How do I turn off my IPOD??? I used to be able to do this!!!!

Hello.

Really need your help now. I have an IPOD nano. Never had a problem with it. Used to charge it through my computer but it never fully charged so I just got a charger the other day.

Well, I charged it up good this morning. Took over an hour. I see by the signal in the upper right hand side that it has a full charge.

I have tried holding down the pause thing (like I always did before), does not shut off.

I tried holding down the center thing, nothing happens.

How can I shut off this nano?

Thanks to anybody who faced a similar thing and found the solution.

yes, i called the tech support, but they say they can't provide me with over the phone support because i didn't purchase the other plan thingy. And guess what, the apple service center is less than 20 minutes away from where i live, but they say that i cannot bring my iPod directly to them and must mail my iPod over to prevent it from getting loss? And i am responseble for the $39.99 mailing fee?! even though i still have 1 year warranty?! BS!!! if my iPod get any sicker than it already is...i am just going bring it over and watch them repair it.

just want to do a simple survey here, cause some of you didn't included what operating system you use for your iPod (for formate your iPod)...i just want to see if the majority of the people with a problematic iPod use it with Windows XP. Cause the number might be very even. Just want to know.

Zopod, when you purchased your IPOD, it came with a one year warranty. That means you can bring it to any apple store and drop it off. This is what the tech support guy told me on the phone and it was verified by the nice guy from Apple computers who called me the other day.

I have no idea why you were told you have to mail it in. I most certainly never purchased an additional warranty or paid anything over the $163.00 for my IPOD in May of this year and I have returned it twice to them (at no cost whatsoever to myself).

So I really no idea why they tell you to mail it (Unless you purchased it over a year ago). If that's the case, I guess you are indeed stuck.

Now a question for Tetra:
Why do you hate Windows. I have heard many people say this and because I have never used a MAC operating system, I have no idea why some people hate Windows!!!! Can you elaborate for me?

I used to have Windows ME and that had so many bugs I couldn't stand it but when I got my new computer which is an HP PAVILLION Media center with all bells and whistles and which runs XP, my son told me that XP is much more stable than Windows ME.

So I'd love to hear why you (and maybe any others), can't stand Windows!!!

Thanks,
Melody

I had the same problem. It's been going on for 3 weeks. Read your post - figured that I was stuck with never being able to turn it off. Tried a few things and got lucky. Here is what I did:

1. In SETTINGS / MAIN MENU I turned sleep mode to "on" - did not help
2. Reset ipod using instructions on website - did not help
3. Cycled the HOLD switch back and forth - PROBLEM SOLVED!!!!!

I have turned it on and off by holding the play/pause button several times now with no problems. I have gone back into the SETTINGS / MAIN MENU and turned SLEEP to "off" and can still turn it off. For whatever reason, my ipod is back to working.

Hope this helps!

wahahahahaha...HEY!!! IT WORKS!!! I only flick the "hold" switch back and forth for a few times and it works!!!!! i can turn mine on normally again!!! (touch wood) I'll try that for a few days, hope you guys won't get any bad news from me =)

Melody, thanx for the heads up, i'll bring it over to the Apple store next time (hope it doesn't happen). I bet they won't be that cheap to force me to mail it in.

In response to the Windows vs. Mac thingy, i have to say that i am glad that the two companies is beginning to make their things more compantible. Windows, is indeed stable if you don't accidentally delete some of the source files, if you did - for example when you uninstal something and it for some reason got rid of some of those vital source files - than you are screwed. How often have you heard that a Windows user have to "format" their computers, mostly it is becasue of this sort of problems, or bugs/adware. And the problem of deleting source files almost never happen on a Mac (under normal use). I am a user of both OS regularly, and I love them both. And i agree with Melody that XP is very stable.

Hi MxA!

First, when trying to turn off your iPod, be sure that your hold switch is OFF (grey-colored), instead of ON (orange-colored).

What do you all mean cycling the hold switch? I'm kind of confused regarding that. Does this hold switch technique have to do with the sleep option?

Switching the "hold" switch back and forth, on-then-off, on/off a few times can work for some people if they're having problems turning off the iPod.
After "toggling the hold switch", and it is sometimes called, see if your iPod can appropriately turn off.

I haven't followed or kept track what you've said in your posts here, so let me start on a couple of basic things to try if you're having turning-off issues with your iPod.

Have you tried resetting your iPod?: hold the "Menu" and Select (center) buttons together for 7 seconds, then the Apple logo will appear on your iPod's screen.

Attempt resetting your iPod (this will not delete any music off of it) several times.

If this doesn't help, then try a restore on your iPod. For more details, read here -> Restoring your iPod

Also, connecting your iPod to your computer, ejecting it, disconnecting, and repeating that cycle several times can sometimes refresh your iPod and possibly solve your issues as well.

I would advise the both of you to call Apple Support tech line. They will try and help you and give you a repair number. Save that number.
They will then send you a box in which you'll put in your ipod and send it back to them.
Hopefully when it's returned back to you, it will work.

Your only other option it to call your nearest APPLE store and make an appointment to bring it there.

good luck.

I hate Windows because my experience tells me it's a piece of junk. For me, they run quite slow, and as soon as I get one up to speed BAM! someone pulls something stupid and installs some spyware. I dislike them because they're so easy disengaged, and mac seems much sleeker and simpler to me, and much easier to repair. When I have a problem with a mac product, I check the discussion boards. When I have a problem with a PC, I call GeekSquad. Windows just doesn't seem as sleek and simple as Mac does, I think. 🙂
