iTunes won't install (at all) on my Windows 8.1 64 bit computer

I've tried downloading iTunes for Windows 8.1 64-bit computers and it won't install on my machine. I did everything like I think I was supposed to ... but nothing happens. In addition I've tried connnecting my iPhone 5S to a USB port ... nothing good happens. My computer recognizes the iPhone but it won't do anything with it. Also I've tried the suggestions from "windows 8.1 itunes wont recognize iphone: Apple Support Communitites" which entertains that I can open control panel ... find Device Manager and try to install new driver software from my disk ... with the suggestion that I 'browse' and find "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\Drivers. ... and "Apple" does not exist under Common Files of either "Program Files" or "Program Files (x86)"

So now what????

iPhone 5s

For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.

The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down page in case one of them applies.

Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there is backup and recovery advice elsewhere in the user tip.

If you've already tried a complete uninstall and reinstall try opening iTunes in safe mode (hold down CTRL+SHIFT) as you start iTunes, then going to Edit > Preferences > Store and turing off Show iTunes in the Cloud purchases. You may find iTunes will now start normally.

OK, this one looks like it may take more effort to resolve. 😟

Move the .msi files to root of the C: drive. Strip out any remnants of your last attempt to install iTunes and reboot. Triple-click the first line below, then press Ctrl+C,WinLogoKey+R, Ctrl+V, <Enter/Return>, then follow the prompts for the installation of that component. When complete repeat with the next line for the next component. If/when a component fails to install see if there any further clues as to the problem from the verbose log. You're looking for words like failed in the output log. With luck it might indicate a specific file or registry key that isn't being updated.

msiexec /i C:\AppleApplicationSupport.msi /l*v "C:\Log_AAS.txt"

msiexec /i C:\AppleMobileDeviceSupport64.msi /l*v "C:\Log_AMDS64.txt"

msiexec /i C:\AppleSoftwareUpdate.msi /l*v "C:\Log_ASU.txt"

msiexec /i C:\Bonjour64.msi /l*v "C:\Log_Bonjour64.txt"

msiexec /i C:\iTunes64.msi /l*v "C:\Log_iTunes64.txt"

Drop the 64s if it is a 32-bit install.

Did you produce log files?

Did you look at them?

It would seem not.

Ctrl+C is the keyboard shortcut for copy.

Ctrl+V is the keyboard shortcut for paste.

WinLogoKey+R is the keyboard shortcut that opens the Run dialog box.

If running the commands produces an error of its own I can tweak them. Depending on your settings Windows might not like putting the log files in the root of the C:\ drive in which case editing the C:\ in the log file path can be changed to %USERPROFILE%\Desktop to put the log on the desktop,

The commands would then read like this:

msiexec /i C:\AppleApplicationSupport.msi /l*v "%USERPROFILE%\Desktop\Log_AAS.txt"

msiexec /i C:\AppleMobileDeviceSupport64.msi /l*v "%USERPROFILE%\Desktop\Log_AMDS64.txt"

msiexec /i C:\AppleSoftwareUpdate.msi /l*v "%USERPROFILE%\Desktop\Log_ASU.txt"

msiexec /i C:\Bonjour64.msi /l*v "%USERPROFILE%\Desktop\Log_Bonjour64.txt"

msiexec /i C:\iTunes64.msi /l*v "%USERPROFILE%\Desktop\Log_iTunes64.txt"

The idea is to get a text file that shows the whole installation process, and hopefully within it locate the steps that the installer is unable to complete. This information may help to determine what needs to be done. Running the steps from the run dialog as indicated would generate the log files. You don't need to open a command or DOS prompt yourself, the Run dialog is being used for the same effect.

I've just noticed some changes need to be made depending on which installer is used as the source for the .msi files. I'm going to try to start this explanation over. Apologies if you think this is all too complicated and it doesn't help you directly, it may help someone else.

These steps should result in a complete set of log files on the desktop for the selected installer.

  1. Uninstall all Apple components.
  2. Extract the .msi files from your chosen setup file into the root of drive C:\.
  3. Triple click the first line from the relevant batch below.
  4. Press Ctrl+C on your keyboard to copy the selected line.
  5. Press the WindowsLogoKey (between Ctrl and Alt) + R to open the run dialog.
  6. Press Ctrl+V on your keyboard to paste the selected line.
  7. Press Enter/Return on the keyboard.
  8. Follow any on screen prompts.
  9. Repeat for the next line.
  10. You will end up with 5 or 6 text files on your desktop which are the installation logs.
  11. You should review the log for any component that failed to install correctly using Notepad orNotepad++ looking for keywords such as failed.

iTunesSetup.exe = 32-bit iTunes for Windows

msiexec /i C:\AppleApplicationSupport.msi /l*v "%USERPROFILE%\Desktop\Log_AAS.txt"

msiexec /i C:\AppleMobileDeviceSupport.msi /l*v "%USERPROFILE%\Desktop\Log_AMDS.txt"

msiexec /i C:\AppleSoftwareUpdate.msi /l*v "%USERPROFILE%\Desktop\Log_ASU.txt"

msiexec /i C:\Bonjour.msi /l*v "%USERPROFILE%\Desktop\Log_Bonjour.txt"

msiexec /i C:\iTunes.msi /l*v "%USERPROFILE%\Desktop\Log_iTunes.txt"

itunes6464setup.exe = 64-bit iTunes for Windows

msiexec /i C:\AppleApplicationSupport.msi /l*v "%USERPROFILE%\Desktop\Log_AAS.txt"

msiexec /i C:\AppleApplicationSupport64.msi /l*v "%USERPROFILE%\Desktop\Log_AAS64.txt"

msiexec /i C:\AppleMobileDeviceSupport6464.msi /l*v "%USERPROFILE%\Desktop\Log_AMDS6464.txt"

msiexec /i C:\AppleSoftwareUpdate.msi /l*v "%USERPROFILE%\Desktop\Log_ASU.txt"

msiexec /i C:\Bonjour64.msi /l*v "%USERPROFILE%\Desktop\Log_Bonjour64.txt"

msiexec /i C:\iTunes6464.msi /l*v "%USERPROFILE%\Desktop\Log_iTunes6464.txt"

itunes64setup.exe = 64-bit iTunes for Windows (for older video cards)

msiexec /i C:\AppleApplicationSupport.msi /l*v "%USERPROFILE%\Desktop\Log_AAS.txt"

msiexec /i C:\AppleMobileDeviceSupport64.msi /l*v "%USERPROFILE%\Desktop\Log_AMDS64.txt"

msiexec /i C:\AppleSoftwareUpdate.msi /l*v "%USERPROFILE%\Desktop\Log_ASU.txt"

msiexec /i C:\Bonjour64.msi /l*v "%USERPROFILE%\Desktop\Log_Bonjour64.txt"

msiexec /i C:\iTunes64.msi /l*v "%USERPROFILE%\Desktop\Log_iTunes64.txt"

At this point it is worth noting that iTunes64Setup.exe and itunes6464setup.exe include different versions of Apple Mobile Device Support. This may be why some users whose installations have failed on installing AMDS from the full 64 bit version have been able to install the "for older video cards" version.

I've only had a brief look so far but looking for the word error shows up a number of things, error 1723 in particular caught my eye. Searching around briefly I've found three suggestions that may possibly help.

Repair installer service

  1. Press WinLogoKey+R to open a Run dialog
  2. Type in msiexec /unreg and then press ENTER
  3. Press WinLogoKey+R again
  4. Type in msiexec /regserver and then press ENTER

Grant full access to temporary folder

Locate your temporary folder, for example on Windows 7 this would be C:\Users\<Username>\AppData\Local\Temp

Right click on it, open properties, open security tab, add your user with full rights and set full rights to "ALL" if it is in the list.

Click apply and OK

Enable Administrator Account

1. Open Command Prompt from your current account. To do this,Click on start go to Accessories then right click on Command Prompt and click. "Run as Administrator" This will open the command prompt. Accept the UAC prompt by clinking on "Yes".

Now, enter the following.

net user administrator /active:yes

Hit enter. You will get a note as "The command completed successfully."

2. Close the command prompt and sign out from your account. You will see that an Administrator account appears at the sign-in screen.

Just click on it so you can login, give the password if you had set any passwords for Administrator account during installation.

3. Now install your desired program which was giving error. it will be installed without giving error 1723.

If you want to disable the Administrator account for security reasons, simply type the following command and it will again hide the Administrator account from your PC.

net user administrator /active:no

It is advisable to disable the Administrator account if you are not using it. and don not leave the Administrator password blank, which will open the gates of security threats.

Under the Grant full access to temporary folder I would suggest making sure that SYSTEM, Administrators and your own user account each have Full Access permissions from the Properties > Security tab. I would then hit Advanced, then Change Permissions, then tick the box Replace all child object permissions with inheritable permissions from this object then click OK and approve the changes.

It may also be worth clearing out any files in the temp folder which will allow themselves to be deleted. A few are likely to be actively in use, but the rest should not be needed.

What antivirus software are you running? It may help to temporarily disable it while trying to install iTunes?

What is the current setting of User Access Control? Lowering this setting may help.

This may help some.I just tried installing iTunes on a new computer(windows 8.1) while running Firefox as my browser. It would not save the install file.Switched my browser back to IE and it downloaded without a hitch. I have now returned my browser to Firefox and will be interested to see if I have any future problems with downloads and/or updates.

iTunes won't install (at all) on my Windows 8.1 64 bit computer
