updated itunes 11.2 crashes after opening

So, I recently updated my itunes when prompted to the new 11.2 version from 11.1.5, and afterwards it no longer opened without crashing! It would bounce, open for a few seconds, and crash. Before this upgrade I have never had a problem with itunes, which I've been using for years.

I tried uninstalling, restarting my computer, and installing it again. Read through all the forums I could find but no one seemed to have much else to suggest other than deleting and doing it over, which I had already done. Then I even upgraded to Maverick 10.9.3 because someone said that had worked for them (I had been operating on 10.6.8). I love Maverick, but itunes still has the same problem!! Only now I can't uninstall it to try a re-install because it says it "itunes cannot be modified or deleted because it's required by OS X". When I try to re-install anyway it says there's a newer version already installed and won't go forward.

I tried running disk utility, and saw itunes did need a permission repair, so I clicked repair, but I'm not sure anything even happened. It just ran and ran and then stopped running. I did that about 10 times but itunes still won't open. It just bounces, opens for a second, and crashes again. Mocking me.

Please help! What have I not done yet? Or what am I doing wrong? Or how can I delete itunes and run again?

Would running it Safe Mode do anything?

Thanks 😁

This is likely it -- I was a the Genius Bar today and what had happend was that my itunes Library file was no longer visible. We had to create a new library file (he wasn't sure why, but it needed to be done), then copy all the old data into the new file which itunes could read. Sorry I can't be more specific as I am not very tech savvy, but once he created a new folder, named it "itunes1" suddenly itunes was working perfectly!!

Hope this helps all of you who are going through what I was 🙂

I have used Itunes for years with no problems. I just updated 2 days ago and all **** broke loose. It freezes for a minute upon opening and then gets stuck "Processing Artwork" . Once this happens if I try doing anything it crashes. I was able to change the settings for podcasts to manual as a few of you suggested so maybe that will help. Is there a way to disable artwork?

Same here have been working on it all weekend. Blew away my library files and rebuilt it by loading all my files again and then there it was after running it shut down again. That was a waste of time. I have never had an issue until the update. My library was not update with anything new, just the update went off to Europe came back and now I cannot enjoy my music, movies or anything in ITunes. So unlike Apple to have crap go out the door. And a such a big part of their echo system they sell. Help!

Since so many people have the same issue I can only hope someone solves this soon! WDDC is in a couple weeks lets see a fix by then...

FYI - even with the update to 11.2.2.23 today I'm still crashing.

Disabling all internet and starting up iTunes worked.

Close out of iTunes, re-enable iTunes, still broken.

Clearly some internet related issue is crashing everything.

First I tried

Advanced -> Reset cache and Reset Warning - same issue

Then I did the following, and now my iTunes is working WITH internet on:

I went into Edit->Preferences and disabled everything internet related:

General -> Auto retrieve CD Track names

Store -> Unchecked everything except Auto downloads for MUSIC APPS BOOKS (I thought I unchecked it..)

Parental -> Unchecked Show content ratings in library

Interesting note, on boot, iTunes brought up a Tutorial thing to show me features of the NEW iTunes. Never saw this when it was continually crashing before. Only once I had internet on and all those settings disabled did it start up and show me that. So far so good.

I have updated to 11.2.2 today and still have the problem - iTunes freezes a few seconds after launch and the rotating coloured ball doesn't allow you to do anything.

This is an iTunes issue as they have brought out three updates in as many weeks and I started getting this issue after updating to 11.2.0. - APPLE / ITUNES - PLEASE SORT THIS PROBLEM NOW!!!!!

My issue seems to be related to connected devices (iPhone, Ipad, iPod,s) as soon as iTunes launches and connects to the devices over WIFI iTunes freezes. If I switch all the devices off I have NO issue with iTunes and works fine.

I have done all the Suggested settings, turn of auto podcast download, turn off Genius, but still have the problem when I switch on any of my devices.

I cant find the SyncServices folder in the file paths mentioned in earlier posts...! - If someone can help me locate it I would appreciate it as this may be where my issue lies.

I wonder if there is a conflict between the device settings and iTunes and changing the settings may help..?

Apple must recognise there is a problem as they wouldn't have brought out so many updates recently, but each update has not cured the problem. -- APPLE, PLEASE SORT IT NOW..!!!

I have now resolved my issue thanks to spyder683

I am running Mavericks 10.9.3 and updated itunes to 11.2.0 and then experienced problems with itunes crashing, 11.2.2 didn't resolve the problem. I found iTunes worked fine if all my other devices (iphone, ipad, ipod) were turned off, as soon as I powered any one of them up and itunes detected them over wifi or USB itunes then froze with the dreaded colored ball spinning.

In Mavericks 10.9.3 the SyncServices folder is not visible going into the normal library/Application support folder, your instructions below took me to a different area in the system, or at least made these folders visible. Following your instructions I was able to locate and delete both SyncService & SyncServices folders and I launched iTunes again while my devices were powered up and the issue has gone. Bliss!!!

Many Thanks

Hi Culero,

The fix of deleting the SyncServices folder is for Mac systems. From your desktop / finder, click the "Go" menu at the top, then "Go to Folder ..." Paste this into the field: ~/Library/Application Support

The SyncServices folder should be in there. I had both a SyncService and a SyncServices folder. The second one should, when deleted, help with the problem you and I both had of iTunes freezing when an iOS device is plugged in.

Hope this helps

I am having crashing as well and have been for several versions of iTunes. I have win 8.1 The latest update didn't help. Deleting sync services folder didn't help. Unchecking the ratings and deleting podcasts didn't help. Still searching through forums looking for a fix and way past mildly ****** w/ Apple at this point. As one user said, getting more like MSFT everyday. Yup.

Thanks for the detailed response. I have 10.9.3 and the 11.2.2 (3) update really screwed things up.

I found the sync services folder and deleted it.

Question about that:

Only time I recall using that folder was for MS Office when the iTunes allowed it to since Outlook.

But with Mavericks that was cut off - still ticked at Apple about that.

So did this SyncService folder serve any other purpose?

I deleted it, but was needed for any other function?

Or was it just stuff left over?

Thanks
