I Have an ipad 2 and selected "download" but seemed to not respond, I did a restart (hold down lock and home button until screen turns off) then tried it again, a licence agreement menu appeared and as soon as I selected agree it began at 6:13pm). It estimated an hour at the beginning but then went up and down in estimations of time taken to download from 5 hours to 40 mins but once the blue line progressed about 2/3 it was saying about 30 mins and counted down in pretty much real time until it successfully updated (7:14pm). I recommend not using any apps or anything whilst the update is progressing and make sure you have min 50% battery or if low then have it charging during the update.

Hi,

I've read through all the replies/instructions under this message but I did not see a situation that I am encountering right now. I have an iphone 4 with IOS 7. When I tried to update to the 7.1.2 this morning, it turned into recovery mode after about 1+ hour of updating. When I pressed the home buttom + power button together, it asked me to connect with itune. When I connected the phone with itune, it has this messasge "Itunes has detected an iphone in recovery
mode. You must restore this iphone before it can be used with itunes.
" And it still did not work after I tried to restore through itune.

Exactly the same experience on 2 iPhone 4S's and 1 iPad 2. The first iPhone was in this state for over 4 hours. Got all 3 devices working by simultaneously holding the home and power buttons for 10 seconds forcing a reboot. IOS version now shows 7.1.2 And no updates available. The big questions are 1) did this update install correctly, and 2) why does this seem to be happening To a lot of people?

Just one more to confirm issue, iPad 2, progress bar was stuck at 2/3. Forced power-cycle and seems to be okay.

And I found this discussion after about 15 seconds with a Google search - the level of ignorance on display in this thread is...well, not surprising, but still disappointing. Yes, it ***** when stuff fails, and doubly so when you lose data. Yes there is obviously a bug (or two or three) that slipped through, and somewhere there is a software engineer (or 5) either pulling their hair out trying to find the problem, or chagrined and ticked off when they find it. Software development (and testing and support) is an incredibly complex field - to all the people ranting and raving, I have a feeling you couldn't even get Xcode to compile and run a "hello world", let alone push out an OS patch to millions of devices...

So, let me get this straight... you blame failed updates on users? Seriously? Also, is there a reason I'm not aware of to insult strangers on this discussion forum whether they can or cannot compile "hello world" on Xcode? And how that relates to updating a patch issued by Apple?

This so-called "fix" by rebooting the phone didn't fix anything for me; mine went straight into recovery mode. Also, this thread was not easy to find when I was doing the update, because it was a relatively new problem. And, yes, it is a problem, whether you or Apple admits to it or not.

When stuff fails, and I lose all my recent photos and videos for about a week, it's disheartening. Is it my fault? Sure. I'm the one who didn't back up just prior to doing an update.

No one says software development is a walk in the park. But, the complexity of the software doesn't excuse such failed deployment. If this was M$ doing the same crap on an Office update, people would be livid at M$. Can you imagine if a simple Office update would end in people reformatting all their computers? That's inexcusable, and Apple should be held to at least the same standards as M$, wouldn't you think?

Just my 2 cents.

Two button restart seems to have worked for me. Phone says it's up to date, but how can I be sure the full update worked if the progress bar didn't complete? To be fair, this is the first update I've ever had a problem with on my iPhone 4, but it was still a bit scary ;-)

I had to hold the on/off button and home button down for quite a while before the phone shut down. Then the Apple and progress bar came back. The progress bar started for a few seconds, then stopped and the phone booted up as normal.
