Issues transferring Audiobooks using Overdrive to iPhone after update

I am wondering if anyone might have a solution to my problem. Yesterday, I updated iTunes to the latest and greatest as well as my iPhone 5s. It had been about 2 months since I had updated so I was not way out of date. I received some sort of error on my iPhone and it forced me to reinstall to factory settings and then I had to restore from the backup I took just prior to trying to update. When I had to reinstall to factory settings and restore, I lost my audiobooks that I had checked out of the library and loaded (no issues with prior audiobook transfers). I went to the library, checked the books out again and can no longer load them to my iPhone. Parts will load but not all of it.....actually, most of the parts will not load.

I have uninstalled iTunes and reinstalled.

I have uninstalled Overdrive and reinstalled.

I deleted the books from Overdrive and downloaded them from the library again before trying again to Transfer them to my iPhone.

None of this has worked and I am getting very frustrated.

Here is what I am using:

Overdrive Media Console - Version 3.3.0.0

iTunes - Version 11.2.2.3

iPhone 5s - Version iOS 7.1.1

All say they are the latest versions.

Any idea what I can do to get my audiobooks loaded?

Hi everyone!! It looks like Overdrive has a fix. I just downloaded and installed the latest version of Overdrive for Windows. It was version 3.3.1. I then checked out the wma audiobook from the library that I wanted and loaded it to my iPhone with no problem. I am now getting my other .wma book. I also had a mp3 book that I had checked out and was about to start when I learned over the new version of Overdrive. I loaded it too. I had a couple of sections of this book that did not load the first time correctly but I then synced my phone and it corrected the pieces that didn't load. I will probably listen to this book using the Overdrive app but I wanted to try to load an mp3 before I came back to post an update.

So, go to your Overdrive software on your computer and open it. You should get a message about the new version.

Thanks so much for posting this! It's working on my end. Beware Windows 8 does not allow you to upgrade automatically. You have to type in the URL to get the upgrade. I had to do it on my Windows 7 machine first, get the URL and then went to my Windows 8 machine and then type in the url. It was a pain...arrg Windows 8! But it works and I'm grateful.

I have also had trouble for years. It appears to me that Apple is covertly trying to stop us from using Overdrive.

Overdrive uses a setting in the Windows Registry that essentially sets the number of seconds the transfer wizard waits to allow the rights to be validated for each track of the audiobook.

In order to work properly the setting needs to be 90.

If you set it manually using regedit (when you look at it you will see the value at 10), the process may work for a few minutes, but during the transfer iTunes appears to enter the registry and change the value back to 10 - which doesn't work, and which causes

I for one am very angry about this - i don't like it that Apple seems to be adjusting my registry without my permission - I have never authorized them to change settings related to non-Apple software. I just bought a new iPhone this week, and the problem seems even worse with the new phone. Tonight i am feeling like returning it and getting something else.

For AegisRose - search the registry for "WMAToAppleDeviceWaitSeconds" - ITunes resets it to 10, but it works better of you set manually to 90. Please know that when you nerxt use iTunes it will reset the value to 10.

With that said, I've found a workaround that is effective - although a nit of a hassle.

When transferruing from Overdrive I change the transfer target device - I select the choice of transferring to both my device and my iTunes library.

In the case of an MP# book, I wait a few seconds after the transfer completes (to alloow the DRM validation to complete. I then select the newly book, and select "get info" and change from music to audiobook (in the options tab). Then I drag and drop the book from audiobooks to my device. The DRM validation runs for the device (you can see it file by file if you look at the audiobooks content of the device). Interestingly, the device will NOT have a copy in the Music content when this is all done.

For WMA the files will auitomatically be noted as audiobook. Again - it is worth looking at the device comtent to make sure the validation is all complete before closing anything.

The steps I've just described work with the registry WMAToAppleDeviceWaitSeconds value set at 10 on my system.

Also - this works fine on my new iPhone 6 Plus - it also works on my old iPhone 5. It is not quite as reliable on my older iPhone 4.

Hope this is useful...

Try the Find function (CTRL-F). I copied and pasted the key name from my registry. Note that any change you make will likely be undone the next time you try a transfer - iTunes does that. (If you wonder why i say that, try transferring to a non-Apple device like and old MP3 player - and you will see that the change only happens when iTunes is involved)

Also please note that I have been successful with the process i described yesterday - without changing the registry key\. I think I described my steps in sufficient detail to replicate.

Hi again~ thanks for your willingness to reply and help. I think we've hit the end of the road though~ ✖

Unfortunately, I'm unable to select the device on mine... (quote "When transferruing from Overdrive I change the transfer target device - I select the choice of transferring to both my device and my iTunes library." )

I have iTunes open, and the iPhone 5S is plugged in. The only device option that appears is the phone. 😟

In regards to the registry, no WMAToAppleDeviceWaitSeconds appears. I've tried searching for the whole string as well as just WMATo entries. Nothing. Maybe it's a version thing.

Overdrive v 3.4.0.0

iTunes 12.0.1.26

iPhone 5S - OS 8.1.1 (maybe I will try to update that?)

also relevant

Windows Media Player version: 12.0.7601.18526

WMP DRM version 2.9.0.1

Anywho- providing that info just in case you -or anyone else- sees anything significant or has other suggestions... I'm very close to just buying a cheap MP3 / WMA player and be done with this (it's just frustrating because I shouldn't have to, y'know?).
