what is mevio? Suddenly need to log into mevio to get podcasts. ???

Subscribed to multiple old time radio podcasts for years. Suddenly, iTunes is telling me I have to sign in to something called "mevio" in order to access my podcasts.

What is this? What do I do?

Thanks,

George

It means that the feed hosted at mevio has been removed - I know that some of the Old Time Radio ones were moved (to libsyn) recently, so that may be it. If you resubscribe via itunes or by grabbing the xml feed from the website, it may work. As a stopgap, if you unsubscribe from the podcast, it will at least stop the constant popups.

I'd help more clearly but unfortunately I'm having the same problem right now but I have absolutely no idea which podcast is making the request, and as far as I can tell there's no way to find out. Good old itunes.

i love this thread! hahah its such a funny problem, who would have thought appreciators of old time radio would then be curse with what seems like a virus! hahaha anyway, i too have the curse. I am currently attempting to rid myself of the pop up😕. unsubscribing via itunes isnt the only thing you need to do. what you REALLY need is to go to the magnifying glass in the top right corner of the desktop and search your mac for "podcasts" a folder will pop up. click on the folder. your finder window will pop up and it will show you all of the folders of different shows inside the podcast folder. highlight all of them (click on one once, then press command A) AND DRAG THOSE LITTLE F-ERS TO THE TRASH!!!!!!! then empty your trash! I dont know if you have any real attachment to the old podcasts but i recommend just deleting it all. I had many of those windows pop up and freeze my tunes. NOW! if you havent already, unsubscribe to the shows on itunes and resubscribe. I think that should do it! happy problem solving gum shoes!

I can only post the solution I have used again. This takes perhaps 5 minutes in inexperienced hands and fixes the problem forever. You do not need to delete anything.

Essentially, it redirects any connections your computer tries to make to www.mevio.com to somewhere else; this causes itunes' attempt to update the podcast to silently fail, rather than bringing up the prompt. No need to hunt for the offending podcast, delete anything, or change the update settings. At various points it may prompt you to enter your password.

  • Close itunes
  • Open Finder, and select Go > Go to Folder
  • Type /private/etc/hosts into the dialogue box and hit Go
  • Copy the hosts file to the desktop
  • Rename the original copy (in the etc folder) as hosts-original or something like that - as a backup in case you make a mistake
  • Open the copy of hosts on the desktop with Textedit; it will look something like this:

##

# Host Database

#

# localhost is used to configure the loopback interface

# when the system is booting. Do not change this entry.

##

127.0.0.1 localhost

255.255.255.255 broadcasthost

::1 localhostfe80::1%lo0 localhost

You want to add a line after the line which reads "255.255.255.255 broadcasthost", redirecting any requests to www.mevio.com to another IP (I used 0.0.0.0). After editing, the file will look something like this:

##

# Host Database

#

# localhost is used to configure the loopback interface

# when the system is booting. Do not change this entry.

##

127.0.0.1 localhost

255.255.255.255 broadcasthost

0.0.0.0 www.mevio.com

::1 localhostfe80::1%lo0 localhost

Move the edited version back into the 'etc' folder (it will prompt for your password)

Voila! I hope this was sufficiently clear.

I had this same issue before & I fixed it. Just recently it happened again because I subscribed to the same 2 podcasts that were giving me this error previously, every time I tried to update my podcasts in iTunes. Each time I did updates to my podcasts, I'd get a pop-up box that asked me to log into mevio.com, asking me for a username & password. It wouldn't list what podcast(s) were requiring this, & I had no log in info for any of my podcasts.

Last time I checked into this, I discovered that there were 2 podcasts I had subscribed to (there may be other podcasts from mevio.com that I didn't subscribe to that may also give you this error). The 2 podcasts I had previously & just recently subscribed to are:

1) The Art of Code 2) The Art of Photography

If you have one or both of these 2 podcasts, you need to:

a) Unsubscribe (before deleting)...right click, then left click 'Unsubscribe Podcast'.

b) Delete podcast (after unsubscribing)...right click, & left click 'Delete', then left click 'Delete' in confirmation pop-up.

Once I did this, both last time, as well as a couple days ago, I never had the mevio.com error message again. Feel free to send this message to anyone else who is troubled by this error.

Thanks! spiller.will's trick worked like a charm. I did it three days ago and this sporadic nuisance has finally stopped. Anyone else who's having this issue, give this a shot. I have much Windows experience as I have little Mac experience and yet this took all of two minutes. It's just pasting/adding two lines of very simple text. I do urge, as did the original poster, that you make a backup copy of the file just in case.

Now, if only something could be done about the way iTunes can't seem to do two things at the same time without giving me a minute of beachballing. Having just plunked a tidy sum in RAM it ain't that. Nevertheless, this mevio thing was simply excruciating on top of that other issue, so thanks again!.
