Logic X UI bug (Meters freeze, Mixer and Arrange window unresponsive)

Logic X UI bug (Meters freeze, Mixer and Arrange window unresponsive)

Meters freeze, window is kinda buggy like "windows" style, playhead doesnt move too. Whole UI doesnt respond.

Some of my projects load this way now=( Projects originally created in LogicX, everything was ok like 4 days ago, 10 midi tracks with Kontakt 5 on them, and couple audio tracks. I didnt change a thing.

Now when i load a project, sometimes its all good before i bring out mixer (cmd+2) and try to fit it to display, then GUI lags and freezes starts. Some projects loads this way from the start, even if no mixer window is open.

What can it be ?

Not very helpful =D What do u suggest ? Move to ProTools ?

Sorry, just a comment on the fact that Logic 9 runs better on older Mac operating systems, and that Logic-X would probably run better on Snow Leopard if it was in fact able to run on SL. Also, getting software for free or at a greatly reduced price has the effect of lowering expectations. It's obvious Logic hasn't been thoroughly tested on recent versions of the operating system in a "real world" way. I would venture a guess that Garageband is more thoroughly tested than Logic. I have no advice except this: Is Logic working for you? If not is it worth it to wait it out rather than try to move to a new platform. Also consider this... Apple machines are not backwards compatible with older operating systems, in one sense you are forced to used the newest releases of operating systems and "pro" applications, which by most standards seem to to be beta releases at best. Apple customers are it's beta test team at this point, unswerving loyalty makes this possible. It is good to remember there are always choices, most people tend to stick with what they know.

Yep, i agree, but my previous mbp 2011's GPU had a 90% chance to just stop working and i decided to upgrade while i still can sell this machine. Now im stuck with LPX and Mav. I think i'll wait till next LPX and OS update, and if it will remain the same i will migrate on Pro Tools, hope it is working better.

And about our topic - What can it be? Any ideas?

I think it all started when Apple started changing the grapics system, which was in Mountain Loin if I recall. Logic-X is now using all new graphic routines... (at least according to what I heard). That's why it it will only run on the last version of Mountain Lion and any version of Mavericks. Currently the graphic routines on Logic and the OS need optimization as they are somewhat kludgy on machines only 2 or 3 years old... Since you have a new MBP it seems odd... isn't this a continuation of an old bug that started in Mountain Lion?

not had to look for any answers on this forum until now was happy plodding along on LP9 decided to give X a go and run into similar problems, comes up with varying outcomes this See pic , came about using 'open' new from custom template only logic plugins on channels strips etc no other programme opened,

the 1st sign of the problems seems to come from scrolling across the mixer page, the meters freeze, then you can't select anything. If you close the mixer window back onto arrange page , by clicking in and out of inspector you get like a duplicate channel window.

Basically its f**ked (excuse my French) and definitely a bug.

Will go back to LP9 where everything runs happy

PS running MBP Retina and Maverick, Logic X 10.0.7,

also just to add i'm not sure when it updated to 10.0.7, but when Logic X was first released i used it with some old L9 projects and never noticed this

issue

Get to work Apple ;-)

Users that want a reliable DAW should -never- have automatic updates on, if there's anything that will hose a good working system it's an update, especially an operating system update. As a DAW user you are in a teeny-tiny minority, most operating system upgrades do not take you into account until it's too late and you make a big stink about it.

amen Pancenter, although i must admit , Logic / Mac on the whole has been flawless for me , as a preference i do prefer the flow and the look of L9 to LP10 so i'm quiet happy to plod along until i fully integrate myself or not. LP10 was a birthday present as i could think of nothing else for the wife to buy me, anyway like i said mac and logic has been flawless and back to the topic in hand , after playing around for a few hours replicating this mixer freeze, i detected by "get info" on LP10 and ticking 'open in low resolution' seems to have resolved the issue

I think it's worth pointing out... that the issue in many cases is related to Retina and how much CPU time supporting such a high Res screen takes from both the main CPU and more often the GPU... and while Retina is a big step up in Graphical display... there are large penalties to pay in terms of the amount of processing power required to support such displays. Add that the loads Logic places on the system.... as well as OS X itself running stuff in the background and foreground and well, lesser powered rMBPs are going to run into trouble...

As dirty30 pointed out.. turning off Retina support within Logic (selecting Low Res mode in get Info) helps a great deal in limiting these kind of 'slow responding' GUI issues... but to give a comparison, running a nearly 3 year old 3.4Ghz i7 iMac with a Radeon 6970m 2GB graphics card.... I cannot recreate any of the GUI 'slow down' issues easily.... with LPX and Mavericks..

As an aside,

A neighbor of mine has the latest and greatest rMBP..... 2.6Ghz i7 model... fully expanded... and he wanted to run some PC games in it via Bootcamp... so after installing Win 8.1 he found the performance nothing like as good as he expected... So we did a side by side test with my iMac.. Bootcamped the same Win 8.1 and game on my iMac.... and the performance from my slightly aging iMac was averaging out at nearly 3 times better... at the max res (2560x1440) than his rMBP which cost nearly double what i paid for my iMac... 3 years ago.

Read into that what you will....

A Retina thing then, just as AOS described. I'm just saying that's it's prudent to not have a working system auto-update. When an update comes out check the boards and see if any problems are reported then do a manual update. Problems like these do occur.

That's an interesting test... is that all because of Retina support or were there other factors involved.

Also, since Windows-7 is still a fully supported system and will be for a couple of years minimum he would get the best performance using 7, unless the games require 8.x.

Jul 28, 2014 1:16 PM in response to Pancenter

Hi Clancy,

Not sure why he had 8.1 installed.. Maybe there are some features in 8.1 (or hardware support?) compared to 7 that he wished to use.... (Much like Mav and SL.. for some people..) but I simply bootcamped the same version of Windows to make for a better comparison...

Note: My iMac has a faster processor.... 3.4Ghz i7 compared to a 2.6Ghz i7 but even so the differences seen in performance... were way beyond what I would have expected taking into account those different Intel procs....

Having said that...It wasn't a very professionally done comparison.. There are other differences like the various different i/o hardware for example.... and of course two totally different Graphic cards... but the NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M with 2GB GDDR5 memory on board his rMBP, using the latest Nvidia PC drivers... should have easily 'smoked' my much older Radeon 6970M 2GB (with likewise latest Radeon PC drivers) based on similar tests I've seen, done on otherwise identical PC hardware..... but that simply wasn't the case.... My iMac easily performed so much better at the higher resolutions.. until we dropped resolutions down to the equivalent 1080i both computers and then his rMBP pulled ahead quite nicely in terms of frame rate for that particular game (Elite Dangerous) with Fraps (The PC frame rate display utility) running in the background

Wondering if anyone else has had this problem. My graphics went nuts today. I assume it was something I did in a template, since it only seems to happen when I start from there.

As an aside, I was using a custom GUI from fcasoria. I don't THINK it is related, since it was fine for over a week.

Additionally, I MAY have accidentally deleted Logic's original Mar Resource folder. Is it available online separately?

No.... Didn't you make a backup of any type before you altered things?

If not (and if not you really should be making regular backups of your system) then your other choice is to delete the Logic Pro X app and redownload/install the app via the Purchase Tab in the Mac App Store app....

Sep 12, 2014 12:19 PM in response to The Art Of Sound

Sadly, I was working LATE at night. I thought I backed up the original Resources folder, but it looks like I backed up the customized folder instead.

I'm hoping someone on the LPH forum is willing to upload theirs to the dropbox (it is the one in Mar Resources Version A)

On the plus side, trashing that one bad Template has fixed the graphics problem, so worst case, for now I just use the custom GUI. It DOES look great.
