"Storage almost full" message on iOS 7.1.1

Shortly after I updated my iPhone 4 (on AT&T network) to iOS 7.1.1, I started getting "storage almost full" messages popping up. When I checked the available storage under settings, I saw that it was indeed down to 0. After synching to iTunes, I saw that the "other" category of data was taking up well over half of my 8GB of storage. After some experimenting, I noticed that it seems to be related to running the music app. When I run Music, the available storage shrinks quickly and has nothing to do with the actual size of the music files (it's the "other" files that take up room).

I've completely restored the phone from backup and this hasn't helped the situation. What's going on here?

I'm also seeing my storage evaporate since the update to 7.1.1 on my iPad mini. I use iTunes Match on that device. My iPhone 5 has iTunes Match turned off, and I've never seen the issue. Multiple factory resets (with both restore from backup and without restoring a backup) have done nothing. The problem starts again shortly after the reset. ATM I've turned off iTunes Match on the iPad mini to see if that stops the issue.

Hi,

I would show them Settings -> General -> About -> Diagnostics & Usage -> Diagnostics & Usage Data

There you will find multiple log files starting with

backupd_2014

itunescloudd_2014

plus some others indicating very frequent crashes which I believe are related to iCloud Backup and iTunes Match plus the fact that the memories rapidly evaporates.

You can potentially reset the phone in front of the person, take a screenshot of Settings -> General -> Usage to capture the available storage after the reset and then use the Music App with iTunes Match activated and return after 30-60 minutes showing how much storage has been lost during that period of time.

Good question if they have a duty to provide a working software for iPhone 4 users. I am sure they will find language in their terms and conditions to circumnavigate any duty in particular for a phone that no longer is being shipped (only the iPhone 4s is still available).

Good luck and cheers!

Yes, exacly what MC Turbo says. The only addition is that in my case it takes only about 30-60 SECONDS of running for the memory to be eaten away and the "Diagnostics & Usage Data" to pile up with messages. If you really have the time, then back out all of the iCloud stuff and show that the problem stops.

Again - Good luck and let us know what happens!

I am using an iPhone 4S here in the UK. My phone is the basic 16 gig version and has approx 5 gig of memory free. I subscribe to iTunes Match and use the icloud to store my music etc. if I listen (stream) music for an hour or so, the phones storage becomes full with the usual out of memory warnings.

In settings... General ... Usage.. The phone shows 0 megabytes of memory left. If I then go to music app within 'usage' and look at the size of data it shows a small amount ... Less than 200 megabytes used... Which I then delete.

I then go to the music app itself within settings and turn off music match and choose option to turn off "show all music" I then reboot the phone and my 5 gig of memory suddenly returns.

I am pretty sure there is a problem with the new version of iOS 7.1.1 that is causing this issue.

I have tried a full reset of the phone and restored a backup but the problem keeps returning when I stream music from the cloud using iTunes Match.

I have reported the matter to apple via their support website.

I have tried a complete restore of an iPhone 4S from scratch without restoring any backup and the out of memory issue comes back once music match is switched on and I have streamed/listened to music for a while. I feel certain therefore this is an issue with iOS 7.1.1.

Goodness knows how long it will take apple to fix this. I cannot even find anything which shows that the company are aware of this issue. Just having confirmation they are aware, would really help otherwise i am left here with a doubt that it may just be a hardware issue. Not that this had been a problem for me prior to the iOS update.

I guess the only thing I can do now is to wait and see. Pity Apple don't put out a prioritised list of things they are fixing for the next update.

I'm experiencing the very same issue, albeit on two iPads. A similar - but far shorter! - thread is at https://discussions.apple.com/thread/6166138 and I'll link to that so we all have as much information as possible.

I've updated to 7.1.1 on iPhone and on the two iPads. All working perfectly fine unti then, although it may well be a coincidence. The iPhone is working normally with none of these symptoms, but both iPads (iPad mini and iPad 2) are affected in the same way.

I have experienced the same symptoms as you, namely the available storage will gradually diminish over an approximate 72 hour period to zero KBs available. I have verified that this is not an erroneous warning or reading, in that trying to download an app will fail, as there is not sufficient storage.

That is not to say, of course, that the device should be stating that there is no, or limited, storage available. I am using the devices normally and the total storage used is never more than 5 or 6 GBs. It is totally wrong for it to record that more storage has been used.

I too have found that switching the device on and off again resets the storage reafings, but as you too have experienced the problem then swiftly returns. I have tried restoring the device, both from my iTunes and iCloud backups, and as a new iPad for the reason that the problem could have been with corrupted data in my backup, but the problem swiftly returns.

I took the iPad mini to my local Genius Bar and they were not able to resolve it. They put me on to Apple Support who have been helpful but have not been able to identify the problem. I'm rather dismayed that the possibility of a bug in the release was not mooted by them. Having spent an inordinate amount of time on it - quite beyond what a consumer should have to do, frankly - I returned the iPad mini to the retailer under extended warranty. I am however very sceptical of this being a hardware failure, for instance some issue with the local flash storage, because of the unlikeliness of that, the fact that others including you are sadly experiencing the same issue, and also because there is a similar problem with my iPad 2.

It is helpful to note here the potential issue with iTunes match, to which I too subscribe. I sometimes stream from that (did they at some point change it so it streams rather than downloads on iOs, as with Mac OS X?) but there's no way that it would buffer GBs worth of music. Clearly however it may not be the content of the music but instead some clash between Match and storage.

It would be great if we could all identify this as a flaw or bug in 7.1.1. I can make do with power cycling my devices until it is fixed, but I think we all need Apple to acknowledge and then deal with this as appropriate. If it is not an issue with 7.1.1, then I am running out of ideas.

Best of luck with your issues; if I hear more, and when I get my device replaced or returned, I will post.

I'd like to chime in that this issue is happening on all of my legacy iOS devices.

My wife's iPhone 4 and iPad 2, and my kids iPad Mini all have this exact issue, consistently. Coincidentally they all have Match turned on, a requirement for the Mini as it doesn't have enough space for their music.

As has been said before, my iPhone 5 is immune, as is my iPad 4. Everything else, though, is a cluster****.

Beyond that, the incessant crashing on EVERY device since the iOS 7.1.1 device is ridiculous. I've been critical about some past apple issues, such as the silliness that was Match at launch, but these recent issues have made me question any future purchases. My iPhone and iPad were in much better shape with iOS 7.1, so much that I didn't hesitate to update to 7.1.1, which has been the biggest misstep apple has made in my mind. EVERY device on this version crashes constantly. I can't so much as delete multiple apps on my iPad without a huge crash.

Once again, you aren't addressing Apple by posting to this forum, just users like yourself. If your devices are constantly crashing, this is not normal behavior by any means. Have you tried restarting, resetting, and restoring as advised in the users manual? If yes, have you taken the devices in to the Genius Bar to have them evaluated? Ranting on this user-to-user technical support forum won't get you anywhere.

May 30, 2014 6:32 AM in response to AmishCake

I can't answer for mandangelo. As for myself, I have done all that you have mentioned - Genius Bar, restore, etc etc - and the problem remains. The Genius Bar folks refused to believe it was an iOS 7.1.1 problem. Their response was "We didn't do anything that would have affected iTunes Match".

Do you have any idea how to get the proper folks at Apple to take action?
