I'm experiencing this problem as well with a 1st gen Atv. It is accessing the Internet, but won't access movies, music or tv.

Im pretty certain its not a software update issue, thinking about it. When the issue occured on mine I factory reset it. After the reset I noticed my ATV had version 3.01 ... now Im 99% certain it was a later version before the factory reset. (can anyone confirm if a factory reset, replaces the software version to an earlier one in the process)

Now that it has 3.01 when I go into "software update" on the ATV it displays: "your apple TV is up to date"

Obviously 3.01 isnt "up to date" as there have been later versions available.

what Im getting to is... if its not a software update issue and all of our devices have different connections to the internet (routers and firewalls etc) then theres probably no amount of troubleshooting that will help on our end to resolve the issue. So I guess it might be best just to wait until Apple anounce something or check the device periodically incase it starts working again.

One question is there another way to perform a hard factory reset of Gen 1s, I think there was from memory? Probably wont amount to anything but anyone think its wortha try?

Hi,

Another frustrated gen1 user here. My 160gb ATV started playing up lastnight.

All the movies synced locally were flashing / refreshing and the remote wouldn't navigate correctly. A few hours of playing about, only way I can use the thing is by removing ethernet.

I have my iTunes content on the time capsule 3TB which sits under the ATV connected by ethernet. My work around so far is to sync what I'd like to view, then remove wired connection - then the box wakes up and operates correctly (minus the trailers and other online content)

I've since formatted the thing, going to 2.4 then to 3.0.1 - then jailbroken, and back to 3.0.1. No change, the OS doesn't seem to make any difference. My ISP is the same, time capsule hasn't been updated in last day, so I was thinking hardware failure of some kind when the ATV tries to talk to the interwebs 😟

Very frustrating over the bank holiday here, as I had TV and Movies planned with family - then lastnight we had to revert to the PS3 to spin a blu-ray.

Not good at all if this is a server side fault, as I nearly replaced this ATV today thinking it had failed after 3 years awesome service.

Waiting to see if we get a fix here, of if I sell my ATV / Macbook / iPad etc if this is a deliberate "retirement" of the Gen1 ATVs

Figured I'd post my frustrations as well, I'm another generation 1 user experiencing the same problems. ATV wont connect to itunes to purchase new content (the option isn't even there in the menu), and stutters horribly when playing my content. I did a reboot to factory restore, and it did not fix the problem - it is experiencing the same issues. It was working fine on 4/18, and this issue started 4/19 for me.

Help us Apple! I've been a loyal customer since the early 90's and this is crap.

Unless it's a specific security related issue I would hope they will fix whatever changed at server side - it may simply have been retiring an old server IP or name causing failed access.

That said they SHOULD have foreseen this kind of issue.

I simply cannot believe they do not have stats which tell them how many devices and which hardware/software versions connect to iTunes servers and if tens of thousands or more AppleTV 1s are still in use they should at least issue a warning if store support is suspended.

Again, all affected should bombard the official feedback link:
