router, tried restarting my iPad mini. I can watch the videos on my iPad 2 with no issues.

I have had this issue off and on for 6+ months now. I am not sure if what I do fixes it or if I just get so frustrated that I start skipping every video. Last night the problem came back. I deleted all un-needed apps but not youtube. I cleaned out the pictures. I have no music. On a 16GB 4s I have a little over 7GB free. I cleared out safari history, cookies and data. I have closed all apps. I have rebooted the phone. I have done all of the tuning ideas like disabling back ground updates, background app refresh, etc. Bluetooth is off. Battery is fully charged and internet bandwidth is not an issue. The choppy video happens in Live Leak, Break, YouTube, HBOgo, FaceBook and any video played from webpages. I have chosen low def SD streams with no change. As reported above, the audio is fine but the video runs at about 1fps. I can jump to different parts of the video and it will play fine for about 3 secs and then starts chopping again. I have also tried pausing at the beginning to let the buffer fill up. No difference. If I was going to point fingers, the video decoding engine of iOS is the culprit. If I remember correctly, this started happening after the first update of iOS 7.

Another thing that I should mention.

This issue seems directly related to the YouTube app.

I've just watched a video which I know will always lag via the app.

However, opening up Safari, going directly to the YouTube site and watching the same video, it didn't lag once.

In fact, I noticed the buffer bar increasing faster than the playback.

It must have gotten itself up to a minute ahead of the actual playback which is exactly what I would have expected.

I've just watched another video via YouTube.

This video is a little over 27 minutes and I was able to watch it without interruption, or degradation of the video to compensate for buffer under run.

I should also add that I am much further away from the hub now and that like the last video, this one was watched in 720p.

So as a method to combat the lagging issues, just watch the videos via the YouTube site in SafarI instead of the app.

Its a solution until either Apple makes some changes in the next version of iOS, or Google pulls their finger out to update the app and correct this fundamental flaw.

I Had this problem and here's what I did to improve and fix the vids...

1. Delete and re install app

than

2. Run lower resolution on the videos you watch. My wifi is strong enough to play high quality videos like 4k but the iPad can't process that so I have turned down to 720p and it runs smoothly now. No problems on my side for now.

oh and I'm running ipad gen 3/wifi

Check your Data with you provider. I have been having the same issue and didn't know why until i realized! I have unlimited data with At&t, well my wife and I just moved and just had a baby well we would wake up at night to feed the baby well i would turn on netflix on my phone and we would watch movies while she fed. Well just last week the videos were taking longer to load and not just them it was all videos from Facebook, YouTube, *****Tube....yeah so i did everything from deleting the apps, restoring network settings, restoring phone even then i realized that AT&T was slowing down my service because i had used 10GB of data. The day the billing cycle was renewed....boom fast videos again.

I realize I am responding to an old post, but an internet search for answers brought me here. After three pages, I didn't get an answer, so hopefully this solution will work for you. It did for me.

Mine had the same issue. Choppy video - audio was fine. I did not have the YouTube app so this was not the problem. My wi-fi speeds are great so this was not the problem.

I did this:

Open settings

Click "Safari"

Click "Clear History"

Shut down by pushing lock button (on side) and home button (beside screen) together.

Start again by holding lock button on side until apple logo appears.

Video now works fine. Hope this works for you.

I have been having the same exact issue but my first experience was in my Plex player. I use this app across multiple platforms and devices at home and remotely and every other one worked fine. I poked around and discovered that yes every video I played back whether remote (stream) or local all had choppy / laggy playback. I reloaded the app as other suggested with the Youtube app to no avail. I reset everything everywhere else on my network first in part because my iPhone 4s power button is broken. Eventually I powered down the phone completely (w/ assistive touch for those that don't know) and after restarting (yes by plugging it in to sync) everything is now working well. The lag in all sources seems to have gone away. Whatever setting or temp file seems to have been committed, cleared, whatever at restart. I hope this helps somebody else; It took me about two weeks to go through this whole process. Cheers!
