spinning beach ball with every click

I've got a 3.5 year old Mac Mini 2.3 GHz Core i5 with 4 GB of RAM running OS X 10.9.2. A couple months ago, at no specific moment in time, my mini started to slow down, it's continued to get slower and slower to the point now where every time I click on anything, I get a spinning beach ball for as many as 10 - 20 seconds before the Mac processes what I've done. I have run permission repairs and also bought and installed CleanMyMac2, while it "cleaned" 50+ GB of junk, my Mac's behavior has not changed. Anyone got any other ideas?

Remove the anti-virus. As a general rule, the forum contributes do not like anti-virus, Mac cleaners, nor memory cleaners. We have seen way too many cases of poor performance, or other undesirable side-effects from those classes of products.

Do you use all these kernel extensions? Or are some of them left over from years ago, but no longer used. Suggest removing any of them that you do not know you absolutely need.

295 MB Swap Used

If after removing the above apps, which are consuming memory because they are always running in the background, if you are still using Swap, you might consider adding more RAM to your Mac. Crucial.com and MacSales.com are well respected Mac RAM vendors.

17% AddressBookSourceSync

You might want to Google AddressBookSourceSync, as it should not be running constantly, and I suspect it is on your system, or you just made some address book changes.

[loaded] com.bittorrent.BitTorrent.plist (2016-02-23) [Support]

If you are constantly moving data into/out of your system via bittorrent, this can affect accessing your hard disk.

Dropbox Application (/Applications/Dropbox.app)

Google Drive Application (/Applications/Google Drive.app)

These guys can also keep your disk busy as well as your network, if a lot of the files being watched get touched.

Speaking of your hard disk. Your Mac is 4 years old. It is technically possible that your hard disk is starting to experience a lot more retries than it did when it was new, and this can affect performance.

If nothing else improves your performance, you may want to make a Genius Bar appointment at your local Apple Store for a free evaluation. Ask them to check out the hard disk for excessive retries. Well maybe do that before spending money on more RAM, but after cleaning up the software you have installed.

I'm sorry. I am not responding to you, acousticmirror, however I wanted to warn everyone against following Warwick Teale's advice though it is listed at the top as helpful. One of those clicks was mine. I apologize, I accidentally clicked it. DO NOT follow those directions! I found out the command

cd ~/library/caches;rm -rfv *

erased all of the personal files and settings, removed the desktop icons, and left me with the default wallpaper. Luckily it was my 11 year old daughter's computer so no family photos were on there. I would have cried if all of my personal documents and folders were erased.

Dec 9, 2016 11:51 PM in response to KayeUUU

You should always do a complete system backup before doing any thing in the terminal. You need to use caution with that rm command. It's the delete command.

I'd never use the rm command with -rfv and certainly not *. I'd rather do this stuff in the finder. You will need to reveal the ~/Library in the Finder. If you want to do something like that do:

mac $ cd ~/Library/caches
mac $ pwd
/Users/mac/library/caches
mac $ ls -rl
total 12616
drwxr-xr-x 5 mac staff 170B Dec 20 2015 storeinappd/
drwxr-xr-x 6 mac staff 204B Jul 28 2015 storedownloadd/
drwxr-xr-x 5 mac staff 170B Jul 28 2015 storeassetd/
... clipped ...
# and then just the rm command by itself.
# while still too dangerous for me.
rm -irfv *
# will show you what it is doing
# control + c to stop
# use the up arrow key to get back then remove the i
#

You sure you typed it correctly? A space in the wrong place would be bad, bad, and bad.

That's the most likely way you could have gone wrong. I do not think that command done correctly would have delete what you observed. One the other hand, booting in safe mode would have deleted what Apple suggest as the correct solution to deleting caches.
