Mapping Service?

Hi All

1 G data normally last me an entire month. Since Last week something is using up all my data and normally under Cellular you can see a breakdown of what uses your data. Right at the bottom there is a link called System Services and if I click on that I can see Mapping Service is using up all my data? I have turned off everyting possible that I think can have any impact to this but its still using my data. I have even turned off location services (which was not turned off before and previous months I did not have any problems) but its still using up my data?

Please help???

HEy there again, I found out that its indeed Vodacom's fault I called 111 yesterday and complained for 30 mins.. This is what theu sent me this morning:

Dear customer, After a thorough investigation, it was confirmed that the data in question was indeed used and the billed amounts are true and correct. U still have 4.04GiG remaining.Notwithstanding the above, you are a valuable customer of ours, and therefore without admission of liability and purely as a ONCE-OFF GOODWILL GESTURE, Vodacom Service Provider is prepared to credit 1.5GiG data bundle. Going Forward - Please note, you will need to monitor all data activity on your device. Alternatively, please install Mydata manager App from the Itunes Store to help assist in monitoring the data activity on your Device.

Kind regards, Vodacom Customer Care Safiek Andrews

SO they sent me R275 of airtime along with that, saw this morning it chowed another 300mb. This is Vodacom's problem indeed, to think I actually blamed Apple for this?! Its like Vodacom was the Devil tempting me to distrust in my iPhone maker.

So this is what is getting to me, I have the same issue and they also offered free data as "a gesture of goodwill". If this is a vodacom problem then I can't see this being a gesture of goodwill but just trying to keep people quiet by giving them data, then making it THEIR issue to monitor their usage but they CLEARLY know there is an issue and are not willing to just fix it or address it!

I think there are too many people just laying down and letting the SP walk all over them. WE are not using the data, there is something wrong with THEIR network so THEY need to fix it, it's really simple. We as consumers are surely protected by the CPA that it's due to an error on the suppliers side. I have read examples of AT&T giving away data to cover their network issues.

I could not agree more with you!! I replied this to

Vodacom:

Vodacom did respond to my complaint regarding the depletion of my data due to the 'mapping service' by partially compensating me.. HOWEVER, the message I received informing me of the compensation was rather arrogant and disrespectful. Does Vodacom really think they are doing me a favor by compensating me for my loss after it was THEIR error?! What arrogance! Yet the problem prevails.. I will post a copy of that sms on every single social network I'm affiliated with, and will make known to the public how unprofessional and arrogant Vodacom is. And Whoever Saffiek Andrews is, he better start learning how to apologize to customers professionally instead of referring to compensation as a "ONCE-OFF GOODWILL GESTURE", tell me, how is it a goodwill gesture when I'm being compensated for more loss than Vodacom has compensated me for? What about my time and energy to resolve this issue? What about the two whole days I was left without data? I had to spend even more money to drive to places just so that I can get online, was that taken into account, was that compensated for?? I could have accepted a complimentary extra 5 gigs on top of the compensation as a goowill gesture, sure! Easy for Vodacom to compensate me my loss of data, but to call it a GOODWILL GESTURE, sounds like something from a Communist Company that thinks they're doing people favors by compensating them for their loss and then have the arrogance of calling it a favor. I will diligently keep record of this and make known to the public everywhere I can about the attitude of this company. You may find the discussion on Apple's own website regarding this matter. And you can be sure to find it later next week on HelloPeter, Hellkom, and I'll be writing to several Newspapers and other social sites about this, unless I get a written apology and a true goodwill gesture to make up for my time and money loss due to a technical error caused by Vodacom.

On 11 June I noticed that all my data that I had left for the
entire month was depleted and it also then used up all my call time. I called
the call centre and after being transferred to many people and answering your 5
point security check with each and every one of them, they could not assist me…

I advised them about the above and as I monitored the data, I
noticed under settings, cellular, use cellular data for, system services, there
was a Mapping Account where all the data where allocated too. They told me this
was a result that I had some app running in the back ground and they suggested
to me that it was the Maps application (which came with my phone and which I
hardly use). I am also very religious with closing my apps when I open it and
on that specific day I did not go into anything other than my email. I was told
that a technician will contact me as they could not assist further. They also
told me that my phone settings was wrong and advised me to turn of certain
items etc etc but could not find the problem (Ie. I turned off Background app
refresh, Location Services, Maps, Weather apps etc etc.) I need to mention at
this stage that I have had the phone for about 6 months now and it worked
perfectly fine with the settings it was on prior this problem. While waiting
for the technician to contact me the data kept on being taken off and I even
compared my phone settings to 2 other people who I know with the same phone
(IPhone 5S on IOS7.1.2) and could not find anything out of place). An IT
technician phoned me from Vodacom advising me that they have received similar
complaints from other customers and he thinks it’s an apple problem as similar
complaints has been lodged and that I need to take it up further with apple. He
however “felt bad” about my situation and compensated me with R200… At the time
he phoned the mapping service did not deduct any data in the last 24 hours and
I thought the problem was resolved. Approximately 3 days after this another 300
mb was deducted so the extra R200 did not last long and I had to top up again
(I topped up data & airtime about 4-5 times this month where normal months
I only top up once at the most.) My IT division at my company suggested that I
reset my phone to factory settings which I did…. Twice… and still this past
weekend mapping services took data again…

I then joined an Apple support forum and it seems I am not the
only one with this problem and Apple is not to blame as they are saying it’s
the service provider. Everyone commenting on this forum to my question is also
Vodacom customers? This is leaving me furious as I have had to endure an entire
month without data, painful telephone calls, stuck in places without a phone to
use and dealing with a call centre that could not give me answers as to why my
data is being taken unfairly from me?

Please can someone urgently look into this and provide me with
some answers. Today is the 1st of a new month and I have a full 1G
data which I am not sure how long it will last as I am expecting the mapping
services issue to take a chunk out of my data again???

I had background app refresh and my location services of in privacy settings this whole time, have not used any maps or location tagging apps, and again mapping services have used data. Also installed the ios update 7.1.2 before it started using data again.

I Am not so sure it's the service providers fault. If vodacom is wrongly charging the data in the back end how will the iphone even know its happening?

Jul 10, 2014 11:47 PM in response to Trudielee

My ipad 2 has consumed 1GB of data overnight withouth me using it at all. When I looked under the cellular connection settings I found that all of it was spent on mapping services. I have no idea what that means and there's no option of turning it off. I'm on a 2.5 gb data plan, so almost half of it was spent on nothing, and this is ridiculous. Imagine I was in a foreign country and was using 3G roaming what the price would have been.

update: My iphone 5 did the same thing last night. So in total Ive lost 2gb on nothing. Im on MTN Cyprus. Already contacted them and wait for an answer
