Bluetooth and Mac Pro problem

Hi all,

Long time lurker, first time poster...anyhow, I just recently received my Mac Pro and I'm having some issues with my mice. First, my wireless bluetooth mighty mouse (purchased earlier) has unbelievably poor range now. My Mac Pro is about 2.5 to 3 feet from my desktop and I literally have to move the mouse all the way to the left-side edge of the desk (closer to the tower) to prevent the mouse from acting erratically. I'm not a lefty, so this makes it all the worse. When I bring the mouse close to the tower, apparently all is well.

Second problem is with my included, wired Mighty Mouse which is just acting oddly. The cursor dances all over the place. I have tried resetting the machine, reinstalling drivers...all to no avail. The thing just keeps moving with a mind of its own. Anyone else having similar problems with either Bluetooth range or wired mouse issues?

Thanks 🙂

I'm having the same issues with my mac pro. Sticky keyboard on occasion and incredibly skippy/unsmooth tracking.

I read through this thoroughly and was prepared to do the switch but I was wondering:

1) Is this in any way affecting the airport antenna? (i know people say it works, but is it not hooked up the way it should be?)
2) What is the other cable for? (someone mentioned a service diagram somewhere, where can we find this?)

I guess I'm pretty much just asking - are the wires really just switched up or is this for some reason creating a stronger antenna system in some way? (why does the airport need two connections? is it actually just giving your airport one strong and one weak antenna and bt one strong antenna?)

I called apple support and after about 2 hours of holding between people, I was told just to take it into a store =\ I repeatedly mentioned this topic but they explained that they have to follow procedure 😟

Adding mine to the pile, I too implemented the wiring
change to correct poor MM tracking at even a foot
from the Mac Pro. I do not have the Airport option
installed... The wire markings and status were:
1-long/unmarked/not connected; 2-short/marked/not
connected; 3-short/marked with both 3 & 1 stuck
together/not connected; BT-long/marked/connected to
Bluetooth. Removed BT from Bluetooth module, replaced
with #1..... Bluetooth works correctly now.

I found the wire markers to be wholly inappropriate
for the application. It's no wonder a problem exists,
since they can easily fall off, and probably do in
the build process. Evidence of this is the varied
number assignments described in this thread. But it
seems that when the build is complete, the wire
marked BT is attached to the Bluetooth module, when
present. I just wish Apple would reissue the wire
harness BOM and document the fix.

THANK YOU FOR THIS POST!

My Mac pro had been working fine with my BT MM and KB, until today.. all of a sudden it started moving on its own... and was really jittery.

I did what you said (I have no airport and my wiring was the same as yours) and now it works PERFECTLY.

THANK YOU!~

As a side note, my #1,#2, and #3 were all connected together by what appeared to be a piece of gaffers tape underneath the 1st hard drive bay. #1 was the only wire long enough to reach the BT module (aside from the one marked "BT"). "BT" was not connected to the other 3 wires, and instead seemed to come from under the logic board.

Also had the bluetooth problem, the solution mentionned above is a 100% working... In fact the tech at apple center told me he had never seen the BT cable. He always sets the BT module w/ cable 1...
I changed the cables and now it's working very very nice... I thought the MM was very weak in terms of tracking but also surface response now it's a completely different mouse... Just had to be careful with the pins 😉

Thx for the help i found here...

I found a lead page at Macrumors to a pictoral description how to connect them...interestingly my Macpro has the same issues but Airport is NONEXISTENT!!!

I added the D-link usb device and it works well but will not wake the computer when asleep like the Apple version does?????

Anyone else find this an issue??

I'll add my vote to the proposed solution. My Mac Pro (recv'd in Nov/Dec 2006) exhibited the problems descibed here. I had contacted Apple support who suggested swapping Wireless Mighty Mouse between systems (I have 3 of them), the problem stayed with the Mac Pro. I tried a Bluetooth dongle which fixed the problem (as descibed elsewhere). I checked the antenna wiring and switched to the "1, 2, 3" configuration. The Bluetooth dongle has been removed and everything works great. Simple to fix, I used a pair of tweezers to move and re-seat the antenna connectors. Some caution is required, but should be do-able by anyone willing to open the box.

Tried above solution too - and at least Bluetooth is now working fine.

I found 4 cables, three of which (labeled 1, 2 and 3) are grouped together with a tape and come from the left (front of the Mac), the fourth one is labeled BT and disappears behind the PCB at the top.
Cable 1 and 3 are middle length, 2 is short and BT longest.

Old (BT not working well configuration) -> new one (I did not change cable labels):

not connected and protected with plastic tube: 2 -> BT
upper AirPort: 1 -> 2
lower AirPort: 3 -> 3
Bluetooth module: BT -> 1

Now I am just not too sure the AirPort is correctly connected to the two antennas. Does anyone know how to tell the cables apart (without the labels, as it seems they may be wrong), and where they go (and what the correct labels are)?

Hello,

Thanks for all the info here by all collaborators. I am glad this forum exists as I have had the same problem and didn't know what to do about it as Apple didn't seem to be aware of this in all my conversations with them. Given the similar symptoms and positive results by others with the rewiring of the anteneas, I am going to assume that will work for me too. I can confirm that the dongle BT works but I share the view that this is a bandaid until the issue is resolved.

However I am very surprised that the Apple Care consultant told me that the BT and Airport Extreme were non user servicable parts and even non-retrofittable. Meaning I had to buy the dongle and seperate wifi card from them (at greater expense too). After several mailing issues, I finally discovered that the Extreme card I had was not compatible with the MAC Pro. Going to the Apple shop itself I find out that THESE ARE USER SERVICABLE AND WILL NOT AFFECT THE WARRANTEE IF FITTED BY NON-APPLES - they exchanged the Extreme card but not the dongle explaining that the Apple on-line store is a seperate corp. So they were doing me a favour although it didn't feel like it.

So now I am where many seem to have crossed before to rewiring 1, 2, 3.

I am a recent convert to MAC and think the MAC is an excellent machine and other than the above I have been impressed with the service/professionalism.

Thanks

Well today i did a bit of searching.
I have 4 wires 1-2-3 and no lable.
The one without the lable drops down behind the MB and seems to conect to the tin plate just above the pci-x slots.
The 3 other cables run down the face plate with a bunch of other cables.
I also found a small pcb stuck to the top om my case just above the cd caddy.
It has 2 wires fitted to it but am unablt to find out what it is it has no paste on it just a sticky pad.
Any help please as i just orderd bt an wireless from store and have about a week to find out what goes where ?.

thanks madinc

I have the same problem with the mighty mouse. Keyboard however works fine.
I opened it up and the wires are all connected properly...

I did not see the BT wire tho. But the longest one was on the BT module, both shorter one on the WIFI card.

If I set the mouse right on top of the MacPro then there are no problem, if it's on the desk, it lags.
