"Storage almost full" message on iOS 7.1.1

Shortly after I updated my iPhone 4 (on AT&T network) to iOS 7.1.1, I started getting "storage almost full" messages popping up. When I checked the available storage under settings, I saw that it was indeed down to 0. After synching to iTunes, I saw that the "other" category of data was taking up well over half of my 8GB of storage. After some experimenting, I noticed that it seems to be related to running the music app. When I run Music, the available storage shrinks quickly and has nothing to do with the actual size of the music files (it's the "other" files that take up room).

I've completely restored the phone from backup and this hasn't helped the situation. What's going on here?

I guess we all know by now what the issue is (iTunes Match constantly crashing) and what devices are being impacted here (older generation iPad and iPhone models). As correctly pointed out by AmishCake the forum won't be able to resolve this and the issue needs to be brought to the attention of Apple, in fact they need to acknowledge it as an issue/bug. So far my efforts to contact Apple directly in that context have not been successful but I will keep trying and report back in case of success. Meanwhile however I believe it is good to document via this forum thread how many Apple users are being negatively affected post the update to iOS 7.1.1 so that Apple eventual seriously take this up and resolve the issue.

Well, for what it's worth (not much), got my iPad mini (first gen) back from the tech support at the retailer (John Lewis in the UK) and their chap rules out mechanical fault. Told me what I already knew but at least they've confirmed it. I think the iTunes Match issue is the most likely; would try running my now-returned device without it for a few days if I didn't rely on it so much...

Hey ho. Let's hope that the latest release of iOS software resolves this.

Hi Guys,

Was hoping to update you once Apple support had done something but 3 weeks later they are just calling me with standard trouble shooting which I have already done and weird suggestions that don't make any sense.

I just thought that I would mention some things to those who may want to escalate it also.

Do a full restore as new before you get to them, play some music through your phone with airplane mode switched on to prove...something, mention that this has only happened since the update, that the problem disappears when you have match switched off, that there are many people around the world who are having the exact same issue and try and point them towards this thread.

After all this, the lady said she should maybe put me through to the itunes team...!!!! err, maybe yeah!

the worst bit was that the advice she was currently going on was that she wanted me to ERASE my itunes match music from my cloud and then put it all back on from my hard drive.....!

I don't know about you but one of the main reasons I got itunes match was to alleviate space from my hard drive????? So that would have been a total disaster for me.

if anyone can perform that action, then could you do that and let me know if it had any effect?

Cheers,

Dave.

This is sadly not fixed in iOS 7.1.2

just applied it on my iphone 4 and iPad mini, killed all apps, rebooted then reseted. 4.5GB available.

I then activated iTunes Match and played an iCloud playlist. 1h later, I get the message "storage almost full" and 0 bytes available.

this really killed iTunes Match :-(

Back to to deactivating it, but if they don't fix it, I don't see why I should continue paying for a service a cannot use!

That's bad news for us all. Be careful requesting a refund though. I did and they just cancelled the subscription altogether with less than 24 hours notice. Apparently the money will materialise soon. Most importantly, make sure you have a local copy of your music as I didn't and I had to reactivate the subscription straight away or lose about 80GB of tunes.

Same here, just installed the 7.1.2 update and the memory erosion continues. Very bad customer orientation by Apple, in fact very bad! I am still trying to get around the teflon gateway into Apple support however will not give up and keep this thread posted about any progress, good or bad. We are all paying a yearly subscription fee for iTunes Match, so irrelevant of the device this service should work across the board.

Same issue - error shows across all my ios devices at the same time. Will show no storage space available, will do a reboot and the storage is back until the error shows again. Genius bar had me reset to factory on the devices- worked for a while then started again. Went back and they thought it was a bug on the imac. Did they same on the imac, worked for a bit and now has started again.

Not only do i get the error message across the devices but it also greatly impact the performance of the apps- crashes them or slows them down.

It has to be an issue with IOS, itunes match and the cloud sync.

What worries me the most is every time I hear of someone with the same issue- they all say when they go the the Genius bar- they are told 'we've never seen this before' 😟

I don't understand, are you all saying that "storage almost full" isn't my fault for putting too much onto my iPhone? I have a 5, the first 5, not a 5C or 5S.... I've been trying to delete stuff to make room as I can't sun properly and am worried about doing a restore in case anything not backed up or synced gets lost. I do have iTunes match, which I regretted having before, had a break for a year, then thought I'd try it again, as thought that if the music was streamed off the cloud, it should free up space on my iPhone - is this not the case? Am Confused!
