apple tv does not access iTunes - 4/17/2014
Apple TV (3rd generation)
I'm experiencing this problem as well with a 1st gen Atv. It is accessing the Internet, but won't access movies, music or tv.
Re the Internet radio:
The radio still works if you use the playlist method. Had it playing today, but didn't actually turn the tv on to check anything else, which is the beauty of using the playlist. No need to turn the tv on.
The above makes sense because from my experience Atv always gave preference to the Internet, whether it be radio or YouTube. If you have anything downloading from itunes, it would pause it to play Internet content.
Same issue with my Apple TV- 1st generation. Hope the issue is resolved soon. Thank you all for your information. I have been working on this for hours.
I have the same issue here [1st gen Apple TV]. Noticed yesterday, but thought it was an issue on my end. Investigated further today after the issue was still on-going. While I don't use it every day, it has been a very reliable go-to device for an evening of entertainment until now.
1st Gen ATV with same issue. Mine can see all local media, connect to shared computers, passes internet connectivity test but has NO access to iTunes store. Will wait for a fix. Amazon Prime filled in nicely tonight.
So there are a lot of people with the same problem with ATV 1st Gen. Anyone knows if Apple is doing something to solve this matter or is just a trick to make us buy a more recent ATV??
I am having the same issue - cannot connect ot itunes (here in northern Canada) - been such a reliable device - a go to for years - reason I buy apple - and I buy lots - if this is a new Apple trend to force purchase of new devices I for one will be most disappointed. In that case Apple will pay in the longer run more than us I'm sure.
Hope issue is resolved soon - my son and I were going to watch a movie - when we discovered this issue - I spend a few hours trying to figur out - what a waste of our time. Finally found this forum so I can now rent movie from cable company instead for now I guess.
C'mon Apple make it right -
Yes, Apple are clearly working on it.
There has been some progress today, at least here in Australia.
Playback is working because the ATV can now establish a connection with the server and you/I can get to the iTunes store menus but not yet purchase anything from it.
A message is now dispalying that the "iTunes store is presently unavailable, try later".
That's actually the state I had yesterday and earlier today, then after a reboot trying to address the poblem, all the menues became abreviated offering only the local viewing options. Just did a reboot again, and same thing, so no change here in Canada, but it is the Easter long weekend, so I am not expecting much here until Monday. That was one heck of an Easter Egg Apple gave us 1st gen'ers as a gift. [I sincerely doubt it was deliberate, as tehre was on official announcement about support ending fo the 1st gen units... though I imagine that is in the near future for us]
I have three Gen 1 ATV's all with the same problem here in Australia.
Cannot play any loaded movie content when it is connected to the internet as the video and sound just pause all the time.
Also Movies menu keeps trying to load every two seconds and only displays My Movies and Trailers.
Only relief is to plug an ethernet hub/switch into the ATV's ethernet port that is not connected to the internet and I can then play movies from the internal HDD.
Hope Apple fixes it soon as it is a real pain...
BTW I don't know if anybody knows why but the ATV serial number no longer shows (it displays only n/a) in the iTunes Settings screen.
Interesting!
That has been my experience for the last few days but it is not happening now, since this morning (in Canberra).
Until this morning my ATV was spending most of its resources furiously trying to connect to the iTunes Store server, generating a lot of internet traffic in the process and thus not having enough resources available to play my local content (video and music) properly from its hard drive or from my computer's iTunes library.
I'm playing an HD TV show I recorded recently right now, with no problem. Couldn't do that yesterday. Same problem as you.
Whatever Apple has done so far might take some time to propogate through the system.
Same problem as everyone else. Had company over and wanted to watch a movie in the basement and could not get it to connect to iTunes! Spent over an hour troubleshooting and thought I was going crazy until I saw these other posts!!! I also have 1st Gen Apple TV. Will be ****** if this doesn't get fixed soon. Thanks for ruining my evening btw!!!!
My ATV1 also out for last 2 days. Router, updates, factory reset done. Same symptoms. No change. Brisbane, Australia.
I don't really know why it should be different for me at the moment except that I believe that CSIRO here in Canberra run some servers that have a role in how the Internet works in Australia.
I know domain name certification is done here and maybe authentication/SSL type certificates propogate through here also.
Just guessing but mine, whilst not fixed entirely, is much better than it was.
This is the strangest issue I've ever come across. I use my ATV very often that it (along with Netflix on my Wii U) provide all my TV and movie watching other than the occasion of watching a BD or network TV.
I replaced an HDMI cable seeing the flickering movie cover art, can't watch a single thing without awful stuttering so I did the shotgun approach...
I completely restored everything on it and lost my iTunes authentication which will not work anymore for my purchased content and music. After restoring all my content directly via ethernet cable to my MacBook Pro, it was working like a champ. That is until I expected to work as it should.
Now my problem is twofold. Same stuttering issues on any video content, and now for my iTunes music, movies, and TV shows will not let me authorize my Apple TV at all even after logging out and logging in on the iTunes login dialog.
Hours wasted and the only thing that is somewhat smooth is my own ripped CD's in music playback (UI is still stuttering like mad despite a complete fresh restore) and my purchased albums now no longer work despite directly connecting to iTunes to get this thing working.
Very unhappy is a major understatement at this point.
disconnect your ATV from the internet, this should fix the studdering and sluggishness of your ATV, and allow you to play your local content. Whatever the fault is [I suspect faulty XML iTunes data from Apple] it is causing the ATV frimware to consume mass resources in trying to process it, affecting the responsiveness of the UI and playback capabilities.Hopefully Apple will have this resolved soon, and have everything back to normal.
