I had this problem too with an iPhone 5s. I bought a 3GS in '99 and this is the first time I've had a problem. I was connected to my Mac, not by wifi. Fortunatly, I do my updates in iTunes so I had a recent backup (last night 17 GB). Something went wrong but it was late last night and didn't pay much attention and let it pass. This AM I started up my iPhone and it was in recovery mode. I seleced the restore from backup option but nothing seemed to happen (it created a small MB sized backup file) did a very quick Sync and cyclyed back to a state where it wanted to register.

After trying to do that a couple of times I noticed the "restore from backup" button was active on the iTunes and I clicked it. It took about 20 min but everything seems to be as it was.

One possible explanation of why this happened is that I had limited space laft on my HD (SSD, about 20 GB, maybe less I can't remember) and the backup for the phone was about 17 GB.

I had the same issue where my phone "bricked" after updating to 7.1.1. It wouldn't update and put my iphone 4s in restore mode. I tried to restore it on my computer but it kept giving me errors (connection error, 3014 error, re-cycling to restore again). Nothing seemed to work. The Apple tech that helped me was helpful and we tried a few things. Finally I had to use a different computer with a fresh Itunes download and that restored my iphone.

I did lose everything on that iphone but luckily it didn't have much on it. I feel for those that had their lives on it.

Hope this helps someone out.

Good luck
