How do I turn off my IPOD??? I used to be able to do this!!!!

Hello.

Really need your help now. I have an IPOD nano. Never had a problem with it. Used to charge it through my computer but it never fully charged so I just got a charger the other day.

Well, I charged it up good this morning. Took over an hour. I see by the signal in the upper right hand side that it has a full charge.

I have tried holding down the pause thing (like I always did before), does not shut off.

I tried holding down the center thing, nothing happens.

How can I shut off this nano?

Thanks to anybody who faced a similar thing and found the solution.

Believe me if I would have found an email for Steve Jobs, I would have written to him but the first guy there was Peter Oppenheimer so I figured, what the heck.

sometimes it works when you contact the higher ups.

We shall see.

Oh, guess what happened. I plugged in my IPOD into my computer and charged it up. The Firewire message thing went away and my songs came back.

I just went for a power walk. Heard all my songs.

Now I still can't shut the stupid thing off.

So what I am going to do until I hear from SOMEBODY is everyday one hour before I take my walk, I'll just re-charge it. I mean, at least I get to hear my songs.

I honestly have done everything you can do with an ipod to make it work. This one definitely has a glitch.

Well, well, well, the plot thickens!!!

Guess who called me today (I was not home)?

I found a message on my answering machine from a man who identified himself as a representative from Guest Relations from Apple computers. He was calling me about the e-mail I sent.

He will try and reach me tomorrow.

Believe me, at 9 a.m. I will call him. I can't wait to see what he says to me.

Will update.

Yes I did hear from the guy at Apple.
He phoned me yesterday. He had all my notes and he heard all my problems!!! His reponse was as follows:

"Melody, when an ipod reaches technical support, they run complete diagnostics and test everything. When they return it to you and it works, that means the problem was your computer"

Of course I responded, that couldn't be the case, my ipod is freezing, if I want it to work, I have to take my usb cable thing and plug in my ipod for 2 yours, then I'll go for a work and it may work the right way for 5 minutes but then the Firewire message comes back on and I can't control the volume or choose my songs but it does play."

His reponse was: "there must be something happening between your computer and your ipod, but I will do this for you, I will have you send it to me (free) and I'll check it out myself".

I said "you are a sweet potato". He laughed. He did say "Melody, do you have a friend with an apple computer and itunes, that you can test your ipod on that"?

I responded "Nicholas, any friends in my age bracket can't even program a VCR, let alone have a computer in their house". He burst out laughing. He gave me the mailing address and we hung up.

I then went over to my ipod which was charging up for two hours. I disconnected it and guess what.

IT WORKS JUST FINE!!!! I tested it and it shut off!!!

IT SHUT OFF!!!! Hasn't done that in a month!!!!

I made sure it worked then I excitedly called him back and said "guess what, it works fine, I have no idea why".

He laughed and I said "don't think I'm throwing out your mailing address, if this darn thing acts up again, I'm sending it to you" He was adorable and very sweet.

So now it works and it shuts off!!!

GO FIGURE.

Hey, I have had the sammeeeee exact problem as you. What exactly did the head of Apple do that fixed your ipod? I dont get it. Did you send it to him again?
I tried everything too, but I'm not sure what I should do now since it wont turn off...IT works perfectly fine, but it just wont turn off either. When the problem first started, I had that firewire issue too. One time I plugged in my ipod to the computer and the computer shut off, and THATS WHEN IT STARTED TO TURN OF TEMPORARILY. But the issue started once again...
So what exactly happened that fixed your ipod?
Thanks a lot. 🙂

To Jenova and Mxa:

I didn’t do a darn thing to my ipod. If you read my last post, I was speaking to the guy at Apple and he told me to send it to him. I went over to my computer and disconnected my ipod (it was charging). After that, it works fine.

I have absolutely no explanation.

I do have a theory. I believe the Apple IPOD works well with an Apple computer. It seems that Windows XP might have a problem synching with the IPOD.
I have no proof.. But for some stupid reason, the darn thing works fine now.

One can only hope!!!!

Help...having completely opposite problem to the discussion of this thread (i might be better than no being able to turn on iPod), but i can't turn it on the "normal" way. When even i turn it off i have to push the "menu" and the "center" button together (like reseting it) for 6 seconds until the apple logo appears.

I tried doing the self dianostic test (hold <<| and center button after reset) and the test failed at the "sleepshort" test where the iPod test the sleep setting, it never came back on.

I would have thought after so many years of improving this product, they would have debugged it well enough. It smells like a programing problem.

P.S. i tried restoring it with the new iTune, works for a few times (turning on and off again) and this morning it happens again.

P.P.S i also have the feeling that this have something to do with Windows XP. Let's face it, until now, how good is Window's compatibility with Mac products.

Ah, another person with a windows xp thingeee.

I do believe it is the computer, honestly I do!!!

have you tried calling tech support at Apple??

It's hard to get through but they are really the only people who can walk you through this.

I wonder if there is an mp3 player that is fully compatible with Windows XP.
When this ipod dies on me, I'm going to buy a mp3 player that is WINDIWS XP compatible, that's for sure.

My iPod does this sometimes. I have the Sleep option on the Main Menu, and pressing select on that repeatadly usually turns it off.

Adding "Sleep" to the Main Menu
1. Go to Settings > Main Menu
2. Scroll to "Sleep."
3. Change to "On."
4. Go back to the main menu.
5. Scroll to "Sleep" on the menu.
6. Press the Center button repeatedly.

Eventually, the nano should turn off.

yes, i called the tech support, but they say they can't provide me with over the phone support because i didn't purchase the other plan thingy. And guess what, the apple service center is less than 20 minutes away from where i live, but they say that i cannot bring my iPod directly to them and must mail my iPod over to prevent it from getting loss? And i am responseble for the $39.99 mailing fee?! even though i still have 1 year warranty?! BS!!! if my iPod get any sicker than it already is...i am just going bring it over and watch them repair it.

just want to do a simple survey here, cause some of you didn't included what operating system you use for your iPod (for formate your iPod)...i just want to see if the majority of the people with a problematic iPod use it with Windows XP. Cause the number might be very even. Just want to know.
