I updated to 7.1.1. After wirelessly downloading, I was instructed to plug my phone into iTunes. Once plugged in, it said my phone was in recovery mode and had to be restored to factory settings. I restored and tried to restore my last backup unsuccessfully. I lost every contact and picture of my two year old I have. Why did this happen?

I found a Youtube video that explains a simple yet effective way to recover all the data I lost from the 7.1.1 update (without the use of thirdparty software). It was pulled down. Good luck all and Godspeed!

Same - charge cord and itunes icon is all I can get too and mine is an iPad - ever since the update I did today. So wish I hadnt!!!!
My wife's I Phone 5 stopped getting service this weekend, so I followed the guides here at Apple and the same thing happened to me. It told me I needed to update the software and when I did, it crashed with error code 1. I tried two different computers and everything. The phone is 1 month old tomorrow. I called Apple and they are sending me a refurb, but that scares me too. I don't want to get charged $649 for a refurb phone if they somehow blame me for causing the problem after upgrading the phone's software. Then, if I pay full retail for a refurb phone, do I get my original back?
7.1.1 crashed my phone. It's now brick. So tired of taking my iPad Air and iPhone into the apple store after every update post ios6. I will never update my phone nor will I ever buy another apple device. It looks like apple doesn't care about its customers anymore. So long apple, hello droid
