apple tv does not access iTunes - 4/17/2014
Apple TV (3rd generation)
I'm experiencing this problem as well with a 1st gen Atv. It is accessing the Internet, but won't access movies, music or tv.
I did all the trouble shooting on 4/17/14 EXCEPT the factory restore as I figured out the problem was not mine (it was only a hunch that was correct). My ATV1 has Software 3.0.2, but as I noted in one of my posts the Software section that normally reads "Software 3.0.2" was temporally replaced by something that read "IR 3.1.2". Then the IR 3.1.2 disappeared as quickly as it appeared. Those of you that did a factory restore, did it restore you to Software 2.0 and did Software 2.0 connect you to the iTunes Store?
Re: "Something was working".
Yes, I may have been responsible for those posts, for which I sort of apologise.
I had limited access to the store with no playback problems for most of yesterday until I rebooted the ATV and it went back to the same problems as the previous three days. A couple of other people have had the same access for a bit.
By limited access I mean I could see all of the store menu items without flickering and all that and play movie trailers from the store and play local content without stuttering even when it was connected to the Internet, but got a message saying the iTunes Store was "temporarily unavailable, try again later" when I went into any of the menu items that led to paid content.
That gave me the impression Apple was working on the issue because it's what one might expect to see when these things happen, but I have no access at all now, same as everybody else.
the software update version showing on my ATV imediately after the factory restore was 3.01.
I can run it again though to see if it restores back further if anyone wants me to. I dont mind
Don't. Avoid factory restores unless you have to.
There are too many users affected for this to be an AppleTv issue - something has likely changed server side that affects AppleTv access.
If 3.01 and 3.02 are affected you can bet earlier versions will be too.
ATV1 was working fine here in Singapore until today (20.04.14). Now experiencing all the problems referred to above.
>>If 3.01 and 3.02 are affected you can bet earlier versions will be too.
yes I agree, thanks. Ill hold off on another reset
My main reason for saying 'avoid' is that like any other kind of software/firmware update, if it goes wrong you can brick the device, so always do it as a last resort when you suspect an issue with the device itself.
Current models offer a 'get out of jail' card with a restore via iTunes, but even that can fail!
Hello from Chicago,
Experiencing the same issue here. Can't tell you when it started, but having all of the same issues. Choppy playback, no trailers or top movies, no connections to anything Apple.
Eliminating the connection to the outside world stopped the playback issues.
I hav two 1st Gen Apple TVs and I did everything to one like restores, and updates. Mine factory restores to 1.1 so I can tell you with that it does work again.
But to get to the newest content, need to update and as soon as you add the internet connection, all bets are off.
yeah understood.🙂 I used to support dial up modems in the late 90s and we had numerous amounts of them returned with failed firmware flash. So I usually hesitate with even updating my mobile OS or computer MB bios
howdy. thanks for sharing your findings. yea sounds like an update roll back isnt a solution then with the link to the store being the thing playing up.
Has anyone mentioned trying different DNS settings? Just a thought...i.e. if its not affecting everyone and is only affecting a portion of ATV owners

I am very happy to say that my Gen 1 apple tvs still work for streaming of my own movies and TV, at least 3 of my Apple TV Gen 1 units. These were early production units that have been upgraded to latest software (3.02) and I have not done a reset recently. What may be noteworth is that I have iTunes running on an old MacMini running 10.6.8 Server and iTunes 11.1.4. I have not upgraded to 11.1.5 given these comments.
iTunes cannot connect to Apple iTune Store. I can only play Movies and TV from my own library, but that is sufficient for my needs, and it sounds like I am doing much better than others on this thread.
I have some Apple TV 1 units at my other house connected to a 10.9 system with latest iTunes. Will check tonight if they are functioning.
Thanks Perry. much appreciated mate. out of curiosity when you were viewing your content on the ATV was it connected to the internet? And if so were the media icons in the top bar on the main menu screen flashing?
If you havent connected it to the internet, dont on my account, was just wondering. As you point out the symptoms might be varied on different ATVs. maybe even in different regions
Just checked again. Connected to internet and I tested by watching youtube content. Still able to stream my TV shows afterwards. Media icons at top have my unwatched content from iTunes on my system. TV shows on Apple iTunes store not displaying (so no top TV shows). Movies similar but icons for iTunes Store shows display, but selecting leads to "cannot connect to iTunes store" message.
To summarize, my Apple TV works fine for watching contenta lready on my iTunes machine (streamed from home network, not on Apple TV itself) but it cannot access the Apple iTunes Store at all. Connected to internet through router. Using Optimum Online, no special equipment or content provider.
