My devices have been hacked. What do I do?

i was using my ipad a short while ago when suddenly it locked itself, and was askiwhich I'd never previously set up. I went to check my phone and there was a message on the screen (it's still there) saying that my device(s) had been hacked by 'Oleg Pliss' and he/she/they demanded $100 USD/EUR (sent by paypal to ****) to return them to me.

I have no idea how this has happened. I am not aware of having been exposed to malware or anything else, although i did recently purchase some new apps - perhaps one of these has something to do with it? I don't know. I am not sure what avenue has been used to reach my devices - I'm about to use my husband's laptop to check through some of my accounts (gmail, etc) and see if there is any clue there.

Has this happened to anyone else? What can or should I do? Many thanks

hi Rojmer, thank you for your reply. I was pretty sure that whoever Oleg Pliss is, it's not really the name of the person who hacked my iDevices 🙂

I think that what you described is what happened - I have gone into iCloud and when i used the 'find my iphone' feature i did indeed see the message and that both the devices were locked. After a bit of research my husband suggested that i turn off 'lost mode' to see if that would restore functionality but this isnt working - each device says 'pending: stop lost mode' but are both still 'lost' despite being turned off before i tried to stop lost mode (if that makes sense).

I'm going to see about changing my icloud password now, as well...

When I click on either of my devices in "Find My Phone" then click on Lost Mode the hack message is in there.

I presume my iCloud password was compromised. Not sure though. In any case since I didn't have passcodes on either device I can't figure out how to unlock. I found a thread which suggested it could only be taken to a repair centre if you've forgotten your passcode.

once you log into icloud on the computer, you can click on 'find my iphone' and then click devices up the top. If you click on the device which has the lock symbol, you can click on lost mode to remove the message, however the hackers have put in a new passcode and therefore we still cannot access our devices. Really the problem now is, how do we get into the iphone if we dont have the passcode. Can you? Or do you erase data and restore from back-up?

We've had the same thing occur in our house tonight on my husbands iPad and iPhone. iPad has pass code so seems it hasn't been compromised but iPhone has. Same as above hackers message in iCloud and phone currently disabled. Were also in West Australia. Any ideas or just wait until the morning and hope all will be ok? Have changed iCloud password, internet banking etc

Well yes, they have done two actions via icloud- put a passcode on our device (as we didn't have one previously) and used the 'lost' feature to place a message on the front of the device. If we had a password on the account, we could have removed the 'lost' feature and opened our phone as usual with our passcode. However, because they have set it for us, we have no idea what it is and therefore cannot gain access unless we randomly guess the correct code.

Ok this is what I did, I connected my iPod to my computer it stalled in the backup (as it's my kids I cancelled it) could have stalled due to computer downloading new software update.

I asked it to restore, he denied as I didn't have the passcode. I cancelled that and asked again... this time it restored now it is restoring the iPod with the last back up.

Will let you know if I can access it when it's finished.

I have also had the same problem on my ipad and I'm also in Perth. The lock screen appeared and at the same time I received two emails from apple saying lost mode had been activated and one showing me the location of the iPad. Luckily I had a pass code set so was able to regain control immediately. All very strange, haven't been able to find anything on the net other than this thread . Seems very strange only west aust seems to be affected

The same thing has just happened to me! I'm in Melbourne, and all I did this evening was back up my phone and suddenly it was locked with the "Oleg Pliss" message.
I don't have a pass code on my phone and so I can't get past the initial screen. I can find my phone on iCloud and when I try to erase the phone the back up contact number it comes up with is the number in the "Oleg Pliss" screen message. When I tried to run the restore it said I needed to disable the "Find My Phone" feature, which I can't do as I cannot get past the first screen!

Should I erase it or not? The Optus tech support was not helpful. I think I'm going to have to go to an Apple store in the morning (Doncaster - annoying!).

Help!!!

Same things here, both Ipads got the "hacked by Oleg Pliss" message, both have passcodes. In Western Australia also. I've gone and changed all my apple id info, and deleted the credit card associated with it. I've chatted with Apple Chat and they said "this is very serious" 😕 . They've set up a phone call back from the correct department (whoever they are) tomorrow morning so we'll see what happens then.

We can access the ipads because they both had passcodes but when an app is used, it comes up with GameCentre password request ... we didn't put it in.

Feels horrible ....

My devices have been hacked. What do I do?
