I'm experiencing this problem as well with a 1st gen Atv. It is accessing the Internet, but won't access movies, music or tv.

I have been at this all night and figured out the following:

1. If I plug the Apple TV directly to my MacPro tower via ethernet I am able to access the shared movies/shared tv shows again. Basically the Apple TV can communicate with the iTunes on my MacPro Tower like it used to but it has no internet access (no Youtube for example). I still cannot get access to the iTunes Store.

2. If I enable internet sharing (through systems preferences) from ethernet port 1 to share the internet to ethernet port 2 the shared movies/shared tv shows options stop working and the flickering of the images in the preview bar and sluggish remote control response resumes. Youtube works again but I am back to where I started. No iTunes Store access, no access to the content on my computer, and only access to the Apple TV hard drive.

Something is definatly wrong with whatever the Apple TV speaks with when it reaches out through the internet. Why the Apple TV stops speaking to the iTunes on my computer when it is connected to the internet is a bigger mystery. BTW: I tried connecting through WIFI and it didn't resolve the issue.

So it looks like we now know that's it's not our hardware it's an Apple server side issue.

Surely they would not turn off iTunes Store support for Gen1/2 owners?

Either there is some bad code as they prepare for a imminent new AppleTV that will be rectified- or we are going to very shortly get the announcement of the new Apple TV and a statement,

"Generation 1 and 2 now longer supported"

As an Apple user of some 25 years I would not be happy with this...

Good morning all. I have been reading all the posts and similar posts and want to note a few things:

1. As of this morning (New York City time) I am still having the same problem that I have been writing on.

2. Big thanks to Elkoth who has been doing his best to bring in all the others posting on different Apple Support Communities Discussion boards about the same issue.

Is IrvBD really the only person who resolved this issue with a simple restart? If so please state your ATV model, method it is connected to the Internet, and any other information that is relevant to the issue.

3. Most of the contributors to this thread have an ATV 1st generation like me. I have read in different threads and maybe this one as well that some are experiencing this issue with ATV 2nd and 3rd generation as well. Please follow up and restate your device.

4. I read mention of jailbroken ATV 1st generation and it made me wonder if anyone/everyone/no one following this thread had/has their Apple TV 1st generation jailbreaked prior to doing the factory restore.

5. Factory restore does not solve the problem.

6. The problem is happening all over the world including UAE, Europe, and Brooklyn (BROOKLYN!!!! YAHHHHH!).

7. If this is happening with the ATV 3rd generation as well, running out to buy a new ATV is a waste of time and effort for the next few days (unless you read item 10 first).

8. ATV is rumored to being shipping in the late fall/early winter of 2014 meaning if this issue is not resolved, the ATV 3rd generation users have a SERIOUS issue on their hands unless Apple resolves this issue. If you have an ATV 3rd generation please speak up so that we can track who is affected and if we should go out and drop $99 for an item that will be replaced in 8 months or so with an ATV 4th generation. I find it odd that none of the usual suspects like macintouch or ipodlounge have mentioned this issue at all.

9. Does anyone have Apple phone support and reached out to Apple for some insight or the Genius Bar?

10. And finally, did anyone actually go out and buy a new ATV 3rd generation and if so, are you having the issue? I would assume that you now have free 90 day phone support. If so, throw us a bone and tell us your experience with them!!!

I have the same problem, thought it was a log in issue but youtube and internet on ATV Gen 1 works fine...

I think there is something going on, especially when my movies are refreshing and moving around like there is a virus or problem with the hard drive etc, some others have mentioned the same about their ATV...

Could Apple be pulling the wool over our eyes or are they trying to get us to all to purchase a new ATV, one that allow for more then just entertaining us......

ATV1, no problems ever since 2009, always used in Korea and Japan. As of this morning in Japan all the same problems others describe -- can't access the itunes store, jittery, responds slowly to remote. Is there some blocking of non-US IP addresses? Internet works fine and Youtube works fine and can link to my shared library but no itunes access. Does not even show the itunes options in the menus -- it only shows 'My Movies, My TV shows' etc. Thanks for whoever can shed some light.

Hi all. Same problem here. I have 2 apple TVs, Gen 1 (silver ones), at first I thought there was a HDD problem, then when I tried the second one and saw the same thing, I thought it was a virus! So at least I know now "its not me".

Here are some factoids:

  1. Both my boxes were running FireCore
  2. All has been good since 2011
  3. I thought maybe apple was not to keen on FireCore and had cut me off (paranoia)
  4. I then reset one of them back to factory defaults, and did an uograde of the firnware to the latest available
  5. After all this, I am now having a GREAT time watching trailers ... that's about it

Let's hope we get a fix (and someone from apple to actually care about this). Far as I can tell, its a nice long weekend here in Aus, and I'd be happily spending money on iTunes ... but will have to go see what on the Play Store instead.

Having the same problem as everyone else with my 1st gen Apple TV. Main menu interface is really slow. Tried playing Frozen that was saved on the HDD for my daughter and it was updating the picture every few seconds and the audio kept cutting in and out. I dont understand why some connection with Apple's servers would make the UI and video playback so horrible. I restarted it twice, then factory reset after the restarts did nothing. I thought it was my harddrive going back, so in a way I am happy to see Im not the only one with this issue.
