I'm also experiencing this problem just today. I have an iPhone 5s. It's not our operating system 7.1.1 because everything was fine for the past 3 weeks. Nothing changed with 7.1.1. Coincidentally this same problem occurred the first week in May. Has anyone asked AOL tech support whether they are on some sort of service schedule on their servers the first week of the month? Try setting your AOL mail account to fetch every 15 min. This way at least you will receive notifications that you have mail as an interim solution until this AOL problem is resolved.

I emailed AOL mail support and they just got back to me. Here is an attempt at a solution. I have NOT had a chance to check to see if it works, but I figure I would post anyways to see if it would help any of you guys.

Hi there,

I am sorry for this inconvenience, nevertheless I am here to help you out and let us see what can be done to help fix the issue.

Reconfiguring fixes most common issues experienced on AOL Mail using third party email applications. Please follow the steps listed to resolve this issue:

How to delete my AOL account on the email application?

1. Go to Settings.

2. Tap on Mail, Contacts, Calendars.

3. Under Accounts, tap on AOL.

4. Tap on Delete Account.

How to manually set up my AOL Mail?

1. Press to select "Settings" from your SpringBoard.

2. Tap Mail, Contacts, Calendars.

3. Select "Add Account" from the "Mail" menu.

4. Select "Other".

5. Select "IMAP". Enter your name in the "Name" field, your full email address (xxx@aol.com) in the "Address" field and a description for the account in the "Description" field.

6. Scroll down and input the settings for your Incoming Mail Server. Enter "imap.aol.com" in the "Host Name" field. Enter your full email address in the "xxx@aol.com" field and your password in the "Password" field.

7. Scroll down and input the settings for the Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP). Enter "smtp.aol.com" in the "Host Name" field. Enter your full email address in the "xxx@aol.com" field and your password in the "Password" field. Click "Finish". Press the "Save" button in the top right hand side of the screen.

8. Mail will then check your mail settings. It will verify your settings and add the email account. Now when you press Mail it will take you to your mail account.

Please tell us if this solution has worked for you. If you need further assistance, please let us know.

Look, it is AOL's problem. This solution isn't the answer to the problem, no more so than last month's issues were an iOS update problem. I contacted AOL through feedback tonight. The rep promised to pass on my concern. I suggest everyone who is having the problem should do the same, and be sure to state flatly that this is a problem last month that was resolved by AOL. Don't give customer service reps a chance to suggest any "solutions."

My guess is that AOL has made some software changes in response to the recent hacking, and the IT guys are still trying to work out the bugs.
