How do I turn off my IPOD??? I used to be able to do this!!!!

Hello.

Really need your help now. I have an IPOD nano. Never had a problem with it. Used to charge it through my computer but it never fully charged so I just got a charger the other day.

Well, I charged it up good this morning. Took over an hour. I see by the signal in the upper right hand side that it has a full charge.

I have tried holding down the pause thing (like I always did before), does not shut off.

I tried holding down the center thing, nothing happens.

How can I shut off this nano?

Thanks to anybody who faced a similar thing and found the solution.

Hello,

Have you tried resetting your iPod, then see if it will turn off? It may just need a simple restarting from that. See the details in this link:

Resetting your iPod

If that didn't help, then you may want to try a restore on your iPod:

Restoring your iPod

To turn off your iPod, you it may need a couple of attempts. You can't be pressing on any other button while holding "play/pause" button to turn off the iPod.

I hope this helps,

Okay, here's what I did.

I did the hold thing, switching back and forth, then pressing the menu and the center thing.
Nothing changed, it was still on.

by the way, it plays fine, songs sound great, I just can't turn it off. It's frozen.

so I did an update. I downloaded the update, I installed it on my hard drive. I plugged in my ipod, got the message that my ipod needed to be updated. I did it.

Nothing changed, still frozen.

So now I have a fully charged up ipod that won't shut off.

What on earth happened?

thanks so much.

Okay, now I really am ready to throw in the towel.

I did a restore. Followed directions. It restored it to factory settings. It then automatically updated my ipod and put all the songs back.

So far so good.

But i can't turn the darn thing off.

So it's using up the battery, obviously.

Did all this happen because I used a battery charger and plugged it into my wall outlet.

Can that damage an ipod to the point where you can't shut this thing off.

I really don't know what else to do.

I did the hold, toggle back and forth thing, holding down play and select and it resets itself.

But it's still ON!!!!!!!

Help, please

Oh, right now there is an announcment on my ipod screen. it says "Firewall connections are not supported. To transfer songs, connect connect the USB cable provided".

It has never ever said this thing on the ipod before.

Today, (and only after I charged it with an adaptor for the first time), is it giving me this trouble.

I sure hope someone knows what I can do.

Thanks to you all.

Well, well, something new has been added to the mix.

Right now I wanted to make sure that if I pressed the pause button, it would pause and when I released the pause button it would play again.

Oh, sure, it pauses and plays BUT IT DOESN'T LIST ANY SONGS ANY MORE!!!

No matter what I press all I see on my screen is
"Firewall connections are not supported. To transfer songs, connect connect the USB cable provided".

And it plays songs. I can press the right side and it will skip to the next song (without showing me the name of the song) and it does the same thing when I press the left side of the round scrolly thing.

so now not only can't I turn off this thing. The message seems to be frozen on the screen.

So if I want to go walking, I can't select songs. Sure I can play them. But I can't see anything but that message and the ipod itself won't turn off.

Since today was the first day I used the new adaptor I got from ebay, it has to have something to do with that, right??
The reason I got the adaptor was that everytime I plugged it into my computer to charge it up, it only charged up a a bit. So people told me "go and buy an adaptor and charge it in your wall socket".

So I was walking outside, my ipod would not turn on for anything. I figured "AHA, now go and charge it". So I did, and when I plugged it in with the adaptor the screen showed me the charging signal.

Then it said "charged".

So I selected some song, and then I went to turn it off by pressing the pause thing and holding it down for 5 seconds (this is how I've always done it). Well, it would not shut off.

So now I have a message on my screen that makes no sense to me and I can't shut it off.

don't forget, I did the reset thing, I did the restore thing.

Oh my, what on earth can I do now?

thanks to anybody who can help this creature.

Sincerely,
Mel

Sorry that I'm not going to be any help at all because today I experienced the same thing with my nano! Exactly! Couldn't turn it off and I get that same firewall connections message. Then - it suddenly got HOT like the little sucker was on fire! Unbelievable!

I did manage to get it turned off eventually. After trying to reset it. Frankly, I'm afraid to turn it back on. I'm not feeling too good about it.

I also have a wall charger, which I have used many times. On Friday I let it charge up for a good long time. But as I mentioned, I use the charger quite often and have never had a problem.

I'll keep looking into it myself and I let you know if I find a solution. Please keep me in the loop with regards to yours.

Thanks!

you mean you have been using a charger WITH NO PROBLEM??
Well, that's a good sign.

Boy, we have the same problem, the same message. How did you eventually shut yours off?

I have read where if you let the battery drain out completely (I mean I can't turn the stupid thing off so it's obviousy going to drain itself, right), that if you let it drain, and then plug it into the wall charger and re-charge it then it should work right. Don't know if this will happen but I can't wait.

I'll update you and please do update me if you find any answers.
Thanks, Mel

Hi again,

Possibly the case is that your iPod's "play/pause" button is corrupt or cannot click correctly. To test it, put your iPod into diagnostics mode, and see if anything fails with the button-clicking test:

Reset your iPod (hold down the "menu" and center buttons for 5 seconds.
As soon as the screen goes black, immediately begin to press on the center and "<< back" button for a few seconds. A little chirping kind of sound from your iPod will indicate to you that you have entered "Diagnostic Mode" of your iPod.
Perform the tests, (most importantly the "KeyTest") and see what happens.
To get your iPod out of Diagnostics Mode at any time, just reset it.

If you can't be able to fill in the "pause/play key" section, then you may need to get your buttons repaired.

I hope this helps you,

-Kylene

Oh thank heavens for this topic I guess. After all day of looking for an answer I finally find this topic and with no success I still don't have a solution. Elizabeth-were you ever able to get your turned off? Sorry-I am trying to catch up on the postings. I however, never use a wall charger. Instead I use my USB to charge my nano but also this past weekend the dang thing won't turn off. I can get it to pause, play, etc but it just won't turn off. i have done everything on here except throw the thing against the wall. I don't see how a faulty button could be the problem if I can get it to pause. Any more suggestions? Oh and I do not get the firewall message, never seen that.

Me too. I've had it for just over a week. I thought that I was supposed to put it in sleep mode. Nobody ever showed me how to turn the thing off! The battery keeps draining, and I haven't had time to go to the Apple Store.

Now the screen lights up sometimes, I've charged it for over an hour on my G5, just like always. I can't get the menu. The nano shows up on my computer. I am ready to return this $200 waste of money.

I've reset the ipod, messed with the hold button, but without a screen, it's kind of hard to figure anything out. Sometimes the screen comes on, but it's just white. The words come in really faded out sometimes.

Hi. you wrote the following:
"If you can't be able to fill in the "pause/play key" section, then you may need to get your buttons repaired."

What exactly do you mean "fill in the pause/play key"?

I did the diagnostic thing. I did everything it prompted me to and it seemed to work fine.

I then re-set it and said to myself. Oh, gee, maybe it will turn off this time. No such luck.

so what exactly does "fill in the pause play key mean?'

Thanks, Melody

P.S. One more stupid question. When I go to various ipod tutorials, they sometimes say press the menu and select buttons (on the click wheel I gather?). some others say menu and play button.

Now I have an ipod nano, there is no select button. There's just the wheel and the middle thing (which I gather is the select button), am I right?

thanks,

IT'S STILL ON!!!!!

Hi again Melody,

"Filling in the 'play/pause' button section": I was just referring to the "KeyTest" (one of the tests in the Diagnostic Mode). If you were able to sucessfully complete the "KeyTest" test, that proves that your play/pause button itself isn't bad (i.e., you are able to click it to pass the "Key Test"). That's all I meant, don't bother worrying about it.

When I go to various ipod tutorials, they sometimes say press the menu and select buttons (on the click wheel I gather?).

To reset your iPod, the tutorials will tell you:

Hold the "menu" ( top button on click wheel) and the "select" ( center button in middle of click wheel; this button is sometimes called the "Action" key) for about 5-10 seconds.

some others say menu and play button.

To reset an old iPod (Nanos are not included), you hold the "Menu" and "play/pause" buttons. This is not how you reset a more modern iPod, however (Nanos are included in this category).

To see what I mean, check out this article about resetting. This is probably where the possible confusion began:

Resetting your iPod

After trying all these things, you'll probably need to get Apple to examine/repair your iPod. See this link below:

iPod Service

I hope this answers the confusion. 🙂
