what is mevio? Suddenly need to log into mevio to get podcasts. ???

Subscribed to multiple old time radio podcasts for years. Suddenly, iTunes is telling me I have to sign in to something called "mevio" in order to access my podcasts.

What is this? What do I do?

Thanks,

George

It means that the feed hosted at mevio has been removed - I know that some of the Old Time Radio ones were moved (to libsyn) recently, so that may be it. If you resubscribe via itunes or by grabbing the xml feed from the website, it may work. As a stopgap, if you unsubscribe from the podcast, it will at least stop the constant popups.

I'd help more clearly but unfortunately I'm having the same problem right now but I have absolutely no idea which podcast is making the request, and as far as I can tell there's no way to find out. Good old itunes.

For simplicity, now I'm home, I'll paste it here too:

I'll post what worked for me, which is a very elegant solution (not my own). Essentially, it redirects any connections your computer tries to make to www.mevio.com to somewhere else; this causes itunes' attempt to update the podcast to silently fail, rather than bringing up the prompt. No need to hunt for the offending podcast, delete anything, or change the update settings. At various points it may prompt you to enter your password.

  • Open Finder, and select Go > Go to Folder
  • Type /private/etc/hosts into the dialogue box and hit Go
  • Copy the hosts file to the desktop
  • Rename the original copy (in the etc folder) as hosts-original or something like that - as a backup in case you make a mistake
  • Open the copy of hosts on the desktop with Textedit; it will look something like this:

##

# Host Database

#

# localhost is used to configure the loopback interface

# when the system is booting. Do not change this entry.

##

127.0.0.1 localhost

255.255.255.255 broadcasthost

::1 localhostfe80::1%lo0 localhost

You want to add a line after the line which reads "255.255.255.255 broadcasthost", redirecting any requests to www.mevio.com to another IP (I used 0.0.0.0). After editing, the file will look something like this:

##

# Host Database

#

# localhost is used to configure the loopback interface

# when the system is booting. Do not change this entry.

##

127.0.0.1 localhost

255.255.255.255 broadcasthost

0.0.0.0 www.mevio.com

::1 localhostfe80::1%lo0 localhost

Move the edited version back into the 'etc' folder (it will prompt for your password)

Voila! I hope this was sufficiently clear.

I had the same problem happen in the last month or so. I couldn't even get into iTunes without somehow logging in to this mevio.com. Yes, as others reported I googled the website and a password was required there as well. I was able to actually start iTunes by force quitting and then restarting by holding the SHIFT key. I then went to the list of podcasts and unsubscribed and deleted all the podcasts that had exclamation points next to them so iTunes wouldn't keep trying to download them. Most of mine were international podcasts, French and British podcasts. I had a problem restarting iTunes immediately but I was finally able to restart it without a problem.

I had this problem as well. I couldn't fix it because when I would open iTunes and select "Podcasts" (to try and eliminate the podcasts), iTunes would freeze. I finally got it to stop freezing when I turned off my WiFi internet access on my computer, and started iTunes without it. Then I went to "Podcasts" and deleted all of them. I had tried all the fancy start keys and deleting and reloading iTunes, but it wasn't until I shut off the internet that I could get the "Mevio" server to let iTunes alone. Now the "Mevio" pop-up does not come up no more. 🙂

I also didn't want to remove the podcasts, as I have not listened to them all yet!

Modifying the hosts file to look like this, worked:

## # Host Database # # localhost is used to configure the loopback interface # when the system is booting. Do not change this entry. ## 127.0.0.1 localhost 255.255.255.255 broadcasthost 0.0.0.0 www.mevio.com ::1 localhost fe80::1%lo0 localhost

HI I had the same problem .

FIX WITH

1 search programs - use word MEVIO.

2 YOU WILL GET A LIST OF FILES THAT ARE ASSOCIATED WITH MEVIO BUT NOT NAMED MEVIO.

3 delete all files

4 repeat until your machine says that MEVIO is not recognised and is not on the computer.

I found that most of the RELEVENT files on my machine were OLD TIME RADIO - /HORROR /SIFI/ DETECTIVE ETC.

HOPE THIS HELPS.

"Mevio Inc. was founded in San Francisco, California in October 2004 by Adam Curry and Ron Bloom, as a digital media network, with the aim of helping people publish and market their podcasts, and to help listeners find podcasts that suit their interests.

...

In April 2014, Mevio ceased operation and closed down their service, giving content creators and broadcasters just 10 days to migrate their feeds and content to an alternative platform before losing it permanently. The websites are no longer operational and contain no statement from the company."

@spiller.will's solution worked for me: In iTunes 12, select 'My Podcasts' and then select 'Episode List' view, you can 'Edit / Select All' podcasts, then right click and use the copy URL function, and paste a list of every URL into a text document in one step. You can then find podcast feeds that include mevio.com in their URLs. Then go back and delete the subscription to these podcasts.

In my case, the offending podcast was Best Of Youtube, http://www.mevio.com/feeds/bestofyoutube.xml

Further to Roger's suggestion.

You can do this for ALL the podcasts listed in iTunes in one fell swoop instead of one by one.

I was able to "select all" podcasts, copy url by right clicking on any of the hilited podcasts, paste into a text editor (TextEdit).

This resulted in a column of urls in TextEdit. Using search for "mevio" I was able to determine which podcasts were using that url and then unsubscribe to them. If a podcasts is coming from an aggregator that mirrors a podcast this may not work. It sure worked very well for me though when mevio was in the url.

Note - Unsubscribing to a podcast isn't enough. I found you also have to turn OFF "auto download episodes".

Thanks again Roger!!

Best of luck everyone!
