Apple Event: May 7th at 7 am PT

Looks like no one’s replied in a while. To start the conversation again, simply ask a new question.

Whither "Preview"

I have not kept up with the details in all Updates, and do not understand, (yet) the changes to the "Preview " item. It identifies itself as "Preview 5.5.3, and says it is "owned by NASA - Earth Observatory".

On my screen it has produced, without asking, odd items from the recent past, and one claim it makes is to be able to reproduce files without reference to the original software.

Is there somewhere I can read a description of the functions of "Preview" and how it can be useful (to me).

If you can also explain why Apple needs an Earth Observatory function, I would be grateful.

First you need to take a screen shot.

Open a new Finder Window in Column View.

Select your Macintosh HD in the side bar.

Click on Users then your User folder so it shows your folders.

(This is a bit more than what my screen shots shows but will give us more info.)

After you take the screen shot, select reply in the forum message.

Click on the camera icon and navigate to the screen shot you took.

Click on insert image.

You should see your image in your reply.

There you go !! Not sure if I could do it again. Just the same as typing, but faster. Don't understand why this should be of any use, unless of course, it helps to access probable glitches in the system.

I think I have learned a great deal from our exchange, I have removed many useless items relating to very old Macs and software. I checked and this Mac is on latest 10.7.5, the HD is healthy, and the Permissions fixed (and granted ?).... You have shown me , if disaster threatens, that I can download a brand new Lion - (with clean paws)

I read somewhere that I can even increase memory, but I still have 100GB on the HD. So let me thank you sincerely for your prompt and very helpful guidance.

I don't see how I can confirm once again, that you have solved my problem, but I think you ought to go to level 5 toute suite.

Best wishes and many thanks,

Eric

Hi Eric, this was not what I wanted to see. I needed to see your Macintosh HD selected with the folders under the drive.

Your Macintosh HD is not even showing up in the list. Under Finder Preferences, select to show your hard disk.

Next click on your drive (usually named Macintosh HD) do you see other folders than this?

If yes, try posting a screen shot showing the folders for your drive. There should be no other folders here other than the ones I listed. In older versions of OS X you could have folders here but no longer. I would like to rule out really old ones for OS 9. Therse are just taking up space and no longer work.
