Faint White spots on LCD Display

Hi,

I have a few faint white spots on the LCD display of my Macbook Pro. I had similar problems with a previous Powerbook G4. The white spots are about the size of a Canadian nickel and are right in the middle of the display. Since they are in the middle of the display, they are quite annoying. I already tried cleaning the screen many, many times.

I tried to call Applecare but they wouldn't even listen what I had to say since I was outside the 90 day phone support. I was under the impression that the Macbook Pro had a warranty of 1 year; but if they won't listen to what I have to say, how can I get them to do any warranty service on my laptop?

Any suggestions or comments would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Sorry i didn't exprese myself right, i know light passes throught de apple logo, what i meant is that the white spots are in the display ALL the time: when there's light passing thought the logo and when is not.

The spots are little circles (1.5 cm. diameter) and there are not exactly at the middle, just around it.

I have noticed these too. They're like slightly lighter spots about the size of a finger print on the screen but are perfectly circular and more noticable when a certain colours, particularly gray, is displaying on that part of the screen.

Initially I thought it was dirt / a smudge mark or something wrong with my contact lenses! However, it seems to be a defect in the display. I must bring my machine back to the dealer. I don't have an AppleCare warrenty anymore, they're too expensive but it should be covered under the standard Irish & European legislation for warrenties i.e. it's a lot longer than 90 days.

Hey everyone,

I've also experienced these same "white spots" on my Mac Book Pro. I purchased it about a year ago and they started appearing on my screen in October. It looks like someone used their finger tip and applied direct pressure on my display. They almost form a perfect circle pattern in the middle.

I took my computer to an Apple store in Toronto and they couldn't diagnose what the issue was so they did the screen replacement under warranty.

Unfortunately, it began happening AGAIN a few weeks ago and I took it back to a store today to have a "genius" look at it. Immediately, they said that it was a result of putting too much pressure on my screen. I wondered how the heck I could have accomplished this since I thought I treated my MBP like a baby. I was using a Crumpler laptop bag to tote my baby around and according to them a combination of; all the gear I was carrying (which isn't much), the fact that it was a shoulder bag (resting on my hip when I walk), and the fact that I use one of those Marware keyboard covers together (which applies pressure from within) contributed to the pressure put on the center of my screen. And ultimately, they won't replace the screen because it's "my fault".

I'm just bugged by it because...

1) The genius I originally dealt with didn't know what the problem was so I couldn't take any measures to better protect my computer after it was repaired. I could have bought a tougher case, made sure I was more aware of what else I put in my laptop bag (although I never put that much in it initially), or just left it at home.
2) The genius (who was quite rude actually and treated me like I was stealing from him) I dealt with the second time said he saw this issue quite often but there is no warning anywhere saying that the Mac Book Pro can be succeptible to this. Geez, I have friends/family with Mac laptops that treat them like crap and have no issues like this. Also, I know people with PC laptops that are built like tanks (who spent a fraction of the money I did) and can put up with alot of day to day punishment.
3) I bought the Marware keyboard cover AT the Apple store. Why are they selling something that has the ability to damage their laptop screens?

So I hope people can read this and take the proper precautions when storing their Mac Book Pros during transport. Luckily, the spots aren't too bad, I just make sure my desktop wallpaper is dark so the spots won't be so obvious.

Sorry Apple, you just lost a point with me.

Hey there..

Just read your post and thought - man that's pretty crappy. If I were you, I'd call their Customer CAre number and get in touch with the Customer Relations managers. What the Genius is telling you is wrong - I've used the Timbuk2 case ( similar to your Crumpler ) and had it loaded to the tilt. I somehow doubt that it's causing the issues you mention.

Also, make sure you're firm with them but always stay nice. Get them to accept your machine back via courier and have them look at it. I've had some Geniuses, I tend to call them Apple Wizards 😉 , that often didn't know that much. I prefer to send my machines in to apple to have them looked at and fixed.

Good luck...

Cheers

I really like the Timbuk2 case I have - originally bought the 15 inch one for my older 15 PowerBook and was totally satisfied with it. It's pretty roomy ( though it could be bigger ) has a great protected ( plush material where your laptop goes ) and it just felt like it was made nice and strong.

When I upgraded to my 17 inch Macbook Pro, the selection for nice bags was pretty limited. I didn't want a backpack and some of the larger targus bags were just ho hum. I decided to get the Timbuk2 Commute XL bag and have been VERY happy with it. It's much larger, though not too big - holds everything I need and again has that great Timbuk2 feel to it. I'm not a T2 employee just have been using their bags for about 3+ years and have been COMPLETELY satisfied with them. A little pricey.. but I think it's worth it since our laptops are worth that much $$$...

If you have the 15 incher, there are a lot of good bags out there. T2, The Crumpler, Tom Binh, etc... It's all a matter if taste...

Good luck with the customer relations people - they should be able to treat you well - explain the whole situation and hopefully all will be well.

Cheers

Hi just a quick line, to say I get these faint marks on my mbp screen also. I havent dropped it or spilled anything on it so i guess its a fault with the display, will apple change the displays? Also I have loose screen, just on the left side, feels like the hinge needs tightening, however i cant find a screwdriver small enough to do it! Does anyone have the same issue?
