what is mevio? Suddenly need to log into mevio to get podcasts. ???

Subscribed to multiple old time radio podcasts for years. Suddenly, iTunes is telling me I have to sign in to something called "mevio" in order to access my podcasts.

What is this? What do I do?

Thanks,

George

It means that the feed hosted at mevio has been removed - I know that some of the Old Time Radio ones were moved (to libsyn) recently, so that may be it. If you resubscribe via itunes or by grabbing the xml feed from the website, it may work. As a stopgap, if you unsubscribe from the podcast, it will at least stop the constant popups.

I'd help more clearly but unfortunately I'm having the same problem right now but I have absolutely no idea which podcast is making the request, and as far as I can tell there's no way to find out. Good old itunes.

Had the same pop up asking for a password early this morning. I tried various things like removing all videos which did not work. Then after reading the first post about Old Time Radio I deleted their podcast altogether. That seems to have eliminated the pop up and iTunes crashing.

Synced my iPod classic this afternoon with no problems.

Not sure if this eliminated the problem but it is working now.

Mevio seems to be a sketchy company if that is what it really is.

Looks like mevio went out of the audio only podcast business. The olde time radio podcasts posted a podcast announcing their move to a Libsyn last month. Mevio still could be spoofed now or they gave up the domain and some one is taking advantage of it.

I discovered you can see the host website from the right click menu and selecting show description.

Here's a personal update:

I took my MacBook Pro to the school where I teach today. I worked with iTunes, but offline (because I don't have any WiFi access at my school). I made a couple playlists of some sound files I need to give a final exam in a language class. Synced with my iPhone, no issues.

Just now, having brought my laptop home, I started it up and logged in to my main user account. iTunes launched automatically. I noticed while I was checking email in a web browser that the iTunes dock icon was bouncing. Sure enough, when I went to iTunes, there was the unwelcome Mevio login box.

I clicked cancel this time, and it canceled out the box just fine. No spinning ball of death, no iTunes crash.

And about the same time I was doing this, I noticed iTunes automatically downloading updates for three podcasts to which I subscribe.

I don't think I am actively subscribed to any Mevio (formerly Podshow) podcasts right now, but I'll delete and resubscribe to a few to make sure.

Incidentally, Mevio is what Adam Curry's Podshow company turned into, back in 2008. Curry himself left the company, taking his own trailblazing podcast "The Daily Source Code" with it, in 2011. That was apparently the beginning of the end for the company. In 2012, Mevio moved from San Francisco to Los Angeles and re-named itself again, this time calling itself Bitesize Entertainment.

I don't know why a site called Mevio is asking us for passwords, but obviously we shouldn't enter any.

I'm going to start the delete-resubscribe process now.

I think curteskridge was posting that link just about the same time I was typing. That article by David Jackson is one informative insight into the history of the company.

I was around in the "second wave" of podcasting, starting in March 2005. Adam Curry's podcast was the nerve center of private podcasting, and the advent of the Podshow Network was a big deal. But that was then, and this is now. Podshow/Mevio/Bitesize seems to have shriveled into something quite different now.

I'm pretty confident this is not some sort of phishing scam if that's what's being implied. The reason being that I purposely enter an invalid username and password into the box and it recognizes it as invalid and asks me to re-enter it. If I cancel it, it just goes away for about an hour and then pops up again. Either way, I do not like the fact that the dialog box states the credentials will be sent in the clear. So I'll keep clicking cancel for now until a solution is provided. Oh, and it doesn't crash iTunes for me either.

I experienced the same problem with Mevio.com yesterday. I also subscribe to several old time radio podcasts so I unsubscribed from them. When that didn’t work, I just deleted all the episodes, whether I had already listened to them or not. I also wrote to iTunes Support.

When I signed on to iTunes this morning, I didn’t encounter any dialog boxes from Mevio.com asking for my name and password. Oddly enough, the podcasts I thought I had deleted are still there. I was also apparently able to successfully download a couple of new episodes from some of my other podcasts.

I also received a reply from iTunes Support. Basically, they recommended that I uninstall, then reinstall iTunes. (They also, for some reason, seemed to think I am using some form of Windows as my OS.) Here, for what it’s worth, is what they said:

“I am sorry to hear that you're experiencing issues with podcasts on your iTunes Store due to a third party website asking you to sign in continuously. Nothing to worry, Tom; I'm here to help you.

I recommend that you attempt to resolve this issue by uninstalling iTunes and then reinstall the latest version. To do this, first ensure that you are logged in to an Administrator user account on your computer, then follow the instructions in the appropriate article:

“Removing and reinstalling iTunes, QuickTime, and other software components for Windows Vista or Windows 7

<a href="http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1923" target="_blank">http://support.apple.com/kb/<WBR>HT1923</a>

“Removing and reinstalling iTunes, QuickTime, and other software components for Windows XP

<a href="http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1925" target="_blank">http://support.apple.com/kb/<WBR>HT1925</a>

After successfully uninstalling iTunes, please ensure you have upgraded to the latest Service Pack for Windows by installing all updates available to you on Microsoft Windows Update:

<a href="http://update.microsoft.com" target="_blank">http://update.microsoft.com</a>

Once you have the latest Service Pack for Windows installed, download and install iTunes for Windows:

<a href="http://www.apple.com/itunes/download" target="_blank">http://www.apple.com/itunes/<WBR>download</a>

After successfully installing iTunes, navigate back to Podcasts. Everything should be working well.”

Don't waste your time - they should not have advised you to do that. Mevio has shut down - it you go to just http://mevio.com you will hit a password request. It's nothing to do with iTunes, and it's not malware - it's just that the server has no content and only authorised persons can access it, so any attempt by iTunes to access a feed which used to be stored on it will hit that password demand.

Any podcast feeds which were hosted on Mevio are dead in the water - you won't be able to subscribe to them and their Store page won't update, unless the author has taken steps to provide an alternative feed and insert the redirection tag in the old one in the brief period between the warning and the removal of all content.

I am still getting the pop-up, but I no longer get the spinning-ball crash when I hit "Cancel." When I do that, the pop-up goes away until iTunes tries to update podcasts the next time.

I went through my whole podcast list last night. To my knowledge I don't have any in iTunes that were ever associated with Mevio. I may have subscribed to some Podshow/Mevio podcasts years ago, but they're not in my account now.

I am also skeptical of the advice to re-install iTunes, but on the other hand, I don't really have much of an explanation as to why this started happening yesterday all of a sudden. All those Mevio podcasts didn't change their feeds yesterday. As I pointed out up the thread, there hasn't even been a company called Mevio for over a year, and they certainly haven't just gone out of the audio podcast business recently. They ditched audio pocasts quite awhile back.

what is mevio? Suddenly need to log into mevio to get podcasts. ???
