out of software memory

I have a iMac late 2009 with 12GB ram, 3.06GHz Intel Core 2 duo, 322GB free space and OS X 10.9.3.

My problem is that I often have to reboot my machine because the machine "is out of software memory".

Need help to fix this.

Anybody?

I would like to point to the following (not the cause of your issue):

you still have Java (SystemPreferences->Java), which is not in use in Mavericks, so you can take it out; open Java in the SystemPreferences, disable it (if it is not disabled already), click "Show All" on top of the SystemPreferences, and the CTL+click on the Java Applet and choose "Remove...". That is all. For perfection you can also remove the 2 com.oracle.... plists in the Macintosh->Library->LaunchDaemons folder, and the 1 com.oracle.... plist in the Macintosh->Library->LaunchAgents. No further deletes.

Lex

ps: update Mavericks to 10.9.4
