Mac Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.8)
I have a load of macs running 10.6 and more on 10.8, the newer macs don't have this problem. I also tried different browsers, Chome has the same problem, but Firefox works ok.
In Firefox the thumbnails load, but the comments won't load. I used my "Software Update" yesterday, which I rarely do, and I think that it updated my itunes. I try to stay away from using "Software Update" because it always causes something to go wrong. Safari had been working just fine until yesterday. Is there no solution other than to buy a new computer?
I have the same problem, and Link-button does not work.
I think somewhere in the YouTube has been changed.
Began expierencing this issue on May 6, 2014, as well.
No changes or updates were made to my computer prior to this behavior.
MacBook
Mac OSX v10.6.8
Safari 5.1.10
Trashing Safari Plist does not help.
Emptying Safari Cache does not help.
Resetting Safari does not help.
Re-installed Safari.
Re-installed Flash Player.
YouTube functions properly within Firefox and Google Chrome on this computer.
I updated my firefox to 12.0 and the youtube comments now show up in firefox.
Youtube thumbnails and comments still do not appear when I use Safari.
I found this post in Google Product Forums, which seems to be a workaround:
"what worked for me is...1st i went to www.youtube.com and signed into my account...2nd after signing in scroll all the way down to the bottom of the page until you see were it says "Try Something New!" on the last boarder ( I am using Safari so it may be a bit different if using other browsers)...3rd after finding "Try Something New!" click it then you should see something called "Feather" click "Try it Out" under Feather then click Join Feather Beta...4th go back to youtube.com and the thumnails should load give it at least 30sec to 1min....to leave Feather Beta repeat step 3 but instead of seeing "Join Feather Beta" you should see "Leave Feather Beta" and your Youtube should be working normal again....Feather Beta is good if your internet is slow but you cant have any interactions with the public while under feather Beta...the good thing is that you can switch back and forth very easily when watching videos there is a little blue rectangle that give you the option to leave feather beta. SOOO THATS IT HOPE IT WORKS FOR YOU THE SAME IT DID FOR ME."
That's helpful in the short term...I hope this sorts itself out.
Resolved with the above fix!
I don't know if this will work for everyone but I had been struggling with the same issue today (yesterday youtube was working fine) and I'd been searching everywhere for a solution, then i checked to see if any software updates were available from the app store and there was. I downloaded it and my safari is now upgraded to 6.1.3 and youtube is working perfectly. Just in case anyone is struggling and has a software update available I would definatly try it as it working for me. I just didn't like the feather beta and really wanted it to be resolved properly. Hope this helps?

Nope, this doesn't work. Sure, joining Feather Beta does work, but when you leave it again, your thumbnails stop loading. The reason you thought it worked was that the thumbnails simply got reloaded from the Safari cache. If you start again, e.g. click on a YouTube bookmark to get there, the thumbnails don't load.
The only solution is to stay in Feather Beta, which I intend to do.
My system is OS10.6.8, which I beieve is known as "Snow Leopard". I downloaded Safari 5.1.10 yesterday, which I think is the highest version I can use for my Snow Leopard. This did not solve my problem. So do you know if Safari 6.1.3 work with my Snow Leopard?
Using that "Feather" thing mentioned above works for me. Although if I "Reset" Safari, then I have to open the "Feather" thing again. The thumbnails are all working fine if I do this. And you can also add comments if you change the blue box to "Just this once" (the thumbnails go away if you change the blue box to "Permanently".
No, Safari 5 is the latest that can be used in 10.6 - but I get along with it fine apart from the occasional web designers who haven't twigged that a LOT of people are still using Snow Leopard.
have you tried upgrading to OS X Mavericks? It gave me the option to download it for free in the app store.
I have not upgraded to Mavericks because it is getting soo many bad reviews. I don't want to create more problems than I already have LOL
